I know someone who could certainly use that new IDW volume for Christmas.

I really enjoyed the big B&W phonebooks published by Dark Horse and would prefer to stick to whatever will most resemble that format in the future.

The final Dark Horse omnibus will be available in both hardcover and softcover this May. Beyond that, I know Stan was in talks with IDW about releasing an IDW omnibus series a few months back, but I don't know what (if anything) was ultimately decided. Presumably, we would have to wait for the release of two more IDW standard tpbs before we'd even hear anything about such a series. Regardless, I have passed up on the IDW floppies and will pass on the trades too with the hope that such a series is coming. The Saga editions are one of my favorite things in my collection and my absolute favorite way to read Usagi.

So many options! It's a pretty great time to be a fan!
I've been collecting the Saga hardcovers, so will finish up my collection with #9 in a few months. I've also collected all the softcover trades and will continue to do so. I did get the Bunraku hardcover, but probably won't continue with the IDW trade hardcovers. If the IDW trades get collected into a larger HC omnibus, then I'll pick up those when they come out. Same goes for the color reprints: I'll get the softcover trades and then if they do larger HC collections in the future, will pick those up as well.

There will have to be a deluxe, hardcover collection of the IDW series published in black & white, to stand alongside the Saga books, right?

I can understand preferring the Saga style collections (I only recently extended my collection to include those after I actually got to hold and read one myself). However, I've been buying the floppies (a term I hadn't heard for comics before since I've not been collecting much except for Usagi for a couple or three decades). My view is that buying them now (and collected editions as they come out) because 1) I can't wait months (maybe many months) to read the collected editions; and 2) I want to support Stan (at whichever publisher). I'm privileged enough to be able to afford to buy them now and later which may not be the case for others. We each have our own views on what to buy when. I'm not criticizing, just sharing my approach.

Ten years ago, Usagi sales numbers were scary, so I felt the need to support Stan and Usagi each month as well. Now, Usagi is experiencing this amazing resurgence that our support helped happen. I feel okay taking a break. I sure do miss getting a new Usagi story ten times a year, though.

I had gotten on Usagi at the very start but then LIFE happens and drifted away. Limited funds with prioritizing spending caused me to stop. Then CCF came along and the Usagi Forum posts reminded me what I had been missing out on. Very quickly began buying up all the Saga collections and then new single issues as they come out. Making up for lost years. The great part is now I can show others what they are missing out on by using the monthly's as free advertising for putting Stan's bunny into new reader hands.

There truly are many choices for reading and collecting Usagi Yojimbo.
Our choices range from floppies, to trade paperbacks, hardcovers, Saga editions, and digital.
Floppies are nice, but with over 30 years of floppies to chase down, that isn't very practical if you want to get into reading UY from the beginning. The Hardcovers are always nice, but are also always limited in their print runs, which makes them more difficult to find further down the road, unless one has deep pockets/purses.
Even the tradepaperbacks or softcovers are becoming harder to find, and the fact we have several publishers to deal with doesn't make it any easier, as each publisher has their own way of doing things. Dark Horse for one, seems to let books go out of print, although there is now talk of reprints coming soon. It would be nice if the smaller TPBs (volumes 1 thru 34) would be kept evergreen (? - is that the right term?), so that new readers would always have a reliable source to collect all the stories in the same format. The only other easy alternative is to go digital, which can save you money and space.
I didn't begin reading UY until the Mirage run, and I didn't actively hunt down the early floppies until some years later. Books were still relatively easy to come by back then. I have been able to acquire every floppy except Albedo 2, which has always been out of my comfort zone spending wise (I continue to kick myself for not buying it when a local comic shop had copies for $20 in the early 90's). From the floppies I eventually collected the Fantagraphics and DH TPB volumes, and then moved on to the HCs. The TPB were still easy to get back then, but by the time I started the HCs, some books were getting tough to find, but I was still able to do it without breaking the bank. From that point on (beginning around book 25), I have made sure to pre-order all the HCs as they come out, including the Saga books.
The important thing to remember is collect what YOU enjoy, and what YOU are comfortable with, not what others are doing, and not because it's the latest trend (unless you're into all that).

You raise an interesting point, maichan. With trades constantly going out of print and becoming ludicrously expensive overnight, floppies may actually be the most practical and affordable route. And yes, of course pursue the format that brings you the most personal joy
