So I read 'Dark Knight, Dark City' today (it came out it a trade I picked up)... I think I liked it more than Shax did... I don't know. Your reactions sound similar to mine. A whole lot of great, but the Gotham as a supernatural entity bit was better suited to LotDK (which it was probably intended for; I still think this was filler after Wolfman's temporary but abrupt departure).

Perhaps... looking again, your grades were more positive than the write up... I know how that can be. Sometimes it's a good story but there's just those couple things that really make you cringe/scream/roll your eyes (or all of the above). I definitely think this was one of those type of stories. There's also a few Dectective issues in the trade, which I'll read in a bit... I assume they're the ones that happened at the same time, so I'll see if I agree with you on those

So the other issues in the trade were later... you haven't got to them yet (629-633)... guess I'll wait until you get to them.

I'll try to keep them in my brain... very odd choice for putting together as a trade, if you ask me.

Ah, so the connection is that they're all Milligan stories. I guess Dark Knight, Dark City wasn't big enough to warrant its own trade.

Yeah, 3 issues isn't much of a trade... Marvel did do some with 4 a while back, but they're pretty cheesy, more of a square bound comic (in fact, they're about the same as a 100-pager). Not that I minded getting it (I've been thinking I wanted to check out the story since you reviewed it), but it does boggle my mind what DC decided to put out.

Interesting quote from Doug Moench regarding "Prey" that I stumbled upon tonight: "In truth, my ideal version of Batman was in the "Prey" storyline in Legends of the Dark Knight (republished recently in a trade paperback). He is someone who is obsessed right to the point of going to the brink, but never going over the edge." He goes on to explain that the version of Batman he arrived at in "Prey" was the basis and foundation for what he did when he returned to the Batman title a little while later, especially with "Knightfall".

That certainly seems to be true of his work on Knightfall.

I haven't read this thread in awhile, but I was curious about the general consensus of the Post-Crisis era of Batman circa 1986-1992 (Pre-Knightfall). I've read DKR's, Year One, A Lonely Place of Dying and A Death In The Family but haven't yet read the whole era. Best overall era for Batman?

'I can't think of anything else I've seen in O'Neil's (now) four year tenure that would count as a "social issue".'
Steroids/drug enhancement - Venom storyline & eventually tied into Bane's story line - it was an issue then, but kind of prescient considering how sports have gone in the past 25 years.
I think you could say the graphic novel 'Night Cries' was a way to do a mature themed Batman story at a price point to avoid the issues he might have had with Killing Joke. It's not near as graphic but the plot is very dark dealing with child abuse.
Alan Grant had a side character named Legs that was a homeless war veteran he used in a few issues.
Those are a few that came immediate to mind, there are probably some more if you look closer.

It's way, way later after O'Neil's reign as editor but I always thought Joe Casey and Cully Hamner's 2 part mini-series Tenses was a very unique Batman tale that is centered around class. It is kind of a rare 'social issue' Batman story.

I've read DKR's, Year One, A Lonely Place of Dying and A Death In The Family but haven't yet read the whole era. Best overall era for Batman? Not sure what the general consensus is, but I'd rate Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle's run as one of the best out of any era - I'd start with Detective 583 and just work my way up from there. Scarface and the Ventriloquist, Ratcatcher, the Corrosive Man, Cornelius Stirk, all make their debuts in short order and they follow that up fairly quickly with the classic four-parter "The Mud Pack" running from Detective 604-607.
I loved Jim Starlin's run when I was younger but now feel that it's driven a little too much by adolescent angst. That being said, I do think his Ten Nights of the Beast (running from Batman 417-420) and Batman: The Cult hold up well.
Peter Milligan has a brief run on the character (starting with the three part Dark Night/Dark City running from Batman 452-454 and shortly thereafter with Detective 629-633) and serves as a high point for the era - especially 'Identity Crisis' in Detective 633 and "And the Executioner Wore Stiletto Heels" in Detective 630. He did later contribute a four-part storyline crossing back and forth through Batman and Detective entitled 'The Idiot Root' but that just wasn't for me.
Some of the best stuff of the era not already mentioned would also include Max Allan Collin's Batman 402 and 403, Doug Moench's 'Prey' running from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight 11-15, and Gotham By Gaslight (the first Elseworlds).
I'd also recommend that you check out the great work Shaxper's been doing within this thread, though whether that means reading every single page or skimming through it and checking off items of interest is of course up to you.
