JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #114 On sale August 6, 1974 Written by Len Wein and Felton Marcus (no idea, a friend of Len maybe?) Penciled by Dick Dillin Inked by Dick Giardano Edited by Julius Schwartz Cover by Nick Cardy ROLL CALL: (in present or "flashback") Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, J'onn J'onzz, Green Arrow, Atom, Black Canary, Elongated Man and Red Tornado SPECIAL GUEST STAR: Snapper Carr CAMEOS by Zatanna and Kid Flash and now... "THE RETURN OF ANAKRONUS!" Superman welcomes us to the the First Annual National Super-Thon! It's hour number sixteen and the JLA has raised over $10,000,000 for The United Charities. Among those manning the phone bank are Batman, Elongated Man, Green Arrow, Zatanna and Kid Flash. Black Canary tells us that in this hour Aquaman will be giving us a tour of Atlantic, we'll have a performance from Penwick's Playful Pachyderms and "Old Blue Eyes" will be stopping by. If I missed Rip Taylor, I'm going to be upset. Watching this from home is the JLA's former member, Snapper Carr. Suddenly, his tv is blown up by Anakronus on his mission of revenge against the JLA! He gathers the entire Carr family in the front room and begins to tell us the story of his first encounter with the JLA. He was a partner of the Lord of Time, helping him into this era and building equipment to fight the JLA. He was able to avoid the Time Lord's defeat, but grew enraged as he saw the JLA destroy the weapons they had worked on. He turned a nearby biker gang into a group of armored knights. With the help of Anakronus, they were able to defeat and capture Wonder Woman, Batman and Green Arrow. Snapper doesn't remember anything about this, but Anakronus tells him to be quiet. He's dialing the JLA and demanding the telethon money as ransom. Naturally, Ollie is the one answering the phone. Unfortunately for him, this is Ollie's third crank call in the last hour and he lets him have it before Elongated Man disconnects the call. Aankronus tosses the phone against the wall and then regales us with part two of his JLA fight. He turns the machinery from the lab into giant robots that take out Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman. We also learn that later that afternoon Superman will be playing a football game against the Jets, Dolphins and Cowboys. Snapper wants to hear if Anakronus took down Superman and J'onn J'onzz. Anakronus, talking more like Pathological Liar Tommy Flanagan than ever, tells the story of how he changed two ordinary lizards into a fire breathing dragon and a futuristic adaptolizard. J'onn tries to fight the fire dragon, but it tossed to the ground and the area is blasted with fire changing the sand to glass. He breaks free though, before being crushed by the coils of the dragon. Superman fights the adaptolizard until it changes its skin to kryptonite. Anakronus has now defeated the whole JLA. While Zatanna is performing her act, Anakronus has Snapper call the telethon with his demands. Surely they won't hang up on the kid that betrayed them to the Joker. Snapper wants to know if he defeated the JLA, why is he out for revenge. Anakronus states that he was betrayed and when he let them go to fix his precious equipment, they attacked. He used his chronal transmuter (no doubt given to him by his wife, Morgan Fairchild) to turn them into cavemen, then amoebas, then nothing! The JLA is fine though since the effect wore off. Snapper's phone call reaches Green Lantern and he tells them of Anakronus' demands and suggests they "minimize" this "little problem" with a "little telephone stunt." Suddnely, the Atom pops out of the phone! He's unable to stop the villain, but Elongated Man and Red Tornado come through the front door just in time. Anakronus blasts Red Tornado with is gun, but is defeated when Ralph coils him up and Atom socks him in the jaw. Red Tornado is unhurt as the impressive looking raygun is actually just a .45 automatic. Snapper figured out he was crazy when he said J'onn was fighting the dragon after being blasted with fire. The heroes take him away, but Atom asks why Snapper didn't just use his still working signal device? Snapper didn't think he had a right to after all that happened, but Atom asks why he's still wearing it. The story ends there as we get a new toteboard total and Batman begins to sing "You'll Never Walk Alone." The end! Story is dedicated to Gardner Fox. JLA Mailroom: Readers were happy with JLA #111 with lots of bickering as to who should be in and out of the JLA. REPRINT #1 is a "JUST A STORY" feature from Comic Cavalcade #18 from 1945. REPRINT #2 is "CRISIS ON EARTH THREE" from JLA #29 and 30 in 1964 as the JLA and JSA take on the CSA. There is also a boots quiz, a puzzle, a trivia quiz and a past members feature to fill out the comic. STORY: C+ Anakronus is an utter train wreck, but it was nice to see Snapper again. We also need more superhero telethons. I don't recall Giffen and DeMatteis doing this in JLI, but it needs to be a flashback tale. ART: A- Always nice to see Dillin's take on the Silver Age JLA. COVER: B- Cardy is still getting a little more space. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: C Snapper returns and we'll see him one more time at the end of our little journey. The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon got over $16,000,000 in pledges in 1974, so the telethon total 2/3 of the way through seems about right. Up next... the return of Denny O'Neil and J'onn J'onzz!

I'm reading through Showcase: JLA, Volume 2, and I finished #29 a few hours ago. I'll be reading #30 before I go to bed. One of the best JLA/JSA team-ups!
I love the Crime Syndicate! Even though I didn't read a huge amount of DC Comics in the 1970s and early 1980s, I still saw the Crime Syndicate in the Secret Society of Super-Villains series and later in the great JLA/JSA/All-Star Squadron crossover in the early 1980s. So I've always had a kind of a soft spot for them.
Some of the JLA stories in this volume are ... a little weak, let's say? But #29 and #30 is an awesome story.
I'm very much enjoying your reviews. I should have commented on the Freedom Fighters story because they are awesome! And a lot of these, I haven't read, so it's nice to know a little bit about stories I haven't seen.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #115 On sale October 3, 1974 Written by Denny O'Neil Penciled by Dick Dillin Inked by Dick Giordano Edited by Julius Schwartz Cover by Nick Cardy ROLL CALL: Superman, Batman, Flash, Atom and Green Lantern SPECIAL GUEST STAR: J'onn J'onzz And now... "THE LAST ANGRY GOD!" Batman is on monitor duty on the JLA satellite and calls for help when he sees a rocket coming right for him. Green Lantern snares it in a baseball glove and Superman rips open the hull to see what's inside. It turns out to be their old teammate J'onn J'onzz. The team gathers inside and J'onn tells them of recent happenings on New Mars, the planet he and the rest of the Martian survivors have been colonizing. J'onn and friends encountered a giant set of doors on a mountainside and naturally tried to open them. Unfortunately, he releases Korge! God of Rage! And he emphasizes the end of every sentence with GIANT RED LETTERS LIKE THIS!!! Korge uses fire to force the Martians together and reads J'onn's mind to find out about the JLA. He demands J'onn gets the JLA to come to New Mars to fight him or he will kill J'onn's people. He puts J'onn in a space-warper and sends him to Earth. Superman, Green Lantern, Flash and Atom agree to come with J'onn, they put the space warper back together. This time it functions more like a transporter, instantly taking the JLA across the galaxy. Atom and Flash geek out over the device, but it's time to deal with Korge.
They ask J'onn what kind of God he is. J'onn says ,"self appointed" and Atom wonders if he's one of the "Elder Gods the Lovecraft Cult fantasizes about." You just know Ray Palmer was there when Gary Gygax invented D&D on Earth One. Since there seems to be magic involved, the team of Flash and Green Lantern will take the first shot and go through the giant doors. Flash attacks first and puts Korge in a vortex. However, when he punches Korge, the God turns slippery. The floor turns slickas well and the Flash can't run anymore and Kroge smashes him and throws him out the door. Green Lantern suspects Korge gets his power from the room they are in, so he causes a cave in. He tries to pick him up with a green energy construct, but Korge turns yellow as soon as it touches him. He fires a yellow beam back at Green Lantern and tosses him out the door. Now it's Superman's turn and he decks the angry god to the ground. However, Korge turns a boulder into a giant rock of kryptonite! Korge walks off with his two new toys while the rest of the JLA ponders what to do next.
Flash figures out that Korge finds out his opponents weakness when he is touched. Atom figures out how the space warper works and he and Flash devise a plan. The four heroes enter the space warper and come out with nothing seeming to happen. The four attack Korge and he traps Flash, Green Lantern and J'onn as he did before. Suddenly, Green Lantern shrinks out of sight, Flash uses green energy to get rid of the kryptonite boulder, Martian Manhunter puts Korge in a vortex and a full sized Atom knocks Korge out. The team used the space warper to have their powers and weaknesses switch bodies. After switching back, J'onn thanks the team on behalf of his people.
The End!
JLA Mailroom: The majority of readers liked the Amazo story from issue #112.
JLA Mailroom Extra: Most did not like the JLA/ JSA team up in #113, but mostly because it was too short and only included four JSAers.
REPRINT #1: "EVIL STAR OVER HOLLYWOOD!" is a JSA story from All- Star Comics #44 in 1948. It's a very good one.
REPRINT #2: "THE INDESTRUCTIBLE CREATURES OF NIGHTMARE ISLAND!" is from Justice League of America #40 in 1965. This is one of the best JLA stories of all time.
The is also a puzzle, a cover gallery of this issue's reprints and a membership quiz.
STORY: B- Denny O'Neil wrote this? It seems to be much more of a plot heavy Gardner Fox story. I liked the way he wrote Atom and Flash. This is without question my all time favorite Denny O'Neil JLA story.
ART: A- They do a good job on J'onn, but an even better version is coming later on in this era.
COVER: B- Back to two big boxes.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: C+ O'Neil wrote the first J'onn J'onzz on New Mars story in Worlds Finest #212 in June 1972. J'onn returns next in a short arc in Adventure Comics in 1977 where I first encountered him.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #116 On sale December 5, 1974 Written by Cary Bates Penciled by Dick Dillin Inked by Dick Giordano Edited by Julius Schwartz Cover by Nick Cardy ROLL CALL: Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow and Elongated Man SPECIAL GUEST CAMEO by .........find out at the end and now.... (timpani roll)......"THE KID WHO WON HAWKMAN'S WINGS!" Green Arrow teleports up to the JLA satellite as an emergency replacement for Superman, who has an emergency in the bottled city of Kandor. Green Arrow decides to catch up on some fan mail to pass the time. One wants recipes from each hero, another wants a set of baby pictures and the final one is a teen that wants to meet Hawkman and has been "playing" him in Midway City. With Hawkman trillions of miles away, Green Arrow decides he should meet up with him. The next night the Ace Archer arrives in Midway City and spies a gang of robbers in clown makeup. Before he can act though, a somewhat familiar winged warrior swoops in from the sky, nets the robbers and flies off with the trapped gang. At Police HQ Commissioner Emmett finds the calling card of this hero, a lone feather. He believes that Hawkman has returned, but is keeping the fact under wraps for reasons unknown. Green Arrow goes down another street and sees the man flying in the air when he is trapped in a globe of water. A voice rings out that it is Matter Master that has "Hawkman" trapped and he's declaring war. Green Arrow gets "Hawkman" out of the globe before he can drown. After "Hawkman" wakes up, he and Green Arrow have been joined by Batman, Flash, Aquaman and Elongated Man. Honestly, none of them look happy to be there. The young man calls himself Golden Eagle while in costume, but can quickly change into his normal guise of Charlie Parker 16 year old orphan and Hawkman fanboy. He explains that he was using a homemade costume before, but he was struck by a beam of light and transformed into Golden Eagle with a real costume that let him soar in the air. He's been apprehending crooks for months, but now that Matter Master thinks he's the real Hawkman he may need a little bit of help. Elongated Man spies the Matter Master's Mentachem Rod floating in the air and the team set out after it. The Matter Master's voice is heard again as he changes the five Leaguers heads into those of five timid animals. Then he creates five predators and sets them loose on the JLA. Naturally, each team member's minds overtake the animal instincts and Elongated Man's snake beats the mongoose, Aquaman's fish smacks down a walrus, Flash's deer outcorners a cheetah, Batman's mouse escapes an owl and Green Arrow's fly uses an arrow to take down a spider. After the victories each hero returns to normal. But now Golden Eagle is missing! He's been transported to Matter Master's hideout. He finds the villain resting comfortably in a glass case. He has been using his more powerful subconscious mind to cause trouble with his Mentachem Rod and now he's ready to destroy Hawkman! Charley finally gets him to wake up and see he's not Hawkman. He traps Golden Eagle in the cave rock and figures out that his subconscious mind had used the Mentachem Rod to create Golden Eagle since he could no longer tangle with Hawkman. He's about to destroy Golden Eagle when the JLA arrives to save the day. Fortunately, when the Golden Eagle costume was created it had a working JLA signal device that Charley used to tell them of his location. They use the Mentachem Rod to turn Charley back to normal. He wishes his hero could have been along for the mission when Hawkman arrives! To be continued! JLA Mailroom: Tom Bierbaum enjoyed JLA #114, but it was a mixed reaction overall. Most said they will miss Len Wein's writing. One reader looked through his full run of JLA issues before figuring out that Anakronus had never really appeared before. REPRINT #1 is "MASTERMIND OF MENACES" from BRAVE & THE BOLD #61 in 1965. It is a Starman and Black Canary team up against the Mist. I need to find the alternate Earth where Murphy Anderson did the art on JLA instead of Mike Sekowsky. REPRINT #2 is "THE CHALLENGE OF THE UNTOUCHABLE ALIENS" from JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #15 in 1962. It's a good one involving alternate Earths and misunderstood rock people. REPRINT #3 is the "JUST A STORY" feature from COMIC CAVALCADE #19 in 1947. There is also a villains quiz and a puzzle. STORY: C+ Another small cast story. Charley trying to replace Hawkman was the high point. ART: A- This is Dick Giordano's final issue as inker. COVER: B- Poor Nick Cardy, boxed in again. It is also his final issue as cover artist. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: C Charley will be back next issue. This marks the end of the first section of issues from this era. It's been quite stable so far on the creative side, but that is about to change. Dick Dillin will stay, but he'll get a new inker. The cover artist spot will be open for a little while. However, we're about to see the writing job get rotated quite a bit. This is also the last issue of the 100 Pages for 60 cents era. The book will go monthly again in 1975 with the cover price of a quarter. Up next... only a thirty day wait!

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #117 On sale January 2, 1975 Written by Elliott S! Maggin Penciled by Dick Dillin Inked by Frank McLaughlin Edited by Julius Schwartz Cover by Mike Grell ROLL CALL: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Atom and at the end Flash, Aquaman, Black Canary, Red Tornado and Elongated Man SPECIAL GUEST STAR: Hawkman This issue has our first Hostess Twinkie Ad: "Batman and the Mummy" drawn by Dick Giordano and now... "I HAVE NO WINGS AND I MUST FLY!" On the first page we meet The Equalizer flying through space. He does not look nearly as cool as Edward Woodward or Denzel Washington. On the JLA satellite, Green Lantern sees a familiar ship in orbit around Mars and calls out an emergency signal to the rest of the team. Batman and Green Arrow arrive from Midway City along with Charley Parker. Green Arrow states that they were considering Charley as an honorary member when Hawkman appeared. They wait on him as Superman and Atom arrive. When Hawkman fails to appear, the team figures it was some sort of illusion. The JLA flies to Mars while Charley Parker kicks back in the satellite.Impossible as it may seem, he will not get into any trouble. The team arrives on Mars and Green Lantern locates Hawkman's invisible ship. They try to get in, but are thwarted by the ships weapons and their own uncharacteristic mistakes. Superman and Batman even start bickering with each other after being a team for years. Batman, Atom and Green Arrow make their way inside the ship to encounter someone that looks like Katar Hol, but shorter and thinner. He apologizes for what's going on and defeats them. As he pilots the ship away we learn that this is actually Hawkman and he is using some disease to get stronger. He flies off to confront the Equalizer and leaves the JLA on Mars. The JLA discovers each member is now roughly the same height, they seem to have parts of each others powers and seem to be sharing each others mental abilities as well. They combine their willpower to activate Green Lantern's power ring and fly off after Hawkman's ship. Meanwhile, Hawkman tells us what happened on Thanagar after he got there. The Equalizer arrived and sprayed some sort of disease on the planet that made everyone the same size and mental abilities. He then took off on a course for Earth. Since Harrison Bergeron wasn't around, Hawkman went after him to cure himself, Hawkgirl and the rest of Thanagar. Hawkman finds the Equalizer's ship and attacks, but each attack is thwarted by equal force. The Equalizer then vaporizes Hawkman's space craft, but he is saved by the arriving JLA. Since Hawkman is now bigger and stronger they recognize him even without the wings and wearing a shirt. They try to be nice and parlay with the Equalizer, but he responds with an equal amount of aggression. They attack him with the power ring, but he responds with a yellow beam. It's too big of a response, so he compensates by saving the team. After another failed attempt, Green Arrow finally comes up with the answer. If the equalizer is going to do as they wish and leave the galaxy, they need to hit him with the opposite emotion. All he is saying, is give hate a chance. Each hero thinks of something that makes him hate and the Equalizer disappears. With him gone, each hero returns to normal and Hawkman even gets his wings back. Back at the JLA satellite, Hawkman vows that he will cure the rest of his planet of the Equalizing Disease. In the meantime he asks to be a member of the JLA again. The team votes him back in and everyone goes home. Oddly, Black Canary is the rotating chairperson of this meeting. Have they really gotten rid of the Equal....OH FORGET IT! The End! JLA Mailroom (now with added Hawkman!): One positive letter on JLA #115 as they wait for the mail to catch up with the monthly schedule. Also included are eleven responses on JLA membership. STORY: C Maggin's attempts at poetry on the first and last pages are a waste of space. I wonder if this was originally 18 pages like the next issue and those following and they had to expand to 20 at the last minute. ART: B+ It will take a little bit for this team to gel together. COVER: B+ Yellowjacket is joining the JLA? Also note the truth in advertizing on the top, "The World's Greatest Super-Heroes!" HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: C Hawkman's back. Charley Parker never did get that honorary membership and was next seen as a West Coast Titan in Teen Titans #50 in 1977. Up next... the most important comic book in the history of human civilization!

Yep, Golden Eagle's secret identity was Charlie 'Bird' Parker. Had to be a tribute, but I don't think they acknowledged it in the book.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #118 On Sale February 11, 1975 Written by Elliot S! Maggin Penciled by Dick Dillin Inked by Frank McLaughlin Edited by Julius Schwartz Cover by Dick Giordano ROLL CALL: Superman, Flash, Aquaman, Black Canary, Hawkman and Red Tornado "Batman and The Mummy" is our Twinkie ad for another month and now..."TAKEOVER OF THE EARTH MASTERS!" Aquaman is on monitor duty aboard the JLA Satellite. With him, and listening to his OUTRAGEOUS stories about Atlantis for the last four hours, is Hawkman. Aquaman tells him he needs to get some outside interests while he waits for his wife and home planet to get cured. Hawkman sees the Flash battling strange blobs in Central City. Aquaman says they don't need to activate the emergency signal yet, but Hawkman does anyway and the call goes out to the JLA. Elongated Man and Batman are busy on cases. Atom is giving a speech. Red Tornado runs out on his landlord. Black Canary was reading a book, so she's free. Superman leaves Lois in a dark alley and he responds. Green Lantern seems to be waaaaay out of town and there is no mention of Green Arrow at all which suits me just fine. Superman, Red Tornado and Black Canary join a surprised Flash in Central City. Aquaman arrives to tell the others why the signal went out. While talking about Hawkman behind his back, the strange creatures sneak up on the team and zap the Flash! Black Canary takes him up the satellite while the rest try to stop these blobs. After doing well initially, Superman feels the presence of kryptonite in the area. The blobs are making it out of their own cells! This leads to one of the great lines in the history of the JLA from Aquaman, "SNAKES! FROGS! SALAMANDERS! HELP SUPERMAN!" Thor's, "I would have words with thee!" has nothing on that. Unfortunately, the blobs cancel out Aquaman's mental commands and the animals start doing circus tricks. In the meantime, the blobs have now evolved into higher life forms with legs and heads and tentacle things. The creatures defeat the heroes and vanish. Back up in the satellite, Flash tells the rest of the team of a possible connection to these creatures. A couple of days ago he met with a Dr. Hubble, a radio astronomer in Central City. Dr. Hubble had turned off his radio telescope in frustration a few weeks ago when a message arrived yesterday in plain English. "Help on Way- Have dispatched a company of adaptoids-- Will arrive in one Earth day." We see that Dr. Hubble accidentally sent out a message and a flying monkey alien picked up parts of it. He thinks Earth is in trouble due to a batch of super beings, so he's brought the adaptoids to take care of the problem. He radios the JLA, tells them his adaptoids are in three parts of the globe, challenges them to fight the adaptoids and then skips town. Teams are picked, Hawkman is left behind and told to round up the rest of the JLA if this team fails, and we're off! Flash and Black Canary arrive in Hong Kong and spy the adaptoids out at sea. Unfortunately, the Flash runs into an invisible barrier on the way and is out cold. It has not been a good day for Barry. Black Canary lands hard in the water, breaking her leg in the process. She reaches the Flash by blasting the adaptoids with her sonic scream. She activates their JLA signal devices and they teleport back to the satellite. Superman arrives in San Francisco as the top of a tower suddenly blasts off. He attempts to intercept when one of the adaptoids flies into his body and phases into it. This hurts a lot. Superman ponders how quickly the adaptoids will get rid of the human race if they're not stopped as he tries to fly away. Too many of them have arrived however and he is forced to teleport back to the satellite. Red Tornado and Aquaman land in Venice. They spared no expense in the travel budget for this issue. Aquaman finds a batch of adaptoids in a canal and tries putting them in a whirlpool. Red Tornado tries to add his own power as well when he sees that Aquaman has been turned into a merman. Aquaman tells him they have to get out before "you get turned into a giant fan or something!" They teleport back to the satellite. The team arrives and notices that the satellite is empty. No one else has been rounded up and Hawkman has disappeared. Red Tornado finds a note from Hawkman telling the team he had to suddenly leave for Thanagar, please understand and that he'll return soon. The team is not happy. Superman is really ticked off explaining that Earth is in danger of being wiped out and he's running off to Thanagar to worry about his own needs. To be continued! What is it with Hawkman? First he's in, then he resigns, then he comes back and now he's off again. What is this? The Defenders? JLA Mailroom: In the oops department from JLA #115. A reader states that New Mars had a red sun in World's Finest #212 and that Superman shouldn't have his powers. Bob Rozakis admits that the writer and editor of both stories forgot that little detail. STORY: B+ These adaptoids are a tough group. Just enough action squeezed into the now 18 pages of story. ART: B+ COVER: B I like it when the cover matches the story inside. HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE: A+ As far as I can remember, this is the first comic book I ever read. up next...Hawkgirl saves the day! sort of...
