Well...I'll just say as an aspiring artist I love Byrne's work. He has a true inspiration in that regard. However, as a person I haven't heard very many flattering things. Creators have apparently been fed up with him over the years for various reasons. And I don't think I could ever be a member of his message board where he'll ban anyone that may upstage him or prove him wrong about something. That is just childish in my opinion. Also, I remembering hearing Byrne saying or implying something negative about black people in general. And as a black man myself I found that to just be another drop in the bucket for why I don't think I could respect him as a person. Yeah I don't know the man, but at the same time I don't think I'd be inclined to want to know him.

I really liked this Hidden Years title. The only way I can see him ever doing anything for Marvel is if they finally reboot, or something to that effect. I really enjoyed the Hidden Years series, but I think it ran its course. On the subject of his message board, he comes off as a wack-a-doo.

I don't recall Byrne ever saying anything racist against black people. There are actually several black forum members who post regularly. One of his man characters in Next Men is a black woman and his cast on The High Ways and Trio is racially diverse. I'm sure some would see this as a cynical old man trying to appear open-minded and inclusive, but that just strikes me as one of those "can't win for losing" scenario's."
It seems to me that Byrne and his moderator cronies have toned down their stern behavior over the last few years. Though someone mentioned in a thread that they liked Man of Steel (the movie) and he stated "I don't think you're going to like it here." One thing I've learned about Byrne is that he rants against fanboy's and the fan-turned-pro so vehemently because he himself is one of the biggest fanboy's to ever become a professional.

I've never been a huge fan of Byrne, but in the late 70s-early 80s, when he was firing on all cylinders, nobody better at mainstream superhero comics (which doesn't mean that there weren't people just as good). And it didn't take long after he left for X-Men to become unreadable.
But, like a lot of things in comics, it's hard to make lightning strike twice. Nothing Byrne ever did interested me as much (though I didn't read his FF). I liked She-Hulk when it started, but while it was fun when he broke the fourth wall a couple times in the early issues, soon he was doing it on every single page.
In retrospect, it probably made good sense at the time for DC to hand him Superman, but it was probably a mistake to hand the flagship character to a single creator to redo. At some point, he was going to leave, and it was going to look bad for Byrne or DC or both.
Also, the near-identical sequences in She Hulk and World of Metropolis with the villains watching videos of She-Hulk and Lois Lane getting tortured turned me off of him. (Either one worldn't have been bad, but to do it twice....)

Well...Byrne put me on ignore! Another longtime member recently got the same treatment (also a ten year vet). The topic at hand was the recent Kirby settlement. I probably came close on this subject several times in the past, but I really can't get behind someone who thinks it's a virtue to proudly proclaim their "cog status." I love the man's work, but he simply never developed the ability to get into a rational debate with someone with an opposing view. I'm also wondering if he might be getting a little...senile? He recently refused to finish a commission on the grounds that he just couldn't get past his dislike for The Green Goblin; he never got over the fact that he usurped Doc Ock as Spider-Man's top villain. Who does that? Byrne, that's' who!

Congratulations on that dubious distinction, Trebor. Really should be seen as a badge of honor coming from one of the fields' true nutjobs (albeit a rather benign one, of course, when compared to the foaming-mouthed likes of Frank Miller, etc.).

Yeah, from a pure fan perspective, it's sad to see him at the point where his comics don't sell and the only project he has is a Star Trek photo novel. Photo novel's just aren't my thing, man.
Of course at the other end of the spectrum I'm following Walt Simonson on facebook and enjoying his new Ragnarok series. Talk about night and day personality wise.

Whatever you do, don't mention that the Earl of Oxford didn't write Shakespeare's plays!

2. He's a huge fan of the Dixie Chicks. (I never commented on this, but this was the only thing I've read on the Byrne Forum that made me strongly consider self-deletion.) Nothing at all wrong with those guys. "Goodbye Earl," in particular, is a great single. And of course the fact that, unlike any number of other popular artists (especially in their genre), they were willing to rear up on their hind legs & express revulsion & shame at the thuggish, wet-brained moron then illegally occupying the White House is one helluva point in their favor. Now THIS is my kind of political post! ;-)

"Hey, Trevor, 'round here we're trying to encourage the use of @ to indicate sarcasm. Hope that wasn't your intent!"
I got out just in time! (Yes, that's an actual quote from Byrne...)

How is @ used to indicate sarcasm?

I think, in Byrne's case, it's actually used to indicated ... ummm ... a word that starts with "a-," has a couple of repeated letters, & then ends with "-hole."
At some point, they're going to haul him off to the Home for Clueless Curmudgeons, aren't they?

Besides, everyone knows that @ is internet shorthand for the circled A of anarchism, which of course actually means "anarchy is order" (per Proudhon).
