I'm not used to that accent at all. You sounded like foghorn leghorn. Ah say, Ah say, boy, you're as sharp as a bowling ball.

See ... to our ears down there, neither I nor the other two sound particularly Southern at all. All a matter of persepctive, of course. Honestly I didn't hear much of an accent from any of you either. That may have something to do with the number of years I spent down south, though. I still sneak in a "y'all" on occasion, plus when I get really tired I start getting a much more pronounced drawl than you had in the article. Yeah, to me, Dan has only a super-slight Southern accent, if any. And the reporter doesn't Southern to me at all. I wonder if there's a reason he sounds more distinctively Southern to the non-U.S. ears here The most incomprehensible native English speakers I've ever were from Monroe County, Kentucky. It was trying to understand a foreign language.

I've just learned that my best friend at age 12 is dead from a stroke before age 40. Very sad. Much of our friendship was based on comics... going to the comic shops together, reading each other's titles... M had a knack for getting his rich grandpa to drive us 30 minutes to the next town's comic shop and sometimes even convincing him to buy not only him but the rest of us ( my cousin and me) a back issue as well! We drifted apart after his stepfather refused to send him to a Catholic high school. Frankly I think it's been 20 years since I spoke with him. I did hear things over the years second- and third-hand about hard-drug problems. ... Kids-- stay off the heroin and X and cocaine if you want to live past 40.

Dan's neighborhood looks beautiful. Sucks about all the burglaries. Hopefully the 7 kids they busted will be the end of it. In the meanwhile though, some modern steel doors and maybe bars over the windows aught to do the trick. Usually I'd be hesitant with window bars because depending on the type of house they can look ugly, but I think on that style brick home some black wrought iron decorative bars might look nice.

Is anyone else having troubles with the GCD the last couple of days? None of the cover images are loading for me and the advance search function isn't loading properly for me. Not sure if is on my end or if the site is undergoing some issues...

I haven't spoken to my best friend from when I was 12 in years either, but we still keep up with each other on facebook and, oddly, he still means a lot to me. Can't imagine what I'd be feeling if I got this news.

No shout out to the CCF in that interview, Dan? I'm disappointed.

Do people like Popeye? As a kid, I used to watch any cartoon that was on, so I saw a lot of Popeye, but I never got the appeal. I think I like Captain Strong better.

Do people like Popeye? As a kid, I used to watch any cartoon that was on, so I saw a lot of Popeye, but I never got the appeal. Ignore the color cartoons and watch the earlier black & white ones made by Fleischer Studios. They captured the appeal of the character much better. Better yet, read the Thimble Theatre comic strip by its creator, E.C. Segar, or his most capable successors, Bud Sagendorf and Bobby London. Segar's Popeye was an enormous success; readers loved him so much that he took over the strip from its original stars, Olive Oyl's brother Castor Oyl and Olive's first boyfriend, Ham Gravy. During one of Ham & Castor's get-rich-quick schemes, they needed to sail a boat somewhere and hired a sailor; the rest is history.
