Hellboy: KrampusnachtWritten by Mike Mignola Art by Adam Hughes Summary: After investigating a strange occurrences at a small church in the German woods Hellboy throws down with the Krampus. Plot: If you're a fan of the early, one and done misadventures of Hellboy like I am then this new Christmas tale by Mignola will leave you thrilled. It's simple in the set up, light on characterization but the action is fun. It's one of those stories where Hellboy shows up, finds something weird and then punches a monster which is how it all began. Don't get me wrong, I love how deep and layered the world of Hellboy has become but sometimes a story where a big red guy smacks around monsters is enough. Art: I was a little leery when I saw Hughes was attached to this project; I love his photo-realistic look when it comes to pin ups but I wasn't sure how it would translate to a horror book but he really surprised me. There was a hint a hint of his usual realistic style, and the mother ghost definitely looked like a pin up model but there was also a definite moody feel to it that made it work as a Hellboy story. Grade: 10/10 Being half German, I am down with anything Krampus related, haha! Great review!

Kong on the Planet of the Apes #2Written by Ryan Ferrier Art by Carlos Magno Summary: As the Apes trek through the jungle they learn of the horrors of Skull Island before meeting Kong and the humans who worship him. Plot: With the Apes finally on the island I was really hoping for the pace to really ratchet up, but it was strangely exposition heavy yet again. Sure there were some great creature encounters on the island but they came off as feeling kind of perfunctory rather than thrilling. I really liked the world building in the last issue but it seemed to stall out a bit here and I'm not entirely sure where its all going. Are they here to try and bring Kong back to their home? To what end? Sadly there were no answers. Art: Mago's creatures are fun, I especially liked the pterodactyls, but at times the panels were a little cluttered which made the action muddled.
Grade:6/10

I actually picked this up yesterday but haven't had a chance to hunker down and read it yet. I only get to the LCS every 4-6 weeks so I never know what came out which week when I pick up my new stuff. -M

Super Sons of Tomorrow:
Superman #37. Written by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. Art by Jorge Jimenez.
Super Sons #11. Written by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. Art by Ryan Benjamin.
Parts one & two. Part 3 in next week's Teen Titans #15.
We see Future Tim Drake as Batman returning to stop Jon from destroying Metropolis in the future. In Superman he takes down Bruce & Clark. In Super Sons he takes down the Teen Titans. Next week the Titans of Tomorrow try to stop Tim.
We see some loose ends from the Batman & Superman titles being tied up with this arc. The first 2 parts were awesome. It appears that at the end of this story we may see Conner & Cassie & Bart restored to this DCU. The art in both parts was beautiful.
9/10.
I picked up the back issues from Detective to get into this and it was well worth it. The future Tim story is a lot of fun and unlike most crossovers this feels natural rather than disruptive to the stories being told.

Superman 37 And Supersons 11: WOW! A crossover I don’t mind following! Tim’s brutal take down of Bruce Wayne and then outsmarting Superman—fantastic visuals, almost cinematic. I am not very familiar with the Teen Titans and how Raven and Starfire are characterized these days, but the Teen Titans seem like a fun team. Damien didn’t annoy me like he usually does. What a treat to see Conner, Cassie, and Bart. Before the new 52 nonsense, Superboy (Conner) was my favorite. I loved the jeff Lemire series and was very disappointed in how Superboy was depicted in the new 52. I was even more sad that he was seemingly erased in Rebirth. Here’s hoping he returns, t-shirt, jeans, and all! (Cassie and Bart too). Superman 10/10 Supersons 9/10 (the art went a little wonky in places)

X-Men Grand Design #1 Written by Ed Piskor Art by Ed Piskor Summary: The Watcher recounts the story of mutantkind to a Recorder, going back to the fight between Namor and the original Human Torch and ending this episode at the formation of the original X-Men with Jean Grey joining the team. Plot: Been a while since I did this, but this one was interesting. It's printed on the old newspaper (or rather a facimile I think?) and deals with a lot of the original backstory. There is no overarching story, it's connecting the stories of the various mutants together. It changes some of the smaller plotpoints, but as an old school X-Men fan, I was really enjoying the comic. Art: Ed Piskor is an underground comic artist and it shows. For fans of classic superhero art, the art may be offputting, but I'm loving it. Grade:8/10 (note it's pretty expensive at $5.99, so give it a look before you buy it. It's 46 pages though, so per page it's not more expensive than regular comics).

I'll definitely be getting #2. I really liked Piskor's art style. It kind of reminds me of the Super Powers back-ups that Tom Scioli did for Cave Carson.

Marvel Two in One #1. Written by Chip Zdarsky. Art and Cover by Jim Cheung. The Return of the Fantastic Four starts here? This title reunites The Thing & The Human Torch. It appears they will go looking for their presumed missing (or deceased) team members (the Richards family). Somehow Doom fits into this also. Zdarsky gets us up to speed quickly & reunites Johnny & Ben. Good first issue. Good dynamics between the two main characters. He grabbed my attention right away. Cheung's art has changed somewhat. I saw some JR Jr influences in this issue. In a good way. Great job showing Johnny's emotions. Another hit for Marvel with Legacy. 9/10. 10/10 for me Zdarksy delivers a near pitch-perfect blend of drama and nostalgia here as Ben and Johnny reunite. Sue's dialogue and it's insights gave me goosebumps. Cheung's art did have touches of JRjr but since I love Jr anyway, the art was amazing. And thank you, Zdarksy, thank you. In one issue, you've given me more depth and meaning to a confrontation between Victor Von Doom and Ben than Bendis has in his whole Infamous Iron Man run so far.

I've been looking forward to Tales of Suspense #100 for a few months, ever since I saw it announced in promotional material for Marvel Legacy. But in another way, I've been looking forward to Tales of Suspense #100 since about 1980 when I was collecting the old series and had all the issues from about #41 to #99. I wasn't disappointed. Somebody is killing all the regional leaders of Hydra and Hawkeye thinks it's the Black Widow (even though she's supposedly dead). I always try to read at least one Marvel comic series and I'm really liking She-Hulk right now. But it's nice to come across another one I like! I'm thinking of giving the current Daredevil series a try. The solicits for this caught my eye which is why I gave it a shot. Even though I haven't read any of the main Secret Empire event, I didn't have a problem in picking up the storyline here with Clint believing that Natasha may still be alive somehow and targeting former Hydra leaders. Travel Foreman's art fits well here with this type of spy/action genre, evoking feelings of Lark and Maleev along the way. My only caveat is Bucky's page time was significantly less than Clint's. I'm not all that keen on this version of Hawkeye (prompted by Fraction's success in his solo title I gather) and frankly, I''m more interested in Bucky so I was slightly disappointed in this. Still, if Rosenberg can focus on their similarities and differences in their respective relationships with Natasha as both seek to find the truth about her status (which he does do to some degree here), then I think this may turn out to be a fun action story. 8/10

Aquaman #31. Written by Dan Abnett. Art by Riccardo Federici. Cover by Stjepan Sejic. This issue felt like it was "treading water" (pun intended). Aquaman (with the aid of others) is urged to take back the throne from Rath. Aquaman wants Rath gone but he doesn't want the throne. The art was good. It had a Doug Brathwaite quality to it. While it was good it wasn't the lush gorgeous art that we have seen from Sejic. Hopefully Sejic will be back after this arc. 7/10. Just read this last night. Completely agree with your assessment about it being just OK. As the first issue of a multi-part story, it sets some things up, all of which are tied back into the King Rath storyline, which has been nothing special thus far. Sure, it reintroduced Dolphin into the mythos and gave Mera something to do other than be eye candy and Aquaman's backup in a fight, but Rath is so underdeveloped as a character, that it's not like I even hate him, which is what you want from a main villain. I'm sticking with it, because the overall quality of the book has been high since the beginning of nu52 (excepting the Bunn issues, which were garbage), but I hope Rath gets deposed soon and it finds a new direction for Arthur, either as king, consort to Queen Mera, or something else entirely.
