I don't know if this has been done or not, but I was thinking of the best year in various entertainment fields. I also tried to think of the best overall year, but that's even tougher.
Best year for comics: 1977 (notable events: Gulacy Master of Kung Fu; Claremont/Byrne X-Men; Bride of Ultron plus some Perez & Byrne art in Avengers; Levitz Legion of Super-Heroes; Aquaman Death of a Prince; existence of Treasury Sized comics and Digest Sized comics; Englehart JLA; Batman Family; The Eternals; The Corporation storyline in Marvel; Black Lightning)
I think that 1975-1982 is the best stretch, and those are all fantastic years, but I guess I'l go with 1977 as my personal choice, though 1979 is a VERY close second!
Best Year for music: 1984 (I'm a big fan of New Wave so it was a great year there with solid releases by The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, U2, Duran Duran, Talk Talk, Alphaville, and Ultravox to name a few, but in addition to New Wave, there was more mainstream hits such as Purple Rain, Born in the USA, the Footloose soundtrack, and Van Halen's 1984)
I thnk that 1977-1988 are all very good, but especially 1982-1984. It was very tough for me to choose between those two years - 1982 and 1984.
Best year for TV: 1986-87 season (highlights include The Cosby Show; Family Ties; Cheers; Newhart; Moonlighting; Growing Pains; Night Court; 60 Minutes; Fraggle Rock, Miami Vice; Alf; The Golden Girls, Matlock, Kate & Allie; My Sister Sam; ; Murder. She Wrote; Hunter)
I think that 1985-1995 is a very good stretch, and 2009-2011 is another excellent stretch, plus 1973-78 and 2001-02 were pretty good stretches too. This is a tough one for me to decide, as I'm sure I've overlooked some shows I enjoyed back in the day but haven't seen in a long time.
Best year for movies: 2003 (highlights include Lord of the Rings: Return of the King; X2, Old School; Pirate of the Carribean; Seabiscuit; Ong-Bak, the Thai Warrior; Kill bill vol. 1; Love Actually; Underworld; Elf; The Last Samurai)
This was probably the toughest one for me to decide. No one year really jumped out at me, and it was very close between 1999, 2002, 2003, and 2004. If I wanted to go nostalgic, then I could have gone with 1981, 1982 or maybe 1986, or a couple of other years from the 80's. In fairness, I've hardly seen any new movies since my son was born nearly 6 years ago, having only seen the three Hobbit movies, the Star Wars movies, the first JJ Abrams Star Trek movie, both Avengers movies, the first two Captain America movies, plus probably a couple of others I'm overlooking at the moment.
Best year for cartoons: 1981 or 1982 (highlights include Thundarr, the Barbarian; Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends; Super Friends; Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle; Space Stars [Space Ghost, et. al.]; Schoolhouse Rock; Scooby-Doo; Battle of the Planets; the Smurfs for both years)
1980-1984 were all great years. Plus, Star Blazer aired in the USA from 1979-1980.
Best year for comic strips: 1985 or 1989 (1985 highlights- Prince Valiant, Peanuts, Wizard of Id; Heathcliff; Herman; Shoe; Spider-Man; Garfield; Bloom County; Far Side; Mother Goose and Grimm; Calvin & Hobbes. 1989 highlights are the same, except remove Star Wars and 5 months of Bloom County and replace them with 4 months of Outland and 8 months of Dilbert. Plus Calvin & Hobbes was only around the last 2 months of 1985 compared with all of 1989)
1985-89 is the best stretch of years, though 1985-1995 is all good.
Best year for toys: 1977-80 I know, that's a cop-out. Toys being sold then: Star Wars (duh!); Mego superheroes; Micronauts; Shogun Warriors
1984 looks like a good year, too, with He-Man, GI Joe, Transformers; DC Super Powers, and Marvel Secret Wars.
I didn't do a "Best year for novels" because most of the novel I read are from the 1800's, and I didn't do a "best year for video games" because I'm not into video games all that much though I certainly did play them back in the 80's and also the 90's. Still, that doesn't hold much interest for me at that point.
A far as best overall year for everything, I could go with anything in the 1980-1987 or maybe 1979-1988 range. Maybe 1986? That's definitely not the best year for comics, though I think it's a decent year for comics.
