Star Lord #4: Another fast paced and fun issue. Peter learns that the elderly man he's been assigned to for community service has a past with Daredevil. The man's brother had worked on and improved some alien technology that AIM wanted. The technology has been with Peter's charge (unknown to AIM and just about everyone else) and is still in demand, now by the Black Cat. There are some funny scenes with the Shocker and Peter. They team up to find the missing Diamondback (who is being held captive by Black Cat). One minor thing: The guy in the nursing home is referenced as meeting Daredevil early in his career. My question is how can this man now be in his 70s having encountered a young Daredevil and Daredevil is still in his late 20s/early 30s? A very minor thing, but it kind of jumped out at me. There are plenty of beefcake moments of Peter towards the end of the book and it seems to be an inside joke about Peter constantly losing his shirt. The art is very clean and has an animated look. One thing I read comics for is fun and escapism. This book certainly provides that escape and fun for me. 9/10

Superman #19: my thoughts.....this is a great Superman story about him and his family. After we learn the true identity of the fake Clark Kent and his motivations, Superman's future and family are threatened and that is something he is not going to give up. The artist had a field day depicting a twisted Candy Land/Game of Life mash up. The colors are bright. I am looking forward to the finale and explanations of how this all ties in with the new 52 Superman and Lois as well as pre 52 Superman and Lois. 8/10

American Gods #1 Story by Neil Gaiman Script and Art by P. Craig Russell Summary: As a convict named Shadow reaches the end of his sentence for armed robbery he thinks his life is just about to turn itself around when all of a sudden everything goes pear shaped: no job, no wife and a persistent stranger with a sketchy job offer.
Plot: I've long been a fan of Neil Gaiman and among his works American Gods is definitely one of my favorites and so the last few years have been a serious boon for me as the tale finally makes its way to the screen and to life. However, in all the excitement of the up coming tv show i some how entirely missed that it was also going to be made into a comic by long time Gaiman collaborator and top notch fantasy artist and writer P. Craig Russell until just last week. Seeing the cover made be break out into a huge grin, and it didn't fade after the reading either. Russell's terse, bare bones narration really gives the whole introduction of Shadow feel like a perfect bit of noir. Not much is said but there is a sense that just permeates itself through every page and into you. It's a fantastic feeling that totally immerses you into the world.
Art: Better men than I have praised Russell's past work so there isn't much to say about how beautiful his art is, but even for a long time fan there was one scene that absolutely blew me away: the first meeting with Bilquis. It's eroticism was slow to build and sensually soft but what what really made it more than just a sex scene was the fantastic imagry; the subtly phallic spiritual rise of the john was one of the best artistic representations of an orgasm seen on page and it fit perfectly with the mysticism surrounding Bilquis. Grade:10/10

Batwoman #1Written by Marguerite Bennet Art by Steve Epting Summary: Tasked with tracking down the person selling the monstermen serum on the black market Batwoman finds instead a face from her past.
Plot: I wasn't completely sold on the Rebirth issue given that most of it was a just a drab rehash of Gregg Rucka's original origin story from Elegy with a little bit of last fall's dreadful Night of the Monstermen story tacked on, but I felt that Bennet got Kate's voice right so I figured I'd give it a go. It's still sticking with the Monstermen plot but under Bennet's pen it feels right in Batwoman's wheel house as she tracks down a drug that makes men into monsters while tying into her own dark past. Along with the trappings of the plot the supporting cast of Alfred's daughter really rounded the book into a solid read.
Art: Epting's art is crisp and the action is clear but the best parts are the moments of calm, the way he lets moments breath and build on their own. This could have easily felt like a run away train full of senseless action but the pacing made it compelling.
Grade:8/10

Star Trek: Deviations Written by Danny Cates Art by Josh Hood Summary: In an alternate universe where the Romulans are the species that makes first contact the world of Gene Roddenberry is a vastly different place.
Plot: It's an interesting concept; what if the Romulans had made first contact rather than the Vulcans....but it never really gives you a sense of what that world would be like or why instead only giving us a drawn action scene with Will Riker playing Snake Pliskin trying to free Picard. I like the Next Gen a whole lot, but abandoning the concept of Earth in the Romulan Empire instead of forming the Federation in favor of weird action story made little sense to me. We never get why these people came together, why Picard is important or why the original Enterprise exists and because its just a weird one shot we'll never find out. So although the thought behind it was interesting there is no follow up, and without a real beginning or end it makes for a strange read.
Art: Hood has a good handle on action and his designs of the Next Gen crew as members of Escape from New York were certainly entertaining.
Grade:5/10

Best Of The Week:Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Art and Cover by Jorge Jimenez. Damian uses Jon to distract Lex while he breaks into Lex Corp. Robin obtains the information he is looking for from Lex's computers. They escape from Lex. Damian explains to Jon they are looking for a kid named Reggie Meyer who still has powers from the Amazo virus Lex released last year. They discover the Meyer family in a reinforced house. All are dead but one...who is missing. While Damian looks around inside the home Jon finds a girl outside in the woods. Just. Freaking. Great. Tomasi nails the different personalities of Jon & Damian. Jon the one that tries to do everything right & please his parents. Damian who wants to impress his Dad but on his terms. They are believable as pre teens IF they had super powers. And Jimenez does something a lot of modern artist can't do. He draws them as kids. Not little adults. Kids. This comic is great fun. 10/10. I agree wholeheartedly, this was a really fun adventure and I love the art.

I was very busy today and never made it to the comic shop. Only three of my books came out today, Batman, Kong of Skull Island and Cave Carson. You'll have to wait to find out what I think of the latest chapter of "I Am Bane." I hope Kong's been good, I went and saw Skull island last night and I'm looking for more giant ape action.

And my vote for next week's cover choice goes to Brian Wood's Rebels and These Free and Independent States #1

You'll have to wait to find out what I think of the latest chapter of "I Am Bane." I hope Kong's been good, I went and saw Skull island last night and I'm looking for more giant ape action. I loved the Kong Skull Island movie! A great popcorn movie! My feeling about the comic book are rather mixed. It takes place at a much earlier time period than any of the movies. The Pacific Islanders (who tamed and bred the giant apes on another island) have come to Skull Island, a rather unpleasant site inhabited by ferocious dinosaurs. (Their original home island was destroyed by an earthquake.) The giant apes offer some protection, but they are huddled in one corner of the island trying to survive. The art is really good. And I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of infighting and political manipulation among the factions involved among the Pacific Islanders. But I'm usually a little disappointed by the end result. I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm hoping that when I read the current story arc again (when its finished) I'll get it a little better. My feelings about Cave Carson are rather mixed as well. As for "I Am Bane," I have a lot to say about how bad it is. But I don't have a whole lot of time to go into it right now. Hopefully, I'll have some time tomorrow to go over the many eye-rolling moments in "I Am Bane" Chapter Four.

I bit the bullet and got Kong digitally today and I have to say the same, although the art is really good and I like the human characters there's just something a little off. It's still enjoyable but I feel like it's missing something that would make it great.

Wonder Woman '77 Meets the Bionic Woman #3: This issue focuses a bit more on the villains (all from the WW and Bionic Woman's tv shows). After Wonder Woman and Jaime stop the missiles (featuring a really cool scene of Jaime flying the invisbile jet), there are several pages devoted to the villains that recap their television appearances. Also in this issue, we see Fembots, Max, the bionic dog as well as a scene with Jaime's parents. The art is getting better. Some panels are spot on featuring the likenesses of the titular heroines, while others maintain the spirit of them. 3 issues in and I feel like the book is getting its stride and coming together. Granted this isn't some life-changing book, but is sure is nostalgic fun! Next issue, off to Paradise Island. 8/10

I just loved the part of where Jamie is flying the invisible jet and the art is outrageous and it's quite nostalgic in my book. I just can't wait for the next issue of which they go to Paradise Island and this is becoming a favorite of mine ...

Green Arrow #19 - Green Arrow hasn't been this good in a very long time. Percy really gets the "social justice warrior" concept of the hero. Green Arrow's reunion with Arsenal is anything but expected. It was nice to see Black Canary and Arsenal bond a bit while meeting for the first time in the current continuity. Count Vertigo's new design is creepy-cool to the max. I love where this book is heading. 8/10.
