The art was a big part of why I stayed. I love Smith's work and I like John Romita, Jr., especially his staging. I was just about to drop New Mutants when Sienkiewicz took over, so I stuck around exactly as long as he did. But I was so over Claremont (though he's a really nice guy in person).
Cei-U! Ah, the early '80s!
Hm, that's interesting. I dropped New Mutants after Sienkiewicz came on board because I thought his art was ill-suited to the title. I wasn't really a big fan of NM in general, but I was so into all things X at the time that I felt almost duty-bound to read it. And I liked the art by McLeod and then Sal Buscema - they actually looked like kids ranging from their early to late teens, whereas I thought Sienkiewicz made them all look like twenty-somethings.

This is why I like forums, you always learn something. It never crossed my mind to consider the Cerebro/Morlocks plot hole, but now it's been mentioned, I completely agree! There are quite a few elements of a 500 member tribe living under New York City that don't withstand more than a few minutes scrutiny. Where do they get their food? Some of them can be handwaved away with a Morlock whose power is to solve whatever problem one might raise, e.g. a cloaking Morlock to defeat Xavier/Cerebro. This was actually the explanation given in Uncanny X-Men #169. However, Paul Smith had drawn a much larger Morlock colony than the small gang which Claremont had envisioned, and to avoid these sorts of questions, Claremont found it expedient to winnow the Morlocks down to a much smaller tribe in the "Mutant Massacre" storyline.

Excalibur but only if Davis has some type of input.
2099 would get my second vote. It was interesting to see how future mutants viewed, enacted, and/or modified the legacies of Xavier and Magneto.

Good to see some votes for Excalibur.
Elsewhen is still ahead.

Always liked the concept of Excalibur and it would be nice to revisit as long as it remains set in England and Europe while combined with a creative/interesting mix of international mutants. Put Captain Britain as the old guard powerhouse with a return to him being more intelligent/scholarly (why he chose the pendant and not the sword you Putzes) along with German Nightcrawler as leader once more. Toss in Japanese Sunfire who has never really had an opportunity at longevity in a series, Banshee's daughter along with Shamrock (why not 2 Irish lasses and why not their being a couple?) to the mix, Darkstar for some Russian moxy, Sabra the Israeli superheroine, and the addition of 2 newly created heroes. Place Spitfire and Pete Wisdom as the government liaison's and intelligence connection.

Being a Brit, I'd be partial to some more Excalibur exploits.

I'd also vote for Excalibur, but I'd expect Captain Britain to be team leader.

I have ZERO interest in any X-Men now ... I rather read the old and vintage X-Men anyday and anytime of the day, weeks, months, year, and decades over anything else these DAYS.

Haven't seen anything in over 10 years to make me want to pick up and read an X-Men comic book. Sadly the same goes for FF, Avengers and Justice League of America. Perhaps an occasional issue but not to follow on a regular basis. Sometimes it is better to live in the past, if you are reading comic books at least

I'm curious about the 4 votes for other. For those who voted "Other", what's on your mind?

I feel confident we will eventually realize the only reason people ever bought X-comics is that they might see more of the Cafe-A-Go-Go.

I'm curious about the 4 votes for other. For those who voted "Other", what's on your mind? Can't speak for others but my "other" vote was for another X-Men: First Class type comic, I loved Jeff Parker's run and I didn't mind he recent All-New X-Men that featured younger versions of the original X-Men coming to the present.

The last time I cared about the X-men was when Morrison wrote it. And I have zero interest in anything Byrne does these days as a I feel he has nothing left in the tank.

Not saying this for confrontational reasons (intent can be lost online), but I'd be interested in hearing more about your thoughts on Byrne's "tank being empty".
