It's that time of year, what can I get for _______ this time? My Dad is especially difficult to buy for, I ran out of Three Stooges videos he would like long ago. One thought I've had is he loves to pore over maps... I've looked around for the last couple years at Atlases but not finding something that would be what I think he'd like. He likes place name detail, and large... would a road atlas be the thing I should look for? Maybe a slightly out of date one would be better than the little Auto guide books with the hotel listings or the maps in a similar Best Western publication. I think he would like the entire world too which makes it hard to get for around $30. My Mom is also difficult, I've usually gone with stores I know she will visit gift cards, but this year I got some lightswitch faceplates with very nice art of owls. Two for around the kitchen back door and one for her bedroom. Plus a gift card as well. If someone likes an animal or bird or make of car or whatever and haven't already been inundated with 'stuff' that shows it you're all set! I'm now difficult though as I have so much bear stuff it's beyond where each thing can really be treasured (though some are). I hope someone remembers my love for these hard Ouzo candies from Greece again this year, they forgot one year... it's something I never seem to buy for myself but love them when they are around. How is the search going for you? Have you ever gotten a comic book from a non-comic book fan? Way back I got those Star Trek collections from Golden Press from a dear neighbour, and I've given Archie digests in the pocket of a pair of jeans a couple of times. My BF has given me great music related pressies, and I gave him the two slip-cased hardcover Don Martin volumes one year! We joked it needed wheels to be carted onto the ferry.

It's been sitting around collecting dust for about 10 years - the only reason I have it is because my next door neighbors gave it to me (they would have thrown it in the trash (!) otherwise); I'd be happy to send it over, although the damn thing's so big and heavy I have no idea how I'd pack it or how much postage would cost...

He can read Nederlandse, but I don't think something that old would be his thing, something that's mostly up to date, say 1990s onward and not particularly valuable in case something accident-wise transpired is what I have in mind. Thanks for the offer though, very generous. Yes, the postage would be almost scary I bet!

Or for old comedy, there is a spectacular blu-ray collection of Buster Keaton's short films. I hope someone remembers my love for these hard Ouzo candies from Greece again this year, they forgot one year... it's something I never seem to buy for myself but love them when they are around. I had no idea those existed, but now I want to try them. I'm sure they must be possible to find in Chicago. My first real superhero comic as a kid was an issue of Action Comics my sister got me for my birthday. I had no idea that Don Martin collection existed. Tempting, but I bought the complete Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes collections when they came out, and that's enough for a good workout. Wonder how big a complete Mad's Sergio Aragones would have to be? Might generate its own gravitational field.

I get the feeling my Dad just liked the Stooges with the original Curly, and then not the super early ones; we had a couple with some Bud Abbot type leader bossing them around on one DVD and they didn't work so well. I think I'm the only Buster Keaton fan in the family. I did get everyone to watch that one Laurel & Hardy silent where they are door-to-door Christmas tree salesmen and they loved it. My Dad has watched and enjoyed some of the silent Our Gangs I have, but generally there is a real stigma against the silents... and when I was little one next door neighbour had theater organist in the silent era (and printer of handbills for the same theater) in his history. We could hear him playing his home organ at night sometimes and it was pretty neat. He passed away when I was eight or nine and his wife stayed a friend of my Moms for a long time after that (she was originally from Cornwall, I could have asked her if she knew any old pixie/piskie stories had I been smarter). On Black Friday I redeemed some 'reward points' to get one $50 gift card for the points that usually only got you a $25, and for a $25 with 2/3rds the points it would normally need. So those are the last of my Christmas shopping done. I had a nice surprise though, I ordered some comics the day before and got a nice email from the seller saying he had been just about to launch a 70% off Black Friday sale and refunded me a large chunk!

I have found as my parent's have gotten older they don't want or need "things"... But they love experiences. A play. A dinner out. Movie passes.

One year I got tickets for my parents to attend a show by a hypnotist that used to advertise on tv... "the man they call Raveen!" I have to admit I kind of hoped they'd come out non-smokers but that didn't happen. My father and grandfather got a gift to go see an NHL hockey game together which would've had Wayne Gretsky on the visiting team, and it included a hotel and bus and ferry. Unfortunately this was the year the players went on strike or were locked out by owners (sorry, I forget which after all this time) and it never happened, plus it took forever to get refunded on all of it. But it is a good idea to give an experience of some sort!

For anyone who likes to tinker with things...
I bought a lockpicking kit a few weeks ago, and it is awesome! Coupled with a few judiciously chosen Youtube video, it turns anyone into a regular Scott Lang!
It’s honestly a lot of fun, especially since it really works. Picking a lock with two bobby pins like they do in the movies is not fiction, I guarantee it!

I mean, which Canadian station was it on? As I say, I don't remember it being shown on our channels (CBC and CTV) in Nfld back in the 70s or early 80s.
