Interesting, but I really don’t believe that those tires looks like the arms and legs of a man:

Thirty five years ago today, the British £1 note ceased to be legal tender. Here’s what it looked like: I remember it well and in fact still have one. I can also just about remember the previous £1 note design, which ceased to be legal tender around 1978...

You’re right, still feels like a leap, but I don’t disagree with you.

Well, remember, you are looking at a cartoonist's version of the stack, not the actual stack that supposedly inspired the idea.

Thanks to the All About History website, I learnt that the Worshipful Company of Bakers is one of the oldest livery companies in London, with a history dating back 800 years.
Curiously, there were separate guilds for white bread-bakers and brown bread-bakers, until Elizabeth I united them.
I wonder, was there a pragmatic reason for white bread-bakers and brown bread-bakers having separate guilds, or, cynically, just mankind dividing itself again?

You're asking an American about separating people by color? Long history of that around these parts...

So white bread and brown bread, not the actual skin colour of the bakers. (I should have worded it better) Some people have said that brown bread is more nutritious, so was that a factor? EDIT: Wikipedia has the answer: Hopefully I have that right, and it wasn’t about skin colour.

Although had those hyphens not been there...

Ah, I see. I am absolutely the worst person at interpreting humour, my friend. I’m in a different time zone when it comes to getting humour. And, yes, the hyphens.

My posts should come with a user warning. No apology necessary, but I’m about five hours behind EST when it comes to understanding a joke.
