Young Justice #6: an improvement over the previous issue as the team finally feels like Young Justice (sort of, still not on board with Teen Lantern or Amethyst). A bit is revealed about Teen Lantern (boring). Ginny Hex’s story did grab me and I’m looking forward to learning more about her. Superboy’s story gets some attention and the truth is revealed about the wife and baby. Bits and pieces about the team’s memories and how Conner remembers it all while some of the others don’t. The whole Gemworld story went on a bit too long, but it seems like the book is finally getting moving again now that it is wrapped up. The art was excellent (but sketchy in a few places and hard to follow the layouts a couple of times). 7/10

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #5: new series artist David Lopez joins the mayhem after last issues shocking development with Xander. Buffy, Giles, Willow, And Ms. Calendar (!!!!!) all try to save him while Dru sets her plan in motion to take over Sunnydale. Loved seeing the friendship between Xander, Willow, and Buffy on display. I like the new artwork. The tone, dialogue, Cordelia’s blurb at the beginning of the book and the Sunnydale school paper segment (with some cool Easter eggs) are all spot on. 10/10

Shazam#6: a very uneven issue hindered by constant shift in artists every couple of pages. Billy and Mary end up back at the foster home after temporarily being changed back due to a fight between Black Adam and Dr. Sivana. Billy is reunited with his birth father (best moment of the entire series so far), but I don’t there will be a happy ending. The rest of the kids are still stuck in candy land or whatever it’s called. Mary does something fairly major at the end of the book. This book could be so good and the character deserves much better. I’m going to hang on for now, but reading this each month is becoming a chore. 4/10

Incredible Hulk Last Call. Written by Peter David. Art and Cover by Dale Keown. A One Shot Special. Part of Marvel's 80th year celebration. Reuniting past creative teams from fan favorite runs. David had a 12 year run on the Hulk blessed with several great artists. This story is a flashback that takes place after Betty's death in #466. Bruce does not want to be the Hulk anymore. He doesn't even want to be alive. After several suicide attempts that the Hulk prevents Bruce is despondent until he helps save a girl being stalked by Mr Hyde. Nice story written by David pulling at your emotions. Beautiful art by Keown. Sometimes you can go home again. 9/10.

Shazam! #6. Written by Geoff Johns. Art by Dale Eaglesham, Marco Santucci, Scot Kolins. I liked this one a bit more than @mrjupiter. Yes the frequent changes in locale and artists were annoying (and I blame Johns on some bad choices on telling this story). But finally 2 things happened in this issue that make up for some of the bad storytelling choices. First Billy reunites with his birth father (last seen back in #1!). Second Mary does something on the last page which will totally change the dynamic of the title going forward. I agree the reuniting with Billy's birth father will end up poorly. The art wasn't bad just 3 different styles made for an uneven story. I see the next few issues have been delayed hopefully to allow the artists to get the title back on track. 6/10.

Young Justice #6. Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Art by John Timms. I am beginning to wonder if Ultimate Spider-Man is the only Bendis scripted series I will ever like for an extended period of time? The good: Hopefully the Gem World stuff is over & done with. The bad: Man Bendis is the king of decompression. What should take 2-3 issues he will spread out over 12. It looks like issue 7 will start what should have happened by issue 3. Also we only had one full issue by Gleason followed by 3 partial issues by Gleason who left the book totally last issue to do work at Marvel. Timms' art is fine but Gleason has been doing some of his best work the last few years. A really disappointing re-launch of Young Justice. 4/10.

Quick question - does anyone have any thoughts about the Morrison Green Lantern run, and has any of it been collected yet ?

Quick question - does anyone have any thoughts about the Morrison Green Lantern run, and has any of it been collected yet ? Great start got really weird with issue 7. And weird to the point of being unreadable

I haven't been reading many new books. But I always jump at the chance to read a new Beasts of Burden comic. Beasts of Burden: Presence of Others #2 is the second issue of a micro-series by writer/creator Evan Dorkin and artist Ben Dewey. It's obvious that Dorkin is slowly building to a big confrontation for the animals on the Hill. This two issue series showed the dangers of trusting seeming allies and the lure of power. If you're into weird horror (and even if you aren't...because I'm not that much) I highly recommend the entire run of Beasts of Burden. At its heart it's about loyalty, friendship and sacrifice. With spot-on writing and universally gorgeous artwork.

By far my favourite big 2 book (although, admittedly, the bar isn't exactly that high at the minute.)

You guys have stronger stomachs than I do, after being super pumped to see these books get put out I quickly lost interest. They both just took way to long to go anywhere, and in the case of Shazam the delay didn't help either. There's so much potential for these books but that just isn't enough to keep me reading.

Peter David has long been one of my favorite writers, and his Hulk is probably him at his best and this one shot really spelled out why. PAD just brings so much heart to the Green Goliath, but it never comes off sappy or over bearing but rather earnest and real...and the balance of action was always just right. And you know...I actually liked Deadpool here. Sure it was only a page but I think it was the first time the character actually worked for me. 10/10

I was initially wary of the greater inclusion of humans in this story line, as I've really enjoyed the pure animal world but the way the people were used here only heightened that feeling instead of taking away from it.

Female Furies # 5 - Really a surprisingly good mini with Granny and her Female Furies being the center of the story where Darkseid and his lieutenants are heavily misogynistic, unfair and overbearing to Granny and her women, abusing them in every way possible and Granny's straddling both sides and the Furies awakening to a new way of thinking. Sad that this probably isn't getting the sales it should. Cecil Castellucci has written some female-centric comics I've enjoyed including Sensation Comics, and he's written Shade the Changing Girl, followed appropriately enough, by Shade the Changing Woman, both of which I've heard good things and will later be picking up based on this series. Adriana Melo's art here is pleasing and has flashes of Howard Chaykin, a good thing. I've seen her work before in Plastic Man's recent mini and see she's worked on quite a bit of DC and Marvel. I'm a big New Gods fan, and this is a slightly smaller scale, more human POV but enjoyable. 7.5 / 10 Shazam ! # 6 - Love the characters, I've got faith in Geoff Johns, but I'm getting tired of this mystical lands storyline and want to see how it wraps and what it means. That Mary part, wow ! 7/ 10 Lastly, the first issue of the flagship title from a publisher I love, Humanoids. Here's an intro : IGNITED #1Writers: Mark Waid, Kwanza Osajyefo Artist: Phil Briones Colorist: Andrew Crossley Letterer: Dave Lanphear Cover Artists: Main Cover: Mike McKone Variant Cover: John Cassaday It’s the first day back at Phoenix Academy High, but this year there’s no back to school excitement in the air as returning students and faculty are haunted by memories of last year’s horrific attack. So many friends and colleagues were lost, and some of those who survived underwent changes; they Ignited, gaining supernatural abilities they barely understand. Little do they know this is just the beginning… Here's a link to a 1 minute quickie vid about Humanoids and their new superhero universe imprint H1
I'm a sucker for new universes and Humanoids is top shelf quality. I'm in and will follow and support them and hopefully they'll be around. I like how the premise is based on current events that we're familiar with.
They've got some real talent here.
Off to a good start.
8.5 / 10
