So apparently my father-in-law has been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma stage 2. That's all we know at this point. But I'm really tired of cancer.

Thank you all of you for your insight and support - it means a great deal to me.
I figure that I had a longer run with this friend than I expected to - 25 years since his problems became visible and I was the last to either distance myself from him or by him. John Cleese once remarked that with regards to his divorces, that it isn't necessarily a bad thing just because a marriage doesn't end in death. I suppose I should look upon things in that respect.
Once again, thank you all - I truly appreciate your thoughts.

Your advice, insight, and thoughts meant a great deal to me when I read what you wrote about my issue, Slam. I wish I could offer something just as meaningful and helpful at this moment for you. I'm sorry that you and your family are going through this again and I hope for the best for your father-in-law.

Ugh, sorry to hear the shit news going around.
Chadwilliam, I'm sorry for the apparently random ghosting by your friend. While at least you know the likely reason, it still sucks. I've had a similar though less severe experience, and the takeaways I realized were I can't control what other people feel or do; it probably isn't because of something going on with me but something going on with them; mental illness sucks; after a point, I'm not investing energy in someone who doesn't return it. The door's always open, but I'm done being the one testing it. We eventually chatted and it's fine. I realized it wasn't about me after all. I like the advice to reiterate you'll be around and welcome to hear from him when he's ready and then don't push it.
Slam, I'm so sorry to hear. Cancer absolutely sucks, and I wish him a full recovery.

Well my two week term of being on call for jury duty is over. Had to report 3 times, but was released each time before the jury selection started as the cases were plead out before it began. Was told I shouldn't be called for at least 2 years now. We'll see.

I've been called to jury duty twice, and gotten on both times, despite the common wisdom around here that "engineers don't get picked." First time, it was a hung jury, and in retrospect, I'm glad the defendant wasn't declared guilty. I hope he wasn't retried. The second case I would have argued for the opposite result today than I did then; I think we were played for an insurance payout that wasn't really justified.

It’s amazing how far smoke will travel. There’s a forest fire just this side of Redfish Lake which is about 100 miles away. My eyes are burning and I can taste it. With temps over or near 100 and no humidity for at least the next two weeks it’s just going to get worse.

I experienced a similar thing last year with the wild fires in Canada, the smoke was crazy thick here south of Boston and I could smell like a heavy mesquite aroma. First time it happened I thought the fire was close to my apartment but do to the craziness of mother nature and the pattern of the winds it was well over 300 miles away.

Question for Icctrombone. I had to order a new phone. The seller was in Englishtown NJ and as you know, I am in Queens NY. The tracking had it picked up in Englishtown and then going to the distribution center in Jersey City, all good, just across the Hudson. But then! it goes from Jersey City to the Center in Trenton, the opposite side of the State and the 60 miles further away. How does this make sense. How does this not delay my receiving my phone? Perhaps you can explain this in your professional capacity. If not, thank you for letting me rant.

Some months ago I sent a gift to a friend in Edison New Jersey, and the tracking showed it moving from a distribution center in Brooklyn east to Queens before it finally went to New Jersey a few days later. If a distribution center is considered more of the 'main' distribution center than the place the package is currently located at, packages will often be sent there before delivery even if it means moving them farther away from their destination.

Give it time , if you never get it , the seller has to make good.
