When a new comic book series comes out thats only either 6 issues or at least 12 issues such as the Power of the Dark Crystal do you wait until the last couple of issues are in the comic shop and then you start reading the comic book limited series?
Thats what Im doing at the moment.
I have pretty much all of the first 9 issues of Power of the Dark Crystal. Issue 10 came out last month I think and then issues 11 and 12 are out this month but Ill wait until March to buy the last 3 issues then Ill binge read the whole Power of the Dark Crystal series.
Same thing with Snotgirl of Image Comics. I still need to get issues 7 and 8 if 8 is out already in comic book shops.

I tend to buy it as it comes unless there are several out at once that I'm interested in and my budget gets too thin.

I missed out on issues 6 and 7 for awhil until I just bought them off of the Things from another world website.
Im caught up with the first 9 issues but for the last remamining three Ill wait awhile and get them later on in March or April.
Same thing Im doing with the X-Men's Pheonix Resurrection. I just bought issue 3 a couple of days ago and waiting to buy issues 4 and 5 later on. Heck I still need to get issues 4 and 5 of the new recent Elektra mini series

I always read the first couple of issues to make sure I like it enough to keep reading. After that, I may wait for the rest to come out or for a few issues to pile up before reading more, but not always. Just depends what's on my stack to read and what I am in the mood to read. There are a lot of choices and life is too short to keep buying and reading bad comics, so I always sample the first few to make sure unless it is a creative team that has a proven track record with me (say Brubaker/Phillips for instance) that I know I will enjoy pretty much no matter what.

For non Big Two stuff, I will generally read the first one.. if it's REALLY good, I'll get the single issues to help encourage it as an ongoing concern, but generally read them by story line. If it's decent, but not great, I'll put the #1 in the box-of-stuff-to-sell-or-give-away, and buy the trade when it hits.

The individual issues are expensive enough to keep me from trying something just on a whim. I have to have a pretty good idea that I'm going to want to read the thing if I'm going to spend that kind of money - and if that's the case I'm probably going to wait for the trade anyway.
This is why I think it's a real smart idea for publishers to put up the first issue or a good sample of it online for free. For example, that's how I got into Godland, which I had been 50/50 on trying before reading that first issue online and being won over by it.

I read them as they come out. What if it's junk like Secret wars 2? The only series that I bought and read all at once is Watchmen. I had the first 11 and I had to wait for # 12 to come out a few months.

I might wait of it's a old series. I rather get them all before reading it if it's World of Krypton or The Balder mini from back in the day.

Will read the 1st issue to see if I want to pick up the entire mini-series or not. Then I pick up each issue as they come out and read it all in one once I have all of the issues. Sometimes I will trade wait: like for the Kamandi Challenge versus getting all the singles.

I don't really get the "will comit to the series if I like the first issue" : how many books and movies didn't grab me in their first act before completely winning me over later on? Quite many if not the majority. When I decide I want to try a series when it is currently being published, I buy it monthly and more than often don't strart reading it before it's concluded. Sometimes I get disappointed, but less and less so (I barely buy any Marvel or DC though, as 90% of my buying is Dark Horse and Image. CUrrently, I'm only buying Punisher The Platoon, Batman White Knight and Mr Miracle blindly), and I'm fine with that : the ratio still is much more positive than with movies.

I summon the broken analogy!

I summon the broken analogy! It is, because when I make my decision to follow a mini - after much pondering - I commit to the entirety of it and already know the global price of it, so it's no different from buying one book or one theatre ticket (just more expensive most of the time), as I only see the result as a whole in the end. (plus the fact that I only visit my LCS every 4-5-6 months at best). Edit : to be clear, these days, I NEVER start reading a limited series before I have all the issues in my possession, which probably explains more my stance. I'm not saying it's the right or best way to go, but again, I don't really get the "will commit to the series if I like the first issue", because of how often I've been surprised by unexpected improvement in quality after first act. So my MO now is to trust my instincts after I chose in the first place to sart a series. And the few mistakes along the line only enhances the actual good choices

I wanted to bail on the latest Secret Wars series but I had it on my pull list and didn't wanna screw my LCS. I have no problem dropping a bad book, given the prices these days.

It's not like if I didn't like the 1st issue it's gone forever... if the series gets good press, or good reviews here, I'll certainly look at it again and consider the trade, but they have to grab me to start if they want my money right off
