urgh i bought that album when it came out and hated it - his lyrics for Elevators were peerless but this was just upsetting and disturbing to hear for me. Well I'm a huge horror fan so it's great to me, heheh. Once you get past the 13th Floor Elevators a huge chunk of his material is horror related. You might enjoy "Don't Slander Me" more, as I remember there are only 2 or 3 horror numbers on it. all i can think of when i listen to it is - wooooahh just what did happen in that psychiatric hospital - coming down off three years of daily lsd use, then electroshock therapy - then you come back with all these disturbing imagery. to me it sounds like something really really bad happened to him in there as none of this imagery was in his work before the hospital.

Fans of Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson might be interested in Graham Parker & the Rumour. One of my favorite songs from his 1979 album Squeezing Out Sparks.
I also recommend their third album from 1977 Stick to Me.

Those Graham Parker LPs were definitely two of my favorites back in the day.

Well he always claimed that he was a lifelong horror fan, and that he sees monsters/aliens etc. as "friends" and that he doesn't consider them to be scary. I'm sure his drug use and hospital stays didn't do him any favors. For me The Evil One is a masterpiece, but I can certainly understand that it's not for everybody. You might like stuff like this a bit more?

During, what I thought were leaner times in new quality rock between 1975-1977,Graham Parker was on the same level as Springsteen,at least to my ears. Again Dan,I always shake my head at your early Joe Jackson aversion.Ah well viva le differance

At least it's better than Steppin Out/Breaking Us In Two Joe Jackson. Like Ish said, Viva la Difference.

Steppin' Out is so colossally godawful that I suspect it poisoned Jackson's entire oeuvre for me.

HOLY. GOD. PARTICLES!!! I LOVE me some Captain Beyond. Very grossly underappreciated outfit IMO, and one of my proudest mid-teenage year discoveries. Such a lowdown dirty shame that they had the personnel problems they had and never could get a thoroughly regular lineup going...BUT, that honestly makes their music all that much more remarkable. IMO, their first album was their best, with "Dancing Madly Backwards/Armworth/Myopic Void" being one of the GREATEST prog and general rock openings AND suites ever. But the other two albums, Sufficiently Breathless and Dawn Explosion are pretty downright worthy themselves. As a matter of fact, I've been uber-addicted to the former's title-track lately and over the last week or two... Ah, nice! Glad to find some folks who appreciate CB. Yeah, that self-titled album is ferocious. I love Dancing Madly Backwards, Raging River of Fear, and the way it ends..Can't Feel Nothin' Part 2...just blistering. I always have to play that last one at least twice. Sufficiently Breathless and Dawn Explosion definitely have some good stuff, too, but neither quite reaches the heights of the debut. Captain Beyond and Sufficiently Breathless was a huge favorite of mine as well. I included them in my write-ups a few pages back. Always great to hear from Captain Beyond fans So you did! My apologies for skimming too quickly. I have been meaning to review the list in more detail as time permits. Though I prefer Ian Gillan in Deep Purple, there's no question that Rod Evans is a strong, talented vocalist. I'd never heard either of these but, having just added them to my iTunes, I'll be hearing them frequently. Great stuff. Definitely do. Captain Beyond is a solid group, and there is some interesting stuff on that first album. One of the coolest things is that musically it has some really out there stuff for the time... all kinds of odd time signatures, jazzy chords and bits, but it has the feel of a regular rock album. You don't really notice the time signatures. It's cool stuff.

Graham Parker is almost unknown these days despite glowing reviews in Rolling Stone back in the early 80s. Christgau eeven found him, gulp, sincere. I don't think I've listened to Squeezing Out Sparks in over a decade.

Believe it or not, in 1970 there was a band called Suck. And they rocked the house.

Suck. Thats hysterical. I'm pretty good in recognizing 70s bands and I've never heard of them.I'll give a listen and hope they don't
