Iommi, Gillan, Newsted, Lord, McBrain. Damn. I treated my wife to this song the other day and told her she must have instantly fallen in love with the riff, right? She told me nay. I just don't understand.
And another Sabbath spin-off I've been playing in heavy rotation. Most or all of the lyrics on this album are apparently based on '60s British TV shows.
For some reason I wasn't expecting Geezer to be so heavy when left to his own devices.

I just don't understand. Iommi is the master of the heavy riff, a seemingly endless well. I feel a little bad for saying this, but this song just screams Dio vocals to me, and I wonder if it might have been a Heaven & Hell song if Ronnie had not passed when he did. Not a knock at all on the legendary Mr. Gillan, his range had just gotten more limited at this point. That's a great line-up overall though!

It never occurred to me, but now that you mention it, it takes no imagination at all to hear Dio singing this.

Hard to believe my favourite Duran Duran song is 40 years old. (The Night Version Remix with the ribald video is my fave mix of all).
Girls on Film was on the UK charts exactly 40 years ago this week, in July 1981. Several years before my time but still....
This is the 7-inch single release in Japan...it had a picture sleeve, compared to the bland sleeve used in the UK.

This is still my favorite Duran Duran... although I doubt if he's much of a singer.

I'm still mesmerized by Yoakam's version of Purple Rain. And now I find this. Dwight Yoakam is a damn treasure. And the mandolin in this is insanely good.

Classic song. So many of their singles in the early-to-mid 80s were classic. If I had to pick a favourite though I'd probably go for "Rio" -- great tune, good lyrics, super-catchy chorus, awesome drum and bass playing, and then there's that keyboard arpeggiator part, which is to die for. It's just a brilliant, brilliant pop song.

I used to listen to Yoakam a lot more - even had his Hillbilly Deluxe album (on cassette - to give you an idea of how long ago). By the way, if you like that mandolin work in this song, I can't help but wonder if you'd like tamburica music (basically the Croatian national instrument, although it's played in neighboring countries as well).

My older brother had the follow-up to this one, Goodnight Vienna. Yeah, not as good, but still enjoyable in a lightweight kind of way. I'd like to listen to the first two sometime, the ones that came out before Ringo, never have heard either of them .
I still think It Don't Come Easy is one of the best singles done by any of the ex-Beatles! I see it's included as a bonus track on the cd edtion of Ringo.

Yeah, in the past I've owned his first two -- Sentimental Journey (which is dire) and Beaucoup Of Blues (which is a pleasant, but inessential country & western album) -- and his fourth Goodnight Vienna, but I eventually got rid of them. They just didn't do it enough for me to hang on to them. I've also listened to his fifth album at a friend's, Rotogravure, but it was totally forgettable. For me, Ringo is the only album of his that is good enough that I will pull it out every now and then and give it a spin for pleasure. As for the non-album single "It Don't Come Easy", yeah, it's a really good song. Not sure I'd go so far as to call it "one of the best singles done by any of the ex-Beatles!", but it is definitely a good record.
