Nobody has picked the swirling time vortex of the Doctor Who opening title sequence? Heathens! Okay, it might not be that exciting but that theme gives me goosebumps every time. Yeah, if we were purely talking about excellent theme tunes, Dr. Who would be an obvious choice -- as would the 60's Spider-Man cartoon. But I think that as a TV series intro, the swirling vortex on Doctor Who is fairly average. I mean, it's certainly a striking image, but I'm not sure how well it really works as a quick introduction to what you're about to watch for those who are new to the show. To me, a good TV intro should give you some hint about what you'll be watching and give something of a series premise. It doesn't even need a voice over to do that, but it has to give us something. I mean, if you didn't know any better, this intro could be for a horror show, starring a creepy police surgeon known as Doctor Who...

Ah the days of childhood when that was the Lone Ranger theme before there was ever a William Tell Overture.

Although I can't say that I know even a quarter of the shows that brutalis lists above, I'm glad to see Miami Vice get a mention. I'm a big fan of this show (I have all five seasons on DVD) and Jan Hammer's intro music is fast paced and exciting. I'm not sure the visuals, exotic and sexy though they are, really convey what the show's about, but it's a great intro anyway...

Hill Street Blues I can't recall but might recognise it if I heard it. Other than that...nah, I'm not familiar with any of these.

The ITV shows, from the UK usually had great ones, as already mentioned with The Avengers and The Prisoner. Here are a few other good ones:
Department S (a crime/spy series)
Spin-off Jason King
The US intro for The Secret Agent (Danger Man, in the UK)
The Saint
The Hew Avengers
The Professionals (or CI5: The Professionals, if you prefer)
and The Bishop
Okay, that last one is a Monty Python parody.

Battlestar Galactica the original. That theme music is a powerful earworm. I've had it in the noggin for forty years!!!

Mighty Hercules Opening & Closing
Hercules, hero of song and story. Hercules, winner of ancient glory. Fighting for the right, Fighting with his might, With the strength of ten ordinary men. Hercules, people are safe when near him. Hercules, only the evil fears him. Softness in his eyes, Iron in his thighs, Virtue in his heart, Fire in every part, Of the Mighty Hercules.
Join us at his side, Standing there with pride, Victory is here, Raise a mighty cheer, At the sight of Hercules

Mighty Hercules Opening & Closing Great choice! That's another theme song that really stuck. And speaking of which...

The Professionals (or CI5: The Professionals, if you prefer) ...and we have a winner! Awesome intro and a great, great theme tune (it's the cool as f**k wah-wah guitar that really makes it).
