Anyone else here opted in on some Kickstarter books? Im asking because of the thread about Kesel and Grummett's "There is no Section Zero". Ive backed 2, both by John Ostrander. Hexer Dusk with Jan Duurseema and Kros: Hallowed Ground with Tom Mandrake Both seemed to be no-brainers to me, a vampire story with the Mandrakeman, and a Star Warsian story with Jan. Kros is close to print so Im getting impatienter to see it all the time.

Lansdale and Sam Glanzman, and Voyage to the Deep by Sam Glanzman. I almost pulled the trigger on "The Art of Dean Cornwell" but decided I'd been spending too much money of late.

I know the theory of Kickstarter but I'm wondering how much creators really need for a project and also whether some unscrupulous people might just pocket the money and produce nothing. Does anyone know of this happening yet?

Does anyone know of this happening yet? Some do fail. But not a huge amount. Every one I've backed has been by a reputable professional. I fell in love with the idea after buying into Hate Mail: The Definitive Collection by Mr Bingo. A collection of postcards Mr Bongo was commissioned to send to strangers, essentially abusing them in the some of the most profane, witty ways Ive ever seen. Google Hate Mail Mr Bingo to get an idea. Not everyones cup of tea I know, but I loved them right from the start. Very NSFW, very funny, but not something to read if youre easily offended. Paid the extra to have it personalised for my lady for her birthday (I believe it arrived the day before by some miracle). Lucky for me she loved it cos some of my friends thought I was going to die.

Does anyone know of this happening yet? There are sad stories, yes. Hopefully individual backers didn't lose too much.

Possibly of interest to folks here... Karl Kesel is Kickstarting a new graphic novel, Impossible Jones. It's getting down to crunch time. I haven't supported any Kickstarters in a while because I still have seven books outstanding. But I went ahead.

Yeah, I keep getting the e-mail notifications for Impossible Jones, but I'm still on the fence about pledging. I've got three outstanding (Lonely War of Capt. Willy Schultz, Grell's Maggie the Cat and Section Zero 1959), so I can understand about being hesitant to invest in any new ones.

I've been backing a lot recently as I try to get more involved in the Kickstarter community. The first project I backed, way back in 2014, was one where the creators apparently too the money and ran to the tune of $17k. Since then, I haven't had that happen, but I've had some projects I backed get way, way behind schedule, which is why I made sure to have my book completed before I launched. It's just really a drag when they don't come through!

I discovered Kickstarter late, and am spotty on checking it. I usually only find and pledge on a project if I hear about it elsewhere. I think I’ve been lucky and received everything I’ve backed, but will admit that I’m more a pledge it and forget it person, with occasional complete surprises showing up at my door.
