Oopsie, looks like someone at Tribune goofed and forgot to check for pre-existing licensing delas for Dick Tracy in comic form because this got cancelled and pulled form Archie due to a licensing error on Tribune's part. -M That's a pretty strange turn of events, you'd think with them so far along rights issues would have been discovered long ago.

The story (as best as I can tell from the BC story) is the writer contacted Tribune to ask about doing Tracy in comics and expected to be told no. Tribune was excited to get Tracy back into comics, moved ahead with the deal and forgot to check to see if there was a non-expired license for comics still in effect and it turns out, there was. No mention who holds the license, it might not even be an American publisher, but the deal is still in place for the american market so until it expires, no go. -M

It probably took the rights holder filing a complaint for anyone to notice, and if it is a publisher that doesn't follow the comic newssites (maybe a book publisher not a comic publisher) it could have taken a while before someone at the company noticed and filed the complaint with Tribune. Tribune certainly didn't do their due diligence and were content to get the revenue from Archie it seems, so nothing was noticed/done until someone complained is the most likely scenario. -M

Well looks like the Archie is dead and IDW is the one bringing a Dick Tracy comic to the stands. They just announced it today... from the CBR article: -M

Now this could be fun. Much more attractive than the Archie version. Definitely worth checking out.

I was shocked at how horrible the Archie one looked. They were making the mistake of tossing aside the uniquely grotesque villains and stylized artistic aspects that were so special in Tracy which helps it to stand out among the crowd. Tracy does NOT need to be updated stylistically to a mainstream or natural/realistic police look for it to sell. Tracy just needs to have a consistent monthly comic book presence the same as Tarzan, Flash Gordon, The Phantom, The Shadow, Doc Savage and others in order to get him back into the public consciousness. I think some of what Archie has been doing lately is good but their corporate leaders are much more worried about dollars over quality and are like many business leaders far removed and emotionally detached/disconnected from the product they sell. Outside of the main new Archie monthly and their digest's which continue to reprint and include in the classic style everything Archie puts out now is either delayed, cut short or starts with a bang only to drop off quickly.

This is right in Allred's wheelhouse.
Looking forward to it.
Yeah, dumbing down the bizarre-ness of the villains would be extremely unappealing.
