There's a documentary coming out about Dave Arneson called Secrets of Blackmoor that relates the history of that first group of players who playtested and created D&D with Arneson. The doc itself is getting a pre-release screening at GaryCon this coming spring in Lake Geneva (the successor to Gen Con in the town where Gary Gygax lived and the TSR started), and there's a trailer for the documentary up on youtube...
I had a chance to meet Dave and sit down with him for about an hour and just talk stuff (gaming, teaching, etc.) when he was a guest of honor at Origins about ten years or so ago when the scheduled one of his panels against two of the biggest tournaments there and I was just about the only person in the attendance for the panel. He was a fascinating dude and that panel remains one of the highlights of my gaming con experiences. I look forward to checking this documentary out when it becomes available.
