I have no idea how anybody deals with me. Speaking of cokes and comics. I can remember when I could go to the local convenience store and buy TWO Marvel comics and a coke in the tall glass bottle for one pound. Damn, those were the days.

...blue (& gray) Batman is the s***! Can't give you much advice on dealing with that type of comic-book-fan vitriol in real life, Willow, as I pretty much never encounter it where I currently live (outside the US); it's much easier to deal with online, as I just avoid message boards or comment threads on comic-book related sites where all the opinionated hotheads hang out. You know normally I live in the UK but have lived in California for a few years now. I hope it's not this bad back home. And yes blue and gray Batman is da bomb.

Hmm, should've noted that I'm not just abroad, but also in a non-English speaking country. The geek crowd is a bit different here...
Anyway [putting on old coot hat, chewing on toothpick], 2 comic books and Coke for a pound? Why, back when I started reading comics they were 25 cents each, so I'm pretty sure you could've bought 3 comics and a bottle of Coke for a buck (or 3 comics and a not insignificant amount of candy). I'm not entirely sure, though, 'cause back in the day, when I actually had a whole dollar to spend, you can be sure it was used to get 4 comic books...

There are really people committing actual crimes (threats of bodily harm) over comics?
Darn, I'm starting to understand the old cranky guys who used to say "them $#@ youngsters; what they'd need is a good war".

Darn, I'm starting to understand the old cranky guys who used to say "them $#@ youngsters; what they'd need is a good war". I have seen this once a year ago at my LCS when two guys are arguing over a comic book that they wanted to buy and the owner of the store kicked them out and banning them as well and pressed charges of assault and battery of which four customers standing in line witnessed it. I was in the back end of the store looking through old boxes of old comics and see if I can find JLA #32 as a replacement copy for my collection and proceed from there. I found it and by time I was ready to pay the police already was there and arrested the two guys over a comic book. Got this book and I was told to wait another 15 minutes by the Police to make sure that the situation is well in hand and I can go home with this book in good order. It's crazy out there and I heard other stories as well in Vancouver B.C., Portland Oregon, and other places too.

There are really people committing actual crimes (threats of bodily harm) over comics? Darn, I'm starting to understand the old cranky guys who used to say "them $#@ youngsters; what they'd need is a good war". Well it's a good thing the military is equal opportunity when it comes to gender. Cause if my wife's stories of the fandom of Supernatural are any indication there's a bunch of unhinged middle aged gals out there that haven't got a firm grasp on reality. The stories she tells me of these female fans harassing the actor's of the show wives for their inability to separate the fictional character from the actor, have gotten to a point where they had to assign bodyguards to these men. Bizarre and incestuous shipping or real people associated with their fictional partners. Calling their wive's "beards" to try and fulfill their fantasies. It's insanity. Truly. And as always with any hobby/fandom that's not indicative of even a majority of the members. But it is a indication, to me, that I can see in my lifetime, that many in society seem to becoming overwhelmed with their fiction and the blurring of it into reality. I remember how much my parents made that point about fiction and reality. Even when I started playing video games on the NES. And it was a very firm point I made with my boys when they started playing video games, and getting into their own entertainment. Some people can't seem to just enjoy something and move on. This maybe the internet again. And how easy it is to be in contact with these actors/actresses/writers/creators with social media. Maybe social media has done more damage than good. People always feeling obligated to make updates and post more and more about their personal lives for their starving fans. I dunno, maybe I am being pessimistic. Maybe I just don't have any desire to care what the real people do behind the fictional characters they represent that entertain me. But it seems an alarming observation on my part. One that my wife and I actively work against with my boys, who were born in the age or internet and social media and have never lived without it in their presence.
