I think Old Faithfuls have more to do with creators than with titles or characters. During my peak Marvel reading years, late 60s through most of the 70s, I found myself drawn to certain writers and artists that I could usually depend on to deliver the goods I liked: Gerber, Englehart, McGregor, Moench, ... whereas if the creative team was changed on a favourite book, there was no guarantee I'd continue to enjoy it.

In terms of going to the same well multiple times (re-reading books), I think you're definitely onto something here. There are certain creators that I can always count on for great storytelling and sequential art. While there has to be at least a minimal attraction to main characters, it's the creators that either bring them to life or kill any interest.

Yeah ... and I'm not claiming that I don't have my own favourite characters that I'll always feel curious about no matter who's writing or drawing them, but looking at it objectively, there are only a few runs or appearances that I really like for any of them - and as the years go by, those become an ever-diminishing minority of an ever-growing total.

Truth in checking out new series of favorite classic characters. I read Terrifics for Metamorpho and Platic Man. I will follow Flash as he is my fave hero & I still pick up occasional Batman's to check out what he is up to. Hawkman guarantees a buy from me. LOSH I always will start to see if interests me enough to continue.
Marvel just doesn't have that same draw for me anymore as so much of what they do isn't really the characters I remember. I will get the odd TPB if it looks interesting. I drift towards Marvel Mini-series anymore if at all. More characters for the cost.
In ye olden days it was all about the writers or artists mostly. Wein, Wolfman, Conway, Englehart, Starlin, Perez, Byrne and such would get my $$. Religously I got Avengers & FF & LOSH as those were MY teams I grew up with so would keep following.

You actually felt like you were reading a story with contextual life or death consequences for the characters back then. These days, I'm not so sure

^Really need to read Invaders in full at some point
And you really can't go wrong with Howard The Duck, but I will admit that it's bizarre sense of humor isn't for everybody

I'd forgotten there were a few issues without Gerber at the helm.
