Two Canadian news channels showed the big ISS link-up and Saint-Jacques coming through the airlock live. I think CNN had nothing but Bush Sr.'s funeral for hours in contrast; past vs. future?

I don't know, I think it has more to do with Americans having so many astronauts to cheer for! We Canucks can still manage to know most of ours by name! Fun and pathetic fact: I did apply for the job back in the early '90s, when the CSA was looking for new candidates. My résumé was apparently not even worth a "no thank you" note!!!

NASA's New Horizons probe has sent back the best pictures yet of the Kuiper Belt object known as Ultima Thule. Very cool pic. Apparently more and possibly better ones are coming but the distance and the slow rate of transmission may make that take significant time.

The term always pops up when we deal with space, but it’s truly warranted in a case like this: this simulated trip at light speed from the sun to Jupiter, in real time, is nothing less than awe-inspiring.
My God... Space is HUGE!!!

Space X's new Dragon Crewpod has officially completed it's first docking with the ISS today! It wasn't manned but it did contain a high tech test dummy that will record data to see if the capsule could safely transport humans in the near future.
There's a slight negative to it though as our President decided to claim it as some personal victory for himself, but that's a topic for another thread.

I’m all for international collaboration, but to systematically depend on Russia to send people to the ISS was getting a little embarrassing! The news about the Gateway station in orbit around the moon is also pretty uplifting!

I'm not sure I see the rationale behind the Gateway project. Why a satellite around the moon rather than returning to the moon itself?

My guess would be that it's less expensive (in fuel) to keep something in orbit than to touch down and fly up again, so as a first step it might make sense to have an orbiting station. (I hope, of course, that it is only a first step and that we'll be building Moonbase Alpha in the following decades! )

Very interesting, but also deeply depressing!
Spoiler alert: entropy wins in the end.

This deserves to be seen by every green activist who prefers slogans to hard facts.
Not that I have anything against environmental concerns; I'm a biologist, after all. But if we want to preserve the environment, we have to rely on facts, not on slogans.
Nuclear energy should seriously be considered as one of our options to wean ourselves from burning fossil fuels.

We're all well aware of this, I know, but it bears repeating: a bunch of really smart humans successfully took a picture of a black hole. Science!
