That reminds me that I’ve always wanted to read Kirby’s 2001 series as well.

I’ve read the first two issues of Kirby’s Eternals ... and I’m so glad I saw the movie before I read these. I don’t think I would have liked the movie near as much if I had had Kirby’s version to compare it to.

I read the first few issues of Machine Man and then dropped it until Ditko took it over. I like the Ditko issues. I’ve been meaning to give the Kirby issues another chance some day.

I’ve read the first three issues of Kirby’s Eternals and I’m really mad at myself that I didn’t read this series in the 1970s.

I’ve read the first three issues of Kirby’s Eternals and I’m really mad at myself that I didn’t read this series in the 1970s. It was an amazing time to go into Circle-K and 7-11 stores finding the newest issue of Eternals, Devil Dinosaur, 2001 and Machine Man. Walking out with fresh Kirby fun in one hand and a Slurpee or Slush Puppy in the other hand to drink in help of a brain freeze as my exploding mind beheld whatever Kirby was crafting. Extremely great time to be a teen comic book reader!

Extremely great time to be a teen comic book reader! I read Kirby’s 1970s Cap. And I read The Black Panther. I had the first few issues of Machine Man and Devil Dinosaur. (I got the complete Devil Dinosaur a few years ago and I’m going to read that again when I’m done with the Eternals.) I don’t know why I didn’t read The Eternals. Maybe I didn’t like the first issue and I didn’t want to try to fit it into my budget. So I ignored it.

I looked at Mike’s Amazing World to see what was on the stands the same time as The Eternals #3.
I bought these comics that month:
Amazing Spider-Man #160
The Avengers #151
Batman #279 (the first time I bought a new issue of Batman)
The Brave and the Bold #129
Captain America #201 (this sold out at the drug store. I got it a few months later at a used-bookstore)
Daredevil #137
Fantastic Four #174
Flash #242 (Actually my brother had this, but I remember it well)
Hulk #203
Invaders #8
Iron Man #90
The Joker #9
Jungle Action #23
Marvel Super-Heroes #59
Marvel Team-Up #49
Marvel Treasury Special featuring Captain America’s Bicentennial Battles #1
Marvel Two-In-One # 19
Nova #1
The Secret Society Super-Villains #3
Thor #251
It was a great time to be making those weekly treks to the newsstand.

I read The Eternals #19 this morning, thus finishing Kirby’s original run. It’s so good! He was just barely getting started!
It’s surprising that some of the characters associated with the series aren’t part of it every issue. We see Ikaris and Sersi and Makarri almost every issue, but Thena and Kro pretty much disappear for the last five or six issues!
And Sprite is only in one issue for a few panels!
I’m sad it’s over. And at this point, I’m not interested in reading any Eternals stories not by Kirby.

I am on issue #11 right now myself. People who say Kirby could not write dialog are people who haven't read Kirby. The story he is doing really is an epic myth! 20 years later this would have been a great indie. Kirby ahead of his time, as always.

I think most people who've read the original agree that as the series progressed Kirby was likely under increasing pressure to make it more acceptable to the average Marvel fan, and that the last 6 issues or so are increasingly compromised in that direction - e.g. Ikaris becoming the main character, the Hulk appearance, etc. I think there are still lots of important nuggets mixed in with all that but it takes some work to pick out the stuffthat still reflects the original concept buried as it is amongst a lot of extraneous material that I don't think would have been there but for that pressure.
And the repercussions are still being felt now: fans and most subsequent writers to this day still think, wrongly IMO, that Ikaris was the star of the show. And Thena's central role still goes unrecognised.
