Have I mentioned that I absolutely love Dwight Yoakam's cover of Purple Rain? That's an interesting take on it because Prince originally wrote Purple Rain as a country song. I'm not sure that it was necessarily as jaunty as this version...it may've been more of a slow country lament. But it only evolved away from its country roots when he began jamming the song with his backing group at the time, the Revolution. It was their input -- guitarist Wendy Melvoin's especially -- that helped to transform it into the Gospel-tinged anthem that we all know and love.

One of my favorite cross-genre covers.

Just rediscovered this 1976 Rod Stewart song. Wow! I vaguely remember hearing it before but had no idea about the true story behind it. Thumbs up for Rod!

I've been absorbing the outtakes and demos collections titled Angel's Share for the Grateful Dead albums Workinghman's Dead and American Beauty.... five hours listening in total, mostly very high quality. Fascinating hearing these songs develop in the studio (and one that didn't make it but turned up in a solo Garcia album). If you think The Dead were scary acid and gang dudes you should check out American Beauty someday (and then Workingman's), these albums rival the best of The Byrds and Gram Parsons... even my Mom loves these two, and she don't like nothing weird. I dig the bluesy Pigpen spotlights a lot too. And as if that weren't enough esoterica, I got ahold of the 'Jamaican mix' version of The Wailers' Catch A Fire album (with two tracks that were cut from it) This is Bob (just freed from Johnny Nash) Marley, Peter (Macin)Tosh, Bunny (Neville Livingston) Wailer, and Barret bros. sans the Island Records overdubs by English musicians. Being as my favorite Wailers was the live in studio session a little after this for KSAN radio, I'm pretty happy with this version of the album!

I missed out on a lot of Quebec music as a kid; luckily, veterans like Paul Piché are still at it. Beautiful song.

I've been trying to delve into more Quebec music myself the last few years but I think this is the first I've heard of Paul Piché, will have to add him to my list of artists to give a listen to.

I always liked Tom "T-Bone" Stankus comedy version, which got a lot of airplay on the Dr Demento Show

In the wake of stress, stupidity and pandemics, I turned to a little fun from Mud....
Rock and Roll needs more choreography!
The Go-go guys are the band's roadies. This was the way to do Top of the Pops, since it was all lip sync (notice the guitars aren't plugged in); so, you might as well have fun.
Some more Mud...
Man, I miss Glam Rock!

Burn, by the Cure, from the Crow soundtrack was my favourite song from 1994.
This cover, by Anix, is just as awesome. Really love it
