Have you gone to Wildwood when yuo're down there? Highly recommended. Fun for all ages. That's actually exactly where we go. Wildwood Crest. Family tradition. Been going since I was in utero Retro-Heaven on Earth!

Shax, Since you are from Cleveland ...
You could visit Chicago (to see the Cubs play), visit Kansas CIty (for their barbeques), visit Hocking Hills Ohio (I spent a week there in 1976 and 1994), Minneapolis (World's Largest Mall, you can spend two days there), St. Louis (Gateway Arch), Indianapolis (Indy 500, etc), Wisconsin Dells (Great Water Park, there), and many more wonders to see.
Most of these places are in the 500-600 miles of driving time (2 days by car) or go by air (night owl flights are generally cheaper), and all that.
I would go to any of these places - but Chicago would be a great destination for it's history, great way to get around, see the Cubs and White Sox play, visit several museums, great camping grounds nearby, and planetarium too.
Minneapolis would be my 2nd choice, to visit the Mall and the mall has the world's largest indoor water park and it is a blast for the kids there and you can easily spend two days there enjoying it.
I can go on and on ... but, seriously the Midwest of USA has great spots to visit and all of them are in a day or two of traveling from Cleveland either by car and or by air.

I lived in New Jersey for 30 years but I've never been to Wildwood. My favorite place in southern NJ is Cape May. IIRC, Todd Klein lives near there. And Tom Orzechowski lives in Cleveland, so you have a great letterer nearby pretty much all the time.
If you're musically inclined, you could go to New Orleans.
Chicago is good for music too.
And Nashville.
Or you could come here to Portland and drink craft beer and cider.

I always found the place beautiful but never knew what to do while there. Any suggestions? We're going back to Wildwood in July. Actually, Tom O lives right outside of Cleveland, only a few blocks from me. Never met him in person though. I want to New Orleans on a high school trip in '97 and adored it. Not sure I'd know how to make a whole trip out of it on my own though. Always thought about going to Chicago, as it's not too far. What's to do there?

Washington Street Mall. For fresh seafood, Lobster House on Fisherman’s Wharf. Cape May’s famous Food & Wine Festival. Wine tasting at Cape May Winery. The free Cape May County Park and Zoo.
I spent my high school summers at the southern Jersey Shore. I lived in Somers Point across the bay from Ocean City.

So, right now, I'm thinking along two different lines.
One trip I'm almost definitely going to take is with my mother to the Shakespeare festival in Stratford Ontario. It's something I've wanted to do for years. We're going to spend two days in Toronto as well. Any recommendations on what to do while there?
I think my other way of thinking is to get to know what's around me a little better. There are extensive natural parks, hiking trails, and camping sites all around me. I think I'd enjoy getting to know them better. I'm not an athletic guy, but I do love the outdoors. I also intend to walk around my city a bit more and get to know the shops and neighborhoods I've overlooked for so many years. There truly is so much around me to see. Once I've done all that, maybe a road trip across America in a rental car (mine is on its last leg). I don't think I'm young enough to pull off sleeping on a mattress in the back of a truck anymore, though. Climate control alone would drive me crazy after a few nights.
So those are my lines of thinking as of now.

Do you like tennis? The Western & Southern Open is being played near Cincinnati the week of August 14. It's a big tournament, so most of the best players (men & women) should be there. I went there a few years ago for the whole tournament (a lot cheaper than U.S. Open tickets). It's the only time I've been in Ohio!

I was in Toronto once, but I can't say anything there stuck me as particularly exciting. I remember thinking it felt alot like Chicago. I know the Hockey Hall of Fame is there, if you're into that.

I like playing tennis (not that I'm good or do it often) but I've never watched a match. Doesn't sound like fun unless I was with an enthusiast. Thanks for this, though!

I second DC! And the Jersey Shore is great, which you already know, I guess. Have you gone to Wildwood when yuo're down there? Highly recommended. Fun for all ages. And I also second wildfire's recommendation of Boston. Let me add to Boston Cape Cod, Western Mass and/or Vermont. Whether you like camping, hiking, swimming, and/or museums, historic places and drop-dead scenery, there's plenty to do and see, and much of New England is driveable in a day. A four-hour drive from Boston takes you to Northern Vermont or NH, deep into Maine or out to the Berkshires. And on your way to New England, drop in to see the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Even if you're not a big baseball fan, the town is a gem. I'm rushing and generalizing. Lots to do and see here! I went to the Baseball Hall of Fame years ago. Even though I'm a baseball fan and I like museums, I was underwhelmed. Maybe I was just not in the right mood. Anyway, since you're coming from Cleveland, shaxper, I'd only recommend it as one destination as part of roadtrip (like Prince Hal's suggestion of a stop on the way to New England). I wouldn't give it main attraction status for a vacation for someone traveling from far away. However, Howe Cavern is less than an hour away, so you could Howe and the HOF together.

Been there twice. True about being similar to Chicago. Hockey Hall of Fame was neat. I remember a few museums. Some shopping areas. And some old castle we walked thru.

Is Toronto the place where they have the shopping stuff underground? Like the subway? it might be (could also be Montreal)

Is Toronto the place where they have the shopping stuff underground? Like the subway? it might be (could also be Montreal) There's an "underground city " in Montreal, but although it's kind of cool I wouldn't go out of my way to see it. It's just funny to use it to go from ome place to the other, sometimes going through office tower lobbies and then back to underground tunnels or subway stations without ever going outside. Mintreal has a lot more to offer, however: the public library is outstanding, with more bandes dessinées, manga and comics than anyone could read in a lifetime. I spent an afternoon there two years ago and was in heaven. The insectarium and botanical gardens are also really cool. Say, Shaxper, have you visited Washington DC? The mall, the Smithsonian, Arlington cemetary, the arboretum, they were really all great. As was the nearby Baltimore aquarium.
