I suppose that's true. The petition is signed to the CDC, so I guess the point was to garner enough signers to get the CDC's attention about the matter, anyway, whether or not it'll actually happen. You don't think that maybe the CDC is already well aware of the ebola virus and present dangers? Now I'm wondering if that sounds unnecessarily snarky. I feel that between Fox News and Facebook, I am seeing a lot of misinformation and unneeded panic regarding this particular virus. Part of the pattern of public obsession with picking the wrong dangers to focus on. I find it irksome and I was a little sad to see it spread to my comic book forum. I don't mean to make you the emblematic punching bag for what I see as a cultural problem. |

As I've mentioned, I get anxious about these types of situations, and have a tendacy to overreact, and at times even be ignorant about things, for paranoia's sake. It's been a stressful couple of days for me, which is in no way an excuse, but doesn't help my anxiety and blindness to rationality, and not being fully informed on the matter didn't help either. My anxiety is something I deal with, and I didn't mean to cause any sort of bother to the forum and in hindsight regret my decision to share my thoughts on the matter (because in retrospect, I can see how 'blown-out of porportion' they might appear.) And I suppose that same overreaction is the spark for the flame of panic was see elsewhere on the internet. Again, I'm sorry for any disruption this caused, and am more than willing to let this discussion die off. EDIT: To clarify, the post you originally quoted, I was referring to the CDC becoming of aware of the possibility of a limited flight ban, not awareness to the virus itself, but I've already had reasons why a ban is not beneficial explained. Now I understand, realizing my fears were unfounded and the matter is settled in that regard. |

There is, however a certain irony when one juxtaposes the quote from Psalms in your signature and your reactions. There is a lot of wisdom in the quote, it's a good sentiment to embrace. If I can make a friendly suggestion, since you do cop to a tendency to overreact, that when you see yourself reacting in such a manner, stop for a moment and think about that quote and if perhaps there is a better way for your own peace of mind to react to what it is that has you worked up. Not so much about bothering others here, but about finding your own center and peace of mind. Life is stressful enough without adding to that stress needlessly-being raised Catholic, one of the tenets that resonated with me was the Serenity prayer which was in just about every other classroom I had classes in (and after teaching for a decade came to understand why  )...paraphrasing here-Give me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Our mortality can make us fearful at times. Do not allow those who profiteer from fear make it worse. Find your own center, make your peace of mind. Who you are is the message you send to the world, so if you want to espouse a message in your signature, try to be the message you want to send. Failure is always a possibility, but you cannot succeed if you never make the attempt. Two messages to consider-" The only thing to fear is fear itself" FDR and Follow your bliss! -Joseph Campbell Ebola is what it is. Reasonable precautions are being taken. Beyond that, you have to choose how you will live your own life moving forward man, that's all there is to it. -M |

Thank you for the support, and uplifting tone. It's my burden to bear I suppose, and I always strive to keep the peace about situations that unsettle me, and like you said, sometimes you fail. I've dealt with anxiety for some time, and I feel embarrassed it got the better of me here by my 'jumping the gun' and being hysterical about all of this. Thanks for the encouragement, man. I really appreciate it.  |

Remember I could be talking absolute garbage and my assurances could be utter nonsense. In truth, this is very likely.  I appreciate you thoughts on the matter. I don't watch a lot of news, but any that I catch really has just been peddling panic and fear about the matter ...and that's your first mistake, never listen to mainstream media on these matters. Remember, it's in the popular press's interests to peddle fear and heighten your anxiety: it keeps you buying their newspapers and/or watching their news bulletins. I hope I don't sound like some conspiracy-addled, "they're all out to get me!" nut job when I say that, but the media here in the UK do love to milk even the most inconsequential situation, until it seems like we're on the brink of a civilisation threatening cataclysm. And I bet the popular media's even worse for that kind of fear mongering in the U.S. Oh, and don't worry….no annoyance caused by your posts here as far as I can see. But you gotta learn to relaaaaaax, man. |

I get my news from Facebook. Not having cable, I just subscribe to the local and national news outlets there. I only get headlines, but I seem to be pretty up to date on most things, although sometimes a major event gets mentioned off hand and I realize I hadn't heard a thing about it.

I get my news from Facebook. Not having cable, I just subscribe to the local and national news outlets there. I only get headlines, but I seem to be pretty up to date on most things, although sometimes a major event gets mentioned off hand and I realize I hadn't heard a thing about it. Same here, pretty much, except less, as I don't pay attention to any of the news outlets. As I've noted before, I no longer have audio in my car, so no more occasional listens to NPR, even. I figure if it's important, I'll hear about it at work. If it happens on a weekend, I'll hear about it Monday. And if it happens while I'm on vacation, so it goes. |

I had a daydream today that scientist succeeded in defeating Ebola, not by eradicating it, but by redirecting it to only affect useless, untalented and annoying religious leaders, celebrities and politicians (granted that's basically all of them) like Pat Robertson, the Kardashian's, Ryan Seacrest and Miley Cyrus. Conversely, it would have the opposite effect on people of worth, so someone like, say, Stephen Hawkins would totally regenerate and start doing cartwheels within a few days.

We have been basically operating a no fly policy for West Africa for decades. Getting a Visa to get out of those countries is always incredibly difficult and the very minimal euro and US tourist trade to the countries most affected will have dried up totally so for all intents and purposes it is a de facto no fly zone anyway.
