Welcome back for another week of fresh comics hot off the racks reviewed by everyday readers just like you! And how do we do it you ask? We do it by asking actual, unpaid readers from right here at the CCF to talk about what they read this week and that means you too! So if you read it, tell us about it here whether it's a full on review or just a quick comment about what you liked or disliked. As the posts come in I'll hyperlink them here for easy browsing. Sun Bakery #1 (Image) $5.99
Corey "The Ray" Lewis' first true solo project in a good long while that seeks to be an American take on Japan's long-running and incredibly influential anthology comics magazine "Weekly Shonen Jump". It features three stories in this issue (with them being rotated out depending on a certain strip's popularity or lack there-of, just like Shonen Jump), Arem Space Documentarian, Dream Skills, and Bat-Rider
Arem is basically "What if Metroid was more like Pokemon Snap and Samus posted on instagram?". As Corey said in the back-page, most of the stories in the book are going to be more "visual heavy" with little to no dialogue and Arem is probably a good showcase of everything that's either right or wrong with current Image books depending on your stance. Needless to say it's probably the book's weaker strips
Dream Skills is probably more in line with you would think of when it comes to Japanese comics; A simple premise with interesting ideas. In the future, people have "aura shields" that make guns all-together useless and the only way you can kill someone is with a sword, but you also have to have a strong enough chi to be able to wield one
Bat-Rider is a fun if campy idea that has a lot in common with Neal Adams' infamous Skateman and the 90's/early 00's obsession with extreme sports. It's about a boy who wears a motorcycle helmet with little batwings that has a talking skateboard. He takes on EXTREME challenges from others, like jumping over a crater
If you like Corey's stuff, then by all means support him, but the average reader (and myself as well) will probably pass on this, mainly due to the $6 price tage

The Power Of The Dark Crystal #1 of 12 (Boom/Archania)
This is something that I never thought would ever see. Like many boys/men my age I'm sure, I grew up with Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal, it was a movie that I re-watched constantly along with the "preferred" versions of the original star wars trilogy on VHS. Rumors abounded for years about a proposed sequel dubbed "The Power Of The Dark Crystal", but like Duke Nukem Forever, it was stuck in development hell for years. All I can say is that I was not disappointed
The story takes place 100 years after the original film and the land is at peace after Jen and Kira's brave fight to free the people of Thra and restore the crystal shard. The crystal is worshiped and offered gifts in exchange for it's healing properties, but it's light is fading. Aughra, who keeps watch over the castle where the crystal resides spies a ball of fire falling from the sky; a fireling. The creature has come from far away to seek a way to save it's people and it desperately seeks the crystal shard to "rekindle it's clan's fire"

Action #974: a great issue by Jurgens, Zircher, and Segovia leading into Superman Reborn. First, I loved the cover and the resemblance to Henry Cavill's Superman/Clark Kent. This issue is filled with lots of plot points cover to cover. Superman tries to save Lana, the mysterious team led by Hank Henshaw make a devastating move, and Lois's investigation of Clark Kent takes a very creepy turn. The Lois/Clark mystery is my favorite part, but the rest of the book was great. No doubt, the upcoming Superman Reborn is going to be something epic (I Hope!) 9/10

Wonder Woman 17: another chapter of The Truth by Rucka and Sharp. Lots of bits and pieces in this somewhat confusing issue. Diana is still locked away in a mental hospital hanging out with the snake that lives in her arm. Just when we seem to be getting somewhere (Diana and the snake play word association), Diana blanks out. The part with Steve, Etta, and Ferdinand is gritty and violent. Barbara and Veronica have an interesting scene that does not bode well for Barbara. Also a confusing scene with the tree on Paradise Island. (A minor art quibble--I though one of the Amazons was a man. Later when Dr.poison appears, I thought she was a man as well) Overall, I'm glad to be reading Wonder Woman again, but this story is beginning to wear thin with me (especially after the spectacular year 1 arc). Hoping for a big payoff (that needs to come sooner than later). 6/10

Written by Ryan North. Art and Cover by Derek Charm. The gang lost a bet with Reggie last issue. This issue he gets the gang to record a music video & it's terrible. Dilton helps Jughead edit the video. He digitally edits the audio & video to make it better. He also makes a funny version as a joke. Guess which one goes viral? This issue features both Reggie & Dilton. Another humorous issue. I hope Waid can keep this style on the title when he takes over with #15. This title still is my favorite book in the New Riverdale. 9/10.

Written by Joshua Williamson. Cover by Carmine Di Giandomenico. Art by Carmine Di Giandomenico, Davide Gianfelice, Neil Googe. The conclusion of the Rogues story. Williamson hits all the right notes. The Flash wins. The Rogues go to prison. Capt Cold keeps the Rogues in line. They rob & steal but avoid killing. It also sets up a new status quo with Capt Cold the kingpin of crime in Central City. In some ways this is a check off the boxes story but Williamson does it so well I don't mind. My only complaint was the need for 3 different artists on one issue. 7/10.

Written by Greg Rucka. Art and Cover by Liam Sharp. I agree with mrjupiter's review. The art is gorgeous. The concept is perfect. However Rucka's glacial pacing is ruining a good story. He is a good writer. Sometimes he takes forever to set up all the "pieces" of the story. We need more of the even # issues Rucka. I am starting to see why DC did WW this way instead of a separate Sensation Comics. One title would have sold well...the other not so much. 6/10.

Then I asked myself if I would have paid $48 to see the sequel in theaters. My answer: only if I heard it's amazing. So please do keep reviewing this one!

Sixteen issues in and we still don't really have a full story. I keep thinking of that Monty Python gag where everybody yells "Get on with it!"

I will be getting the tpb editions. Wish I had signed on for Jughead and Archie from the get go!

It is the story Rucka is telling in the odd # issues that is paced so slowly. If DC had done two separate titles WW & Sensation to tell the two different stories the story being told in the odd # issues would have been outsold by the story told in the even # issues.

Please let me know when you get the tpb's & let me know what you thought about the stories. At least you got Reggie & Me from the start. Don't forget to keep an eye out for the One Shots coming in March, April & May with Moose, Sabrina, Little Archie & others.

I very rarely buy physical comics because of how fast I read them, but yeah, if I had any LCS near me TPOFTDC #1 would have been an almost instant day 1 purchase
