I absolutely love Gustav Dore's engravings. I have a big book of his illustrations and an even bigger coffee table reproduction of his London, A Pilgrimage with the original text. Just a fantastic artist.

Just a fantastic artist. I've got a large 19th Century Italian translation of Paradise Lost with Dore engravings that came from my grandparents' house.

shaxper and others here have commented in the past on the influence of the woodcuts of Gustave Dore on the history of comics, but did anyone know there was a comic collecting those woodcuts? Wow, a blast from the past! I was given a copy of that along with The Companions of Ulysses issue, back what--oh I guess it's about 20 years ago, now? Anyway the two "comics" were a Christmas or birthday gift or something. IIRC (though I could be misremembering it) it's not in panels etc., more along the lines of (great) illustrations alongside the text. I'd love to take a look to refresh my recollection but most of my comics, and tons of my books and other things are in another residence--aaandd of course not the one I'm not sequestered in

Anything worth while in those packs ? Depends what you mean--I didn't look at them, but probably ok value for readers. I might pick a couple up for my grandson.

I'm another admirer of Doré's work and buy pretty much anything I can get my hands on at a cheap price. Of the things I've seen, I think the best match between his style and the material being illustrated was Danté's Inferno, but I like all of it. There was a Doré exhibition at the museum here a few years ago - it was one of those travelling exhibits so I'm sure it made its way to museums near many of our other members here as well. It was interesting to see his paintings - very different effect to the drawings.
My favourite Paradise Lost illustrations are by John Martin, an early 19th-century English artist who specialised in monumental paintings of epic historical, Biblical, and literary themes. but I have not been able to find a reasonably priced edition up to now - which reminds me, I haven't checked for a while, so I must have another look online soon.

Wegmans? Are you from Rochester? Yeah--well, Fairport Awesome! I lived the majority of my life in Greece. I've been in Florida the past few years though. We've probably discussed this before and I forgot. I knew there was a Rochesterian on this board somewhere. I was spoiled in comic shops up there!

Jack Kirby brought us Captain Marvel?! With all of Jack's creations to pick from, they brag about a character for which he and Joe Simon drew, what, a single issue? Odd... Apparently there's a story out there that C.C. Beck approached Kirby about helping him revive Captain Marvel at DC when Kirby was there, and Kirby is the one who went to bat for him and convinced the editors to do a new Captain Marvel book (or Shazam! as it was going to be called then), but because of certain animosities and office politics editorial didn't want Kirby on the book so gave it to the Superman office to launch instead. Not sure if that is an allusion to that story or not. Of course it could have been an error/confusuion by a production dept. not that familiar with Kirby and it should have been the Marvel Heroes which got changed to Captain Marvel or some such as well. -M
