What am I supposed to do to not be an "idiot" in this scenario short of making a purchase at each and every table? The more I read online about how so many of these artists are judging and resenting me for stopping at their tables and not buying, the less sure I am that I ever want to walk through Artists Alley again.
Talking to people is good. I like the interaction. It's those people who obviously think my stuff is funny who laugh at one of my cards, call a friend over to my table - the friend laughs at it too. They look through my other cards. Share the jokes. "Oh look at this one!" Sometimes they actually take photos of the vibrophoner with their phones as I'm sitting right in front of them - then they walk off to buy some mass produced piece of tat with Deadpool's face on it. Those idiots. Those moments. That's what I was talking about.
No, not everyone does that but there are enough of them for it to be depressing. It's VIBROPHONING rude. The people who are obviously not into, impressed or like my stuff? Fine I can deal with that. I don't like or feel obliged to buy everything for sale on every creator's table. There is some really amateur stuff out there that is just too painful to read. I can dig that some people aren't into what I'm selling, but would find badly-lettered, misspelled, black and white comics about serial killer werewolf scuba divers just up their alley. But when the (potential) customer so obviously DOES get it. Likes your stuff. Enjoys it. And THEN vibrophones off...
Just buy one card.
Mind you, this is all pretty academic as I don't think any of us will be going any cons for the rest of the year, do you?

Otherwise you deserve to be judged and resented? If I show enthusiasm for an artist's work, but don't buy a card, I'm the bad guy? I try to show interest in EVERYONE's work, and here I thought that was me being nice.

I'm obviously not explaining myself very well. Yes interest is great. Appreciated. Wonderful. Validating. I've had some really involving conversations with people at cons who didn't buy a thing. Enjoyed their company. Learned stuff. Had artists and writers recommended. Interaction. Good. Two way. No problem.
It's the tossers who go through all the things I have for sale. Obviously think what I do is funny. Take enjoyment from my work. Often calling people over to share their amusement.. and then just walk away that I have a problem with. That's just taking. Treating me (and the other people who they do it to) like some sort of free sideshow. There for their amusement but not even aware that they should even think of giving back. Like I said in my previous I have had people take photos of my cards on the stall with no intention of buying. That's stealing. It's happened many times a day at every con I've been at. I don't know, maybe it's just a UK phenomenon but it's annoying as all VIBROPHONE! THAT's what I'm talking about. Not friendly interaction with like-minded friendly individuals.

They don’t even talk to you? That’s rude. It's also an awkward situation. It takes a level of comfort and/or courage to talk to the artist behind the table. I do it, but I always feel a level of shyness that I do not show. Sometimes i discuss their work to the person with me, assuming they can hear the praise I'm offering. When you get into a conversation, it can feel like a trap sometimes. How do I get out of this conversation without buying something? I just think its pretty upsetting to judge folks that harshly who are enjoying your work. The ones photographing it - yeah, give those folks Hell. I get that part.

That's the worst. My stuff is mostly gags. I don't really do stuff that you linger over and admire come back to and find deeper meanings. It's instant. One hit and it's done so it's inevitable that this is going happen.
'Giving them hell' is not really an option. Lovely idea (and one day I'll do a strip in which some hapless creator does just that - though I'm not sure I can bring myself to draw the level of violent bloodshed that I'll end up writing). But I can't see it happening in real life because I too am a pretty shy person and find interacting with strangers a struggle at times, even hiding behind a table full of art. 'Making a scene' or being deliberately rude (even in response to their rudeness) would upset me more and ruin my day. (That's why I was so pleased to find that moment in the letter from Mr Wood in the first place. It happens to better people than me!)
Often this 'using my stuff then walking away' happens when I'm talking to someone else. On and off I've worked markets, owned shops (and made a full time living at it for periods) for great chunks of my adult life. As a customer, when you're talking to a trader you probably haven't got their full attention. You'll have 90+% of it but that there's always a part of anyone who's ever worked a market stall that is is keeping a careful eye on the other potential customers who may need serving, or who may be in the process of thieving from you, or just about to knock over some carefully constructed display. It's a juggling game. Like driving. It's second nature. And just as other people's irritatingly bad driving habits can cause you to fume and rail and curse - to no possible effect on them these twats do the same to me. 'Con Rage'. I think I've just come up with the title for that strip.

Hey junkmonkey, this is a fascinating conversation, but can I ask you to please watch your language. I noticed the odd f-bomb being dropped in your posts and some other "adult" terms creeping in which are unsuitable for an all-ages, family friendly forum like the CCF. If you could go back through your last handful of posts and either asterisk out some of the letters in the offending words or replace them with milder words, I'd really appreciate it. Many thanks.
