So very sorry to hear all of this, Scott. I know you were taking on a lot of stress even prior to this, but going through all of that with your father must have been utterly devastating. I have been there, myself. What an odd twist of fate to be battling all of this while fulfilling a dream at the same time. I applaud your stamina and resolve, sir, and am here if I can be of help in any way.

Thanks, shax, I appreciate it. At least I got to show him the comic. One of the real hard parts is that I'm getting married in December and we were all really looking forward to him being there. That's been tough.

I haven't been in this thread for awhile and sorry about your Dad; and all ... hang in there and understand your concerns deeply.

My BF went through a nearly identical thing with losing his father a couple of years ago, who was a vet from the U.S. Navy (but at a time when there were no hot wars on). I'm glad I got to know him a bit and spend a little time with him, even our Dads got to meet once. I feel bad if I get a bit cranky about my Dad's small faults, I know I'm lucky to have him around still.

Sorry to hear about your father, Crimebuster. It's a terrible thing to lose a parent, especially if you are close. We lost my Dad over a decade ago now, but there were questions and issues pertaining to misdiagnosis that still linger now, so I know how that feels.

I'm trying to decide what to do for the Boy Comics variant cover for the second issue. If I go with an homage cover like I did for the first one, I am leaning towards doing an homage of Simon and Kirby's cover for Adventure Comics #74 showing the new Sandman. But I may instead go with Eerie #1, the golden age comic considered the first horror comic.
Or I could do something completely new of my own design.
What do you guys think? Would you rather have an homage, or something new for the Boy Comics variant? And if it's an homage, what book would you like to see me take a crack at? One of those two? Or something else?

Instead of homaging a comic, maybe homage a classic teen detective novel cover-a Hardy Boys cover, Three Investigators, cover, or Nancy Drew cover? Some of those covers were iconic for the kids who grew up reading them. -M I'll think about it! I am doing sort of an homage to the teen detective genre with the Trixie's Mysteries covers, but that's more design than specific images. I'll look at some of the book covers for inspiration!

Gotta agree with MRP. In particular the Hardy Boys covers from early in the series (the 1959 Nappi covers) have a lot of nostalgia with the 40-60 year old set. And they have the advantage of usually having at least two and occasionally three people on the cover, whereas Nancy Drew was usually solo.

Funny thing is, though I put together complete sets of both The Three Investigators and Trixie Belden, I don't think I ever actually read either Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys. I'm not sure why - I definitely liked the characters, as I can remember as a kid playing "Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys" with my cousins, no doubt due to the TV series which was popular at the time (this is the mid-late 1970's). So I'm not actually that familiar with the book covers for the series - but I will do some research! I've been meaning to start reading and re-reading some of these old teen mystery books for inspiration and to study the style, so this is a good excuse.

Every month I email readers the latest Crimebusters Case Files - and tomorrow I'll be sending out the October edition. This month's Case Files will include my thoughts on the one element every good story must have. Plus, I'll have a progress update on issue #2, news about upcoming con appearances, a report about last month's show including mini-reviews of some comics I picked up there, recommendations for current Kickstarter projects, and the creation of a new resource for fans of Golden Age superheroes. And more! If you haven't signed up to become a Junior Crimebuster yet, j ust click here to get deputized and you'll get the new Case Files when it goes out tomorrow, as well as a digital ashcan with previews for both issues #1 and #2 of The Crimebusters. Adventure awaits!
