MARVEL SNAPSHOTS: FANTASTIC FOUR #1
I liked this a lot! This comic book recognizes Glenville, New York, a community on Long Island where the Human Torch and the Invisible Girl used to live. Maybe it's an obscure little bit of early Marvel Age trivia now, but Glenville is where Johnny Storm's series in Strange Tales was set. Sure, it was not such a great series (except for the Kirby/Ayers art), but I've read them all, and I always had a soft spot for the series, even as I usually liked it more for the potential than I did for what was actually on the page. As silly and as badly planned as it was, there's almost always some little bit of fun in just about every issue, especially in those early issues where Johnny thinks he has a secret identity (a very bizarre little interlude that, I'm pleased to say, is mentioned in this Fantastic Four issue of Marvel Snapshots.
Briefly, this story is about the high school reunion at the school where Johnny and girlfriend Dorrie Evans graduated some years earlier. A news team has been sent to cover the event because Johnny is expected to show up. Dorrie agrees to an interview and to show them around Glenville and they find out that the Torch's relationship with the town is … complicated.
Fun book! I'm glad I decided to take a chance on it when I made the choice to get a few digital comics this week.
