Okay, I know this is a general music thread, but I'd like to post something that plays into both "classics" and "underground." Has anyone here ever heard of the cult 70s prog rock band Captain Beyond? They were a supergroup of sorts, comprised of Larry "Rhino" Renhardt and Lee Dorman of Iron Butterfly, Rod Evans of Deep Purple, and Bobby Caldwell of Johnny Winter And. They likely would have been huge if not poorly managed, and while they're not a household name, they have a huge cult following and are well known among musicians. Jimmy Chamberlain of the Smashing Pumpkins and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters have cited the band as an influence to name a few. Anyway, their self-titled debut is AMAZING. It's a blend of blistering rock, psychedelia and some jazz time signatures, chords and arrangements. If you have any remote interest in 70s rock, give its listen and let me know what you think. As it happens, I'm good friends with Bobby Caldwell, and I have to say he is a swell guy. HOLY. GOD. PARTICLES!!! I LOVE me some Captain Beyond. Very grossly underappreciated outfit IMO, and one of my proudest mid-teenage year discoveries. Such a lowdown dirty shame that they had the personnel problems they had and never could get a thoroughly regular lineup going...BUT, that honestly makes their music all that much more remarkable. IMO, their first album was their best, with "Dancing Madly Backwards/Armworth/Myopic Void" being one of the GREATEST prog and general rock openings AND suites ever. But the other two albums, Sufficiently Breathless and Dawn Explosion are pretty downright worthy themselves. As a matter of fact, I've been uber-addicted to the former's title-track lately and over the last week or two...

Captain Beyond and Sufficiently Breathless was a huge favorite of mine as well. I included them in my write-ups a few pages back. Always great to hear from Captain Beyond fans

Though I prefer Ian Gillan in Deep Purple, there's no question that Rod Evans is a strong, talented vocalist. I'd never heard either of these but, having just added them to my iTunes, I'll be hearing them frequently. Great stuff.

I've been listening to a lot of Roky Erickson and Billy Childish lately. I bought the reissue of Roky Erickson & the Aliens Evil One a couple months ago. One of my all time favorites from him. He released a new record called True Love Cast Out All Evil a few years ago with a band called Okkervil River. You can listen to most of it on youtube.

One of my favorite 'so, SO weird, it's awesome' covers is of a Roky Erickson song..."You Don't Love Me Yet", as performed by Bongwater, The Fabulous Pussywillows, Bob Weir, and with a special guest appearance by Screamin' Jay Hawkins(!!)...as performed on Night Music.

Great to see some Roky love from Art School Drop Out and Miss Fantastic. I haven't heard his last album yet. I have the Evil One plus One double vinyl release and listen to it all the time.

Because this thread needs more Frank Black. Here's one with my home town in the title and a nice slide of some local sights.
Another song and my favorite from the same album Fast Man Raider Man ↓

Glad you enjoyed that Phil. Try this on for size -- A British Prog band called Gravy Train. This is their 1974 album titled "Staircase to the Day". Yeah, you've definitely scored a direct hit with me. 70s British Prog and Glam rock are just about my absolute favorite genres. Great to hear. Yeah I've been discovering all kinds of good stuff during various vinyl digs, been collecting for a few years now. Captain Beyond! I was going to post that first album actually...wow that is awesome you guys enjoy them also. I bought that first LP having no idea what they sounded like. It's a real thrill when you put a record on, not knowing what to expect...and then it just blows you away. Then I found out later on the guys were members of Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly. Here are two more records, some of my favorites. Nektar - Sounds Like This (1973): More British Prog, though a bit more melodic and the guitars tear it up. Fields - Fields (1971): Psychadelic prog by Ex-King Diamond Andrew McCulloch. They only released this one album, but it is a fantastic one.

Well I'm a huge horror fan so it's great to me, heheh. Once you get past the 13th Floor Elevators a huge chunk of his material is horror related. You might enjoy "Don't Slander Me" more, as I remember there are only 2 or 3 horror numbers on it.

Well I'm a huge horror fan so it's great to me, heheh. Same here all the horror movie references are why I picked up the album. I mean references to Creature with the Atom Brain, Night of the Vampire and I Walked with a Zombie. Doesn't get much better than that.

Notable omissions -- Strangely enough the Cramps always denied being a horror band despite all of their horror related songs. Exploitation band? Definitely a stellar band. I keep wondering if Poison Ivy will ever try and start up something new. Shame that since Lux's death she hasn't done anything. I like a few of Alien Sex Fiend's songs but I never fully warmed up to them. Some other horror-ish bands I enjoy: Tallboys, The Damned , Jet Black Berries, Samhain and 45 Grave. To name a few anyway!
