What's the story on Warren Ellis's Doktor Sleepless - is Ellis finally getting back to it? I read the TPB back when it came out around 10 years ago and a few days ago I saw there are issues listed in some of the previews for new comics. Not sure if these are reprints or what. I also didn't realise there were a few more issues back then than the 8 that were collected in the TPB, so either way, I've missed some stuff. Wikipedia in their summary box says there were 13 issues but then lists 16 issues in the body of the same article, which is also confusing. I'd be interested to know the future of Injection as well.

For those fans of the classic Shazam/Capt Marvel... Jerry Ordway's excellent Power of Shazam series from 1995 is being collected. A HC comes out in July collecting the OGN and issues #1-12.

Ellis' story in a Death Metal special by DC has been dropped and replaced after recent allegations of sexual wrongdoing by Ellis (to which Ellis has issues a statement owning up to his actions) emerged in the past few days dating back to the 90s, and Ellis has shuttered his weekly newsletter in its wake, so the future of any forthcoming Warren Ellis projects may be in doubt moving forward. I am not going to go into the details o the allegations, but the story hit just about every comic news-site and Ellis' response letter has been published at most of them as well. -M

Barnes & Noble has been a major player in getting comics in graphic novels and trades to the mass market. The man largely responsible for that market and it's growth over the last 20 years is James Killen, their graphic novel buyer who has worked with all the publishers over the years and balanced retail realities with publisher aspirations to grow the market into what it was. He was furloughed/laid off by B&N effective August 1, meaning publishers who are struggling to reach the market in the COVID landscape have lost one of their biggest allies. B&N is struggling, and the GN market has shrunk in recent years, but having Killen there as an ally has meant they have still been able to get a significant number of books to market and be on the shelves for customers to discover. That is no longer the case, so we will have to see what happens to that market in the coming year. The impact probably won't really be seen until we see Brian Hibbs end of year Bookscan report for 2021, but I'm thinking the effects are not going to be good for the bottom line of any of the publishers who benefit form the current status quo at B&N. There's more details plus some industry reactions in the article about this over at Comics Beat. -M

Barnes and Noble could be on its last legs anyway... the COVID thing could be the last straw.

Marvel has grabbed the rights to both the Alien and Predator franchises. Some David Finch art (that implies some sort of crossover but supposedly there are no plans as of yet): It was probably only a matter of time since the Disney acquisition of Fox. Sad to see another franchise leave Dark Horse though as they did right by Alien/Predator over the years.

Looks like some folks are smelling blood in the Diamond waters, a group of small indie comics veterans are pooling together resources to create a distribution collective for small publishers outside Diamond, focused on creators of color and comics appealing to that segment of fandom. From Bleeding Cool.. Should be interesting. Here's a glimpse at some of their books... -M ps I think I need to read some steamfunk and cyber-fun comics, these just sound like genres that are too cool to ignore.

In Spring 2021, Marvel and Scholastic will team up for a line of middle-grade OGNs to go with their prose collaborations. The first title will be Miles Morales: Shock Waves and they've released the cover: Future titles will feature Shuri and Kamala Khan.

Nice to see Marvel realizing that Scholastic book clubs are the way to get books in the hands of kids... hope that works!
Those covers for the Black indie comix distrobution are awful pretty....definitely looks worth checking out!

I think they are going to sell a boatload of copies of these books. It's the right characters, in the right format, in the hands of the right seller to put them where potential readers will buy them. The only question is price point and with Scholastic, I am pretty sure it will be at the right price point as well. -M

I agree, especially if they can capture any of the vibe from the movie... that was great.
DC seems to have TONS of these (though why they are advertising them in house ads on the regular books I'm not sure, I'm clearly not the target audience)...I'm guessing they're doing decently well. There was one called 'Gotham High' that had high school 'civilian' versions of Joker, Batman and Catwoman on the cover, and what appears to be a romance one with 2 male undersea characters I didn't recognize, no idea if they're new versions of existing characters or new ones.

In October, Tom King will helm the Watchmen spinoff Rorschach for DC's Black Label. Can't wait, King is one of my favorite writers and his 12-part maxi-series are always amazing. This will be a pass for me. If Darwyn Cooke couldn't get me to buy/read a Watchmen spin-ff book with his Before Watchmen stuff, nothing will. -M

I think my actual reaction was "gross."
