Tis' the season ladies and gent's, boys and girls: start your fright engines! With all the choices available in movie's these days from the 30's up to current times what is your favorite scary delights to indulge in for the fall festivities? I have liking's for all sorts of the movies which deliver bumps in the night but by far my favorite 2 are classics now:
The Monster's from Universal studios which today don't seem all that horrific and yet they for me capture the mood and essence of Halloween nights and entertain like no others. Many forget or don't appreciate these black and white gems thinking them simplistic or silly but they don't take in to account that at their time of creation they were cutting edge movie making full of chills, frights and lots of scares. Whether it be Drac on a drinking binge, Dr. Frank's Monster wandering in search of a friend, our boy Wolfie chasing his tail, a Creature enjoying a late night swim with a lovely lady or some invisible folks or shrinking guy or scientific doc or criminal experimented upon or any sci-fi creature from beyond doesn't matter to me. All of these were movies I grew up with watching on weekend mornings or late night repeats and Halloween marathons. I come across any of these while flipping channels and I will stay on that channel, even though I have most on DVD and can watch at my leisure. These are CLASSICS in the real sense.
My other choice of blood curdling fun is the Hammer Horror films of the 1970's which updated many of the classic Universal movies but this time in bold, shocking color to enhance the scariness. Hammer could not be beaten for sets and costuming and their creative use of color palettes still remains uniquely bold and striking today. And while all their movies carried a 70's vibe which crossed over into the historical settings (clothes/hairstyles/etc of actors and actresses) being able to see these spectacles of mayhem up on the big screen fresh and new imprinted them in my memory and mind for all eternity (damned or otherwise, thank you) to enjoy.
Honorable mention to my time as a young adult in the 80's when a new generation of "monsters" came along to entertain us with their bloody ways. The advent of Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhee's restored the scary potential of movies with their inventive deadly kills and high body counts. It was a revival of the horrific monstrous villainy of old for a new generation and proof of the strength of their creativity that even today there are still new movies being made with these folks.
So let us all give our shouts (of love or fear) and howl at the midnight moon in delight of those movies which scare(d) us or continue to provide gruesome chuckles and chills in the cold damp evenings of fall and winter.......BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
