Most listened to songs of 2021 # 83 - The Weight - The BandI listen to very little at this point that you would find on the "classic rock" radio stations. The Band is one of the few exceptions. And even with that, this came as a bit of a surprise. It's a perfectly fine song and it does invite analysis...but it's probably The Band's biggest song over the years and it can come across as a bit played out. Still, always love the interplay between Levon Helm and Rick Danko's vocals.
My favorite version of this song is the version from "The Last Waltz" with the Staple Singers-- what a great performance- God, I love Mavis Staples' voice!
I almost used that video. I try to default to live performances if they're available and decent quality. I decided to go with a live version with just The Band. But, yeah, it's great, as is the lovely Ms. Staples.

# 82 - Six Years Come September - American Aquarium
This one was off the first (and better) of two albums that American Aquarium released in 2020. I'm a big fan of the band and Lamentations was a fabulous album, one of my favorites of last year.
This is a lament about bad choices, lost loves and recovery. It's the kind of thing that Jason Isbell has done so well over the years and if you're a fan I encourage you to give American Aquarium a good listen.

I don't know if there are any Uli Jon Roth fans here, but this was just recently uncovered and posted. It is pretty much "holy grail" video footage of Uli with the Scorpions in 1977. If anyone has listened to "Tokyo Tapes" countless times over the years like me, you know how special this is.

Anytime somebody listens to Uli-era Scorpions, the universe gets a little more righteous!

I literally just stumbled on a clip of The Sails of Charon and was floored both by how good it was and how fresh and modern it sounds. I forget they were legit before their power ballad days.

# 81 - Outfit - Drive-By Truckers
From the brilliant 2003 album Decoration Day comes this lovely Jason Isbell penned song. It's a father's advice to his son on how to do better than than him but still stay true to himself and his roots. And overall there's some damn fine advice here.
"Don't call what you're wearing an outfit Don't ever say your car is broke Don't sing with a fake British accent Don't act like your family's a joke
Have fun, and stay clear of the needle Call home on your sister's birthday Don't tell them you’re bigger than Jesus, don't give it away Don't give it away"
The only live version I could find easily by the Truckers had bad sound. So here is Isbell along with Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley doing a nice acoustic version.

# 80 - Musta Notta Gotta Lotta - Joe Ely
Part of the reason this is here is probably because 2021 marked the 40th anniversary of the release of the album for which this was the title track.
But part is also because this is Ely in pure Roots Rock mode. This was the Lubbock country boy who wowed audiences opening for The Clash in 1979 and 1980. This would have done another Lubbock boy, Buddy Holly, proud.

The first Rage Against the Machine album is spectacular. Man, does it hold up. So raw and authentic, and the grooves just slap.

The first Rage Against the Machine is spectacular. Man, does it hold up. So raw and authentic, and the grooves just slap. Absolutely! I remember that time really well around 1992, the music scene was changing so quickly, and as an 80's guitar player a lot of the newer music just wasn't as much fun to play. Rage just nailed that sweet spot for me, great riffs and energy, and you're spot on about the grooves. I loved performing "Know Your Enemy" and "Killing in the Name" many times over the years, and Rage stuff was always a crowd-pleaser. I'm a big fan of Evil Empire as well. "People of the Sun", "Bulls on Parade", so much good stuff there.

In fact, I like the riff up to/underthe solo in Bombtrack more than the solo. SO FUN.

Dang it, now I need to dig out my wah wah pedal and jam some Rage... Right on man! Hey, on the note of the wah pedal, I don't know if you run it this way already, but I was always a traditional run the wah pedal in the front of the signal chain and ahead of distortion. With Morello, I often struggled to get the same deep sweep of his wah, and finally tried putting the wah after distortion. Made a big difference for me getting closer to his sound on some songs.

As far as I know, Rage Against the Machine never specified what kind of machine they were furious with. I bet it was a printer.

Thanks for the tip. With my setup, I basically have to run the wah straight from the guitar before distortion because I use a modeling amp. I've tried running it through the FX input system, but for whatever reason it always sounds like total crap that way. I'm sure that is just a function of my specific gear, though. I don't gig or anything, so it works for living room jamming and light recording. As far as I know, Rage Against the Machine never specified what kind of machine they were furious with. I bet it was a printer. Or a wireless router. Or maybe the worst yet: a wireless printer.
