2. Superduperman v. Captain Marbles
by Harvey Kurtzman and Wally Wood Mad #4 April-May 1953 Besides being a superduper fun fight this story is considered a turning point for Mad. Prior to this story the stories in Mad had been broader lampoons. As the stories became more focused the sales of Mad increased. The story was cited by Alan Moore as being a big influence on his work, particularly on Watchmen. I considered this one! I laugh out loud just thinking of that word balloon explaining what each letter in SHAZOOM means!

I was disappointed that Bullseye kicker her @$$ so easily. This has always been my complaint about DD #181. I love Miller's run, but the highlight is #169 to #172.

Usagi Versus Jei Usagi Yojimbo #10 "Blade of the Gods" 1988, Fantagraphics Usagi's career as a ronin has led him into many wonderfully staged by the pen of Stan Sakai, but my favorite has to be his first encounter with Jei. With his all black robes, his blank, predatory eyes and fanged grimace he's just the polar opposite of our rabbit ronin, on top of that the challenge that his spear poses to Usagi's twin swrord combat style really makes the exchange more unique.
And the ending? Well it's positively...electrifying:

I was disappointed that Bullseye kicked her @$$ so easily. That's a problem with a lot of superhero comics fights, I find - which is one reason exceptions like Shang Chi vs Cat in MoKF are so impressive.

Usagi Versus Jei Usagi Yojimbo #10 "Blade of the Gods" 1988, Fantagraphics Excellent choice! I'd seriously considered their battle during Grasscutter but hadn't even thought to look back to this first encounter. You're right. It was so much better!

2. Galactus vs. EverybodyFantastic Four # 242-244John Byrne I read a complaint about the first attack by Galactus on earth that the other heroes all should have been there to help the Fantastic Four. Where were the Avengers, Spider-Man , Dr. Strange, etc? Well, this story arc answers those questions when Galactus arrives on earth at a severely starved state and proceeds to do what he does to survive. Terrax the Tamer arrives on earth first and damages most of Manhatten in an attempt to force the FF to help him repel Galactus , but what happens is that the big G is pissed and proceeds to take back the cosmic power from his traitorous herald. In short order Galactus binds the FF and proceeds to assemble his converting equipment when Thor and the Avengers arrive. In concert with the FF and Dr. Strange ( who delivers the key blow) they defeat a drained and noticibly smaller World Devouerer. It’s a Fanfest seeing them all in a tight well drawn story. This is before the days of 12 issue mini series dominating events and making your wallet smaller. I cherished those days, and I cherish this 3 issue arc. Byrne at the peek of his powers and his best FF tale IMHO. {DD and Spidey take a seat}
Marvel was great back then, and Byrne was so on fire with this title.
sigh

Agreed. The Grasscutter battle should have been epic, but somehow it wasn't. Jei is the terrifying unknown in this first encounter. It's extraordinary.

Exactly, I loved how, just like Usagi, we were left wondering if Jei was just some crazy person or if he was really an emissary of the gods...and if the latter, which gods? And although subsequent appearances have been fun and I like how he can transfer his soul into other bodies, like his slasher film name sake his treat does sort of diminish the more you see him but he's definitely still one of my favorite foes for Usagi.

Agreed entirely! I think giving him an origin story was possibly the biggest wrong turn the series ever took. It stripped him of so much of his mystery.

Day Nine Legion of Super-Heroes: The Great Darkness Saga I was so close to going with Superboy 233, the fight with the Infinite Man, as this was the issue which had me fixated with the Legion, like forever since. However this story beats it hands down, Levitz and Giffen at the height of their powers. Giffen had yet to shift to his Munoz(?) inspired blockiness, or his heavy channeling of the King. Levitz would continue for another 5 years or so crafting a group of individuals who developed and grew, and which other writers have had to return to time after time despite/because of decades of Crises. That 30 some years later this is still seen as one of, if not THE best Legion story, speaks volumes. Me, I like it lotsa.

The one between Darkseid, Superboy, and Supergirl which you pictured from LSH #294?
