I like MRPs idea, but I'd think it more likely that they do some sort of 'young Conan' type book as one of the three... franchise owners seem obsessed with Origin stories these days.
I could even see it being a Superboy-like book where we get Conan as a youth in Cimmeria.
Aaron on Conan sounds great, as long as he doesn't do it instead of Thor (unless he's out of Thor ideas, in which case fine)

The old Marvel Comics Conan I grew up with in the early 1980s when I was a little kid while also growing up with Alpha Flight and power pack back then.
The Conan comic was pretty violent at the time in the early 1980s.
Then it kinda toned down a bit in the mid 1990s.
Just recently I bought issue 206 from the comic shop this past weekend. Just a random old issue I picked out since I'm rebuilding my Conan the Barbarian collection a little bit

Hopefully they don't use the coloring Dark Horse had in the Conan Chronicles. I had a good chunk of those but sold them off as I picked up the actual issues and completed the series. The coloring just did't quite jibe with the mood and feel of the Hyborian Age. I'll have to see sample pages of the omnibus before I even consider getting it. It will include covers and letters pages though, so that's something to consider. -M

Here’s a Sample of Glénat’s Queen of the Black Coast. I don’t know what to make of it. It looks good, but we’ve seen these stories before and the new interpretations are not that novel. It’s the same with Marvelks new series... Will they build on what we saw before, or just be the adventures of a loincloth-wearing barbarian named Conan? Kurt Busiek succeeded in his reboot by doing his own thing while staying very true to Howard, but that’s a difficult trick to manage. Well the originals are in the public domain in Europe because copyright laws are different there, but I am not sure how trademarks work in international law, so Glenat can do adaptations of the originals without any loopholes to jump through, but I am not sure they can do new original material and effectively market it with the trademarks still belonging to Paradox, so I understand why they might start with or only do adaptations of Howard stories. There's something called the Madrid Protocol that allows holders of US trademarks to receive protection in over 90 other countries if the proper applications are filed and approved. No clue if Paradox has done this. -M

Word out today Marvel will be doing Epic Collections of the Dark Horse Conan material, starting with the Busiek/Nord stuff (much like they did collections of the DH Star Wars stuff when they got the license) probably a fair trade off, as DH did collections of the Marvel stuff while they had the license. I wonder/m hoping if Marvel will add all of that Conan material to Unlimited the way they did the Star Wars stuff too.

Since Marvel doesn't do Essentials anymore it's not going to happen, but having all the Barry Smith material in black and white and under one cover is a very nice idea. The Dark Horse recoloured comics don't do it for me. Way too much photoshop effects and gradients; Smith's fine line work is often lost under all that coloured ink. (But maybe an Epic collection reprinting the comics with their original colouring could be produced?)

Aaron sounds enthusiastic about the series.
Thank Crom he mentioned the Howard stories and not the Arnold movies as his inspiration!

In February and March, Savage Sword of Conan and Age of Conan join Conan the Barbarian. No creative teams announced yet.

Like many of the current crop of comics writers, Aaron has turned me off with of what I've seen of his Marvel work so I'm not too enthused about him as a writer for the new Conan, But most likely there'll other s who'll get a crack at it, so I'll keep my eyes open for any news. A lot will depend on the artwork, as always.
Is it just Conan, BTW, or has Marvel regained the rights to other REH characters like Kull and Solomon Kane as well?

I can see Aaron going either way.... his Thor was great, and it was great in a way that makes me think he could be really good on Conan... but he could also do his go too far afield (ala Wood) and have it be not really Conan. Is it possible Savage Sword could be like the old days? That would certainly be different from anything else on the market right now.

I'm thinking it's going to be a solid read, his young viking Thor had a lot of moments that felt like Conan so I have faith when handling the real thing he'll nail it.
