Back in late summer 2012, I got out some collections of Dark Shadows on DVD (from the local library), and watched them in chronological order - these very early b&w episodes were from the very beginning of the series, prior to the debut of Barnabas Collins. They were interesting, and involved a gorgeous young woman going to a mansion in New England to be a nanny for this bratty little kid. There were a lot of strange/creepy/mysterious elements to the show - including the implication that there were ghosts in the house; an alcoholic former artist?! who lived in the town; a suspicious policeman (played by the late Dana Elcar); a small house on the premises of the larger house that apparently held some dark secret; etc.
I remember that I stopped watching the show because I saw all of the DVD's the library had (at that time), and I didn't want to invest $ in buying the DVD sets.
That being said, this thread is making me re-interested in the show. I don't want to go back & re-watch the episodes I've already seen, so will probably try to start watching with the Barnabas Collins episodes - since those are the ones that people most remember.
I have yet to see the Johnny Depp DS film (2012), since I feel it will probably just be a watered-down version of the series.

I mean, it was nothing special, but I generally like Tim Burton's style and this film was entertaining enough while it played. However, I will qualify that by saying that, despite knowing about the Dark Shadows soap opera, I've never actually seen it -- it never made it over here to the UK and means nothing to folks on this side of the Atlantic. So, I can't compare the movie to the original, but I liked it fine for what it was.

Re: the popularity of the original Dark Shadows show back in 1966-1971 (when it originally aired on TV, at least in the U.S.), this was before my time.....However, I have talked to people who were school-age kids when the show was originally out, and many have memories of running home from school to be able to catch the show as it came on in the afternoons; this was before the days of VCR's/being able to record shows (and decades before streaming, etc.), so the only way to watch the show was as it actually came on the air.
And, it's a testimonial to the popularity of the show that it's gotten a following over the years, to the point where people who weren't even born when the show originally aired (myself included) have become fans.
When I did see the DVD's of the early seasons of DS, I can definitely understand why the show got this following - it's a very creepy, unnerving, slow-burning series. And, it has a lot of elements that are quintessential to horror - i.e., the haunted?! old gothic house on top the hill & near the ocean; the mysterious characters & unexplained events that take place in the house & the surrounding areas; dark secrets that have yet to be revealed; etc.
