I'm pretty sure my first treasury book was Captain America's Bicentennial Battles, purchased from a drugstore's magazine aisle; I'm not entirely sure because also in 1976 I got the second Origins of Super-Viillains treasury and a Batman treasury, which had this cover: Those two books stick in my memory more, because they were purchased for me by mom (after much begging and pleading) based on a house ad in a comic book; I still remember when they came in a big brown cardboard mailer, which is where I kept them stored (and took to school to show off to my friends). The house ads for the Superman vs. Spider-man book so captivated me at the time, but it never appeared anywhere I bought comics at the time. I have loved that painting of Batman (Wally Fax's brush over the classic Infantino licensing art created in 1966) from the moment I laid eyes on it in the 70s. Its such a striking, powerful image of the character, and required no action pose or fight. Is just him in that confident, serious pose.

My first Treasury Edition was the first Treasury Edition. I also got all the DC vs Marvel ones.
This is my favourite Spidey cover of all time.

For $44,000 the original could have been yours.

Arguably Romita at the height of his talent, and undoubtedly the era featuring the best Spider-Man would ever look.

Romita will always be my definitive Spidey artist. When I was small I didn't like the artwork in the McFarlane books of the time (early 90s) and used to read the back-issues instead.

The discovery of Treasury editions as a kid was magic for me too, it was like the "ultimate experience". This was my first one when I was small, and it actually introduced me to the Avengers. I used to have that one, and last year I re-acquired it on ebay.

So much great comic book goodness!

My guess is Giaccioa, but I'll check.
Checked, its Giaccioa.

I have an interesting Marvel Treasury story. I told my wife I had been dreaming about a memory I had of looking through a friend's Marvel Treasury Holiday Special in the 70's in school. I remember it had the Avengers having a snowball fight in the snow. I had the dream several times and was sort of obsessing about it. So, for Christmas (about 10 years ago), she went online to find the thing and buy it for me. She landed at Mile High Comics, and called them and the employee there was very friendly and cut her a great deal (less than $20) and shipped it out. When it arrived it was the Spiderman one pictured above. She called and told them it was the wrong one. "Well, keep that one, and I'll send the right one". So they sent THOR. "Keep that one, too... I've got the right one now." Still wrong. So, after about 3 months of this, they finally sent ALL of the holiday ones, along with a treasure trove of Near Mint Treasury editions... at no extra cost. There were 10 altogether, but I can only include the above 4 images, aparently.

I'll share a little remembrance I have of when Dark Knight Returns came out in '86. At the time, I was attending the same high school in Vermont Frank Miller had gone to. While it had been a number of years since he'd graduated, his old art teacher was still there. Evidently Frank was still grateful to him, and sent him a bunch of cool autographed Dark Knight stuff (the teacher brought them to school knowing a bunch of us were fans and would enjoy as well).
Looking back, knowing Frank has had his share of controversy over the years, I will say I thought that was a cool thing to do back then. As an aside, that art teacher was also my art teacher...so while I can't lay claim to a smidge of illustration success like Mr. Miller, I can at least say we had the same teacher!
Another little Vermont memory was Steve Bissette being a local, and while he was getting a lot of attention with being part of Moore's run on Swamp Thing, he was always a cool down to earth guy at the little local conventions and fun to talk to.

Since you're from Vermont, ever been to the Rutland Halloween Parade? I imagine you wouldn't have had an opportunity to meet Tom Fagan.

Despite only living a little over an hour from there, I never did get to go! I think we always ended up having other family plans that conflicted. But every time I read a comic book referencing it, I always have some regret I didn't make it there back in the day.
