Hawkman #9: Wow- the previous 8 issues have been building up to this where the action hits the fan. After a panicked scene with Madame Xanadu, the Deathbringers arrive on Earth to Hawkman’s horror. The writing, art, and characterization is all spot on. This book is the perfect blend of super heroics, mystery, adventure, science fiction, and most of all, consistent top notch storytelling. My only complaint is I read it so fast as I wanted to see what would happen! 10/10

Superman #8: not a bad issue, just a bit of a chore to get through as it focuses on Jon’s trip with Jor-El which turns a bit sour. I did like the scene of Superman looking for something to hit when he’s frustrated with the fact he’s missed his son grow up, thanks to his own father. The ending looks promising! 6/10

Savage Sword of Conan #1. Written by Gerry Duggan. Art by Ron Garney. Wow that was an awesome first issue! It starts with Conan adrift at sea. Conan is rescued by a pirate ship only to find himself destined to be sold into slavery. Conan fights back once his health returns and finds the pirate crew is not human? He escapes and washes up on an island... Conan is a versatile character. He can play so many roles. This issue has him crossing paths with dark magic and prevailing. Well written and beautifully illustrated by Garney. I can't wait for #2! 9/10. Yeah, I like this one too.. but It's weird seeing a decompressed Conan story. I also didn't love yet another battle when Conan is the last survivor.. that happens a bit too often, IMO. I thought it was pretty good. It reminded me of some of the SSoC not Roy Thomas middle run. The only things I did not like was how Conan dismembered a living crewman, to get a finger bone for a lock pick. That was torture and although he is a barbarian, that is something completely out of character for Conan. Roy Thomas would never have written that in a story; it seems influenced by modern horror. Also did not like how Conan woke up in a rage and did not even try to assess his situation before attacking everyone, including the slave who nursed him back to health. Again, overall, a decent story and good start, but the writers of these series still have not fully captured the essence of the character.

I figured the strong the reaction was simply Conan's total aversion to being a slave.. I agree the finger bone thing was out of character... seems like he would try to break them first.
