Daphne Bryne #1 Written by Laura Marks Art by Kelly Jones Summary: When her father dies Daphne's life takes a turn for the worst, but she quickly finds bullies aren't all that's bad. Plot/Art: I'm not going to lie, I got this book 100% based on Kelly Jones' name on the cover, when it comes to horror infused comics there are few better than him so there's no way I'd miss this. Truth be told, though I would have enjoyed this book no matter what the plot may have been Laura Marks has started an interesting yarn here. A precocious young female protagonist coming of age in a Victorian world with a hint of the supernatural make for good bones but the quiet moments with Daphne and the believable dialogue between her two bullies was solid and sold me on the book completely making it not just an art book like some of Jones' previous ventures but a great read in its own right. Grade:10/10

TMNT #101Written and Illustrated by Sophie Campbell Summary: In the wake of Splinter's death Clan Hamoto is fractured by their grief, but the mutagen issue still rages on. Plot/Art: If you thought the book was going to wander a little with out the usual creative team Campbell put that worry to rest real quick as she delivered a silent look at the Turtles cradling their dead father and his subsequent funeral...al in the first couple pages. It was a powerful start that really made you feel like this wasn't just some filler story but an incredibly important chapter in the evolution of the Turtles. The issue is basically broken into two parts, similar to the reaction issue when the Turtles were first exiled to North Hampton in the classic run by Eastmen and Laird Donny narrates how his brothers are coping with the new status quo through a journal entry that focus on how each of his brothers are dealing with their grief: Mikie has adopted a kitten and focuses all his energy on nurturing and protecting it to the exclusion of everything else, Leo has abdicated his role as leader and retreated to an old green house where he's started a new garden where he spends all his time while Raph has abandoned his family to become a vigilante in Mutant town, leaving Donnie alone and unable or unwilling to bring his family together. While interesting enough as a character study, the real meat is the second part which features newly minted(and female) ninja turtle Jennica in her quest to find a place for herself in Mutant Town. While the former part is a play on the past, which is a part of the IDW series that I've loved, the second half is completely new ground featuring an element that hasn't been seen in past iterations. Old Hob, a mutant cat and on again, off again ally/villain, released an air born mutagen turning a portion of Manhattan's population into mutant animals which has now been walled off and dubbed Mutant Town. Sure, the idea of a walled city isn't new but seeing it mutant eye view from someone affected by it is and the humanistic look at that crisis is exciting. Grade:10/10

Gotham city monsters wasn't taken off my list...and ug this issue was just as bad as the last. It's disappointing, the concept was so strong to start but it's just gone no where.

Immortal Hulk #29Written by Al Ewing Art by Joe Bennet Summary: Roxxon's plan against the Hulk continues. Plot: While there were a few great scenes concerning the Hulk's transition to staying active in the sunlight, and the conversation between Betty and Doc Samson was great the rest of the book was a whole lot of treading water. Art: As always Bennett's art was fantastic, but although I loved the designs for the monsters I wish their designs would have had larger connections to their namesakes. Grade:7/10

Batman 86 Writer James Tynion IV Art Tony S. Daniel
Since Tom King's run has finally come to an end, I wanted to check out where they're going to go with the series. Naturally, there's lots of set up here for a new arc and not all that much action, but it was a good read overall, and I like where it seems to be going. Batman's trying out some new toys and cleverly dealing with some old enemies while Catwoman's entangled in her own mystery, and the ending gives us some serious looking craziness to look forward to next month. Nothing remarkable here necessarily, but very solid, and it appears the series is in competant hands.
8/10

I'm not a huge fan of Tynion, but anything has to be better than King.

Dr Strange #1. Written by Mark Waid. Art by Kev Walker. I know this came out 1-2 weeks ago but I just got to my LCS for the first time in 3 weeks. I had passed on Waid's last Dr Strange series because the concept of Strange in space just didn't interest me. But the idea that Strange has been healed? Neat concept! So with this issue Dr Strange is still the Sorcerer Supreme but is also a neurosurgeon again. It adds a nice twist to his ongoing story. It worked with this issue. Hopefully Waid can keep this idea fresh and novel with each issue going forward. Kev Walker's art was decent. Hopefully he will get to get even weirder in future issues showcasing magic. 8/10.

Hawkman #20. Script by Robert Venditti. Art by Fernando Pasarin. The Evil Hawkman: Sky Tyrant is trying to secure his eternal rebirth. However Hawkwoman is trying to stop him. She has the help of the Atom and Adam Strange. However stopping Sky Tyrant may result in the death of Carter Hall. This time without him being reborn! Venditti is taking a different approach to his second year on this title. I love his use of Hawkwoman, Atom and Adam Strange. I also love how Carter's soul keeps trying to stop Sky Tyrant from controlling his physical body and so far failing. 8/10.

Grade:10/10 Read this one partly based on your review and partly because of the setting. And partly because Kelly Jones is awesome at horror (not a genre I'm a huge fan of). Good start. Worth keeping going.

Immortal Hulk #29. Written by Al Ewing. Art by Joe Bennett. Giant monsters have been released by the Roxxon Corporation. Earth's heroes are away on other missions. So the Hulk steps up to stop them. I agree with thwhtguardian on his assessment of this issue. It was decent but felt like all setup for a new arc. 6/10.

I really need to catch up on Hawkman, I stopped reading after the Shadowguy showed up as I wasn't looking for a regular superhero book but it sounds like I missed out.

Worth keeping going. I could look at Jones' exploded spines all day long, he's a master at that kind of gross out horror. What I loved here was his more subtle work, I don't think I've seen him do normal people in a long time so it was great to see that side of his work too.

I agree the Shadow Thief/Shade arc was just OK. But as a result of his time in the Shadowlands Carter's soul becomes overpowered by one of his past "evil" lives: the Sky Tyrant who is the Hawkman of Earth-3. This story arc started in #18.

Yeah, I jumped off then, and hate to say it, but while Olliffe's art was ok, it was just ok.
Gotta catch up cause this sounds really good again.
