Most listened to songs of 2022
# 10 - Thanks A Lot - Ernest Tubb
This was Tubbs last big hit as a solo artist (he had some minor hits in duets with Loretta Lynn). The title track from his 1964 album, the album itself is not great, but has some amazing personnel on it, including Grady Martin on guitar, both Pig Robbins and Floyd Cramer on piano, and, shockingly to me, Jack Greene on drums (I had no idea Greene played drums). This is the last hurrah of truly vintage Ernest Tubb honky-tonk. And it's damn good.

# 9 -Aaron Lee Tasjan - 12 Bar Blues
We had Tasjan earlier in the list, but here he is with probably my favorite song of his. This is just a super fun song all about the great bars that Tasjan has known and a little bit of stream of consciousness about other profound subjects. Largely spoken word set to music, with a little musical interludes. And any song that name-checks Philip Levine is more than alright.
"I feel like if writing stuff down really changed anything A lot more people would know who Philip Levine is
He was an American Poet Laureate I wonder why my teachers forgot to tell me about him in school Probably cause his poems have got bad words in them Talk about bored of education; American style"

# 8 - Amarillo Highway - Terry Allen
How to explain Terry Allen? He went to the same school as Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Joe Ely. He's a celebrated visual artist who has received three NEA grants and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He wrote songs for David Byrne's True Stories film. And he has sporadically released albums over the years that include two absolute cult classics, "Juarez" in 1975 and "Lubbock (on everything) in 1979. It's from the latter album that this song comes.
Amarillo Highway is probably best know for the cover version by Robert Earl Keen. But Allen's version is excellent. Allen conveys the lonesome dusty expanses of west Texas along with the Texas bravado.
"Yeah, some call me high hand And some call me low hand But, I'm holding what I am, the wheel"

I think I've said this before, but I'll say it again, 1973 was one of the best years for albums ever.
The reason I say this will come in to focus in a couple weeks.
But...damn!

As long as Cal Smith's "Country Bumpkin" doesn't show up on the "best of" or "most listened to" list when we get to 1974, we're golden.
If it does, our friendship is immediately dissolved.
I despise that song. I would subject myself to a Clockwork Orange scenario with "Convoy" playing 1000 times on repeat before I could ever stomach Country Bumpkin.

It won't show up. But, while I think it's a terrible song, I won't actually turn it off when it shows up, because it's so bad it's good. I do, however, love his song "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking." That is a hill upon which I will die.

That is a hill upon which I will die. Certainly. Mr Smith had his moments, but "Bumpkin" wasn't one of them, no matter what the charts say. In that respect, keep in mind that Pac-Man Fever was a hit at one time too, proving yet again that the record buying public is certainly not infallible.

# 7 - Sometimes - Luke Bell
The last one by Bell for the year. Another great classic country honky-tonk song. One can only imagine how incredible that career could have been with the proper medication, therapy and without the self-medication.
R. I. P. again to great one in the making.
"We stayed out all night and fought dogs We drank like fish and loved like hogs What a trifle of a life for a man to live"

I love that song! C. W. McCall is exactly what you need when you're "headin' for bear on I-one-oh, 'Bout a mile outta Shaky Town" and you're "about to put the hammer down." A predicament I often find myself in, naturally.

Hi, all. I'm bored and looking for something uptempo that's not metal or 60s/70s rock. Anyone got any suggestions?

Moore's allegedly playing the blues here, but he plays the blues like it's hard rock, so this may or may meet the "not rock" criterion. Definitely upbeat, though
