Feeling good that my daughter made it through a week of Girl Scout day camp keeping her anxiety under control last week. As a teenaged helper (as opposed to a camper), she had to deal with taking instructions from adults and having patience with helping the little ones. Beyond managing her anxiety, she also found some joy in the experience. It's been nearly two years since she had a mental health crisis, which is a vast improvement over the years prior to that. Hooray for my little monkey.

First day of being on call for jury duty over. Got called in to report, showed up early for the 9:30 time because they are renovating the courthouse and it's closed so there are temporary courts in other downtown buildings, but no nearby parking, so had to park and walk five blocks to get there. 15 minutes after start time they came in and said the case had been continued, go home and call tonight (and every night for the next 2 weeks) to see if we will have to report again.
So since things are so uncertain for my schedule the next two weeks, I took the opportunity to do several of the errands that needed doing-went to BMV and renewed my vehicle registration for 2 years (expires on my bday just after jury duty period ends), returned some books to the library, went out and got my mom's b-day card and gift, filled up the car, etc. etc. Now I'm home for the rest of the day just waiting until I can call and see if I need to report again tomorrow.

I grew up calling it the DMV (Dept. of Motor Vehicles) but when I moved to Ohio, no one knew what that was; they call it Bureau of Motor Vehicles here (BMV), after being here for 21 years now, I've adjusted to the local parlance, but it still feels odd calling it that (but then it's the same feeling I have calling carbonated beverages pop instead of soda, but you adjust if you want to be understood by the people you are speaking to). -M

I remember my first time doing Jury Duty about maybe a decade ago? It was nice, got paid thirty bucks to sit on my ass, drink Mellow Yellow, read comics, and chat with people. We spent about maybe two or three days like that, never got called in. The only bad thing about it was that it was in the government building downtown up on the top floor and you had to go up on a glass elevator. Have a horrible fear of heights...

I've had jury duty 3 times (or was it 4?). One of those times, I had to call in two days in a row, but never go into the courthouse and was released on the third day. The first time, I had to go in to the courthouse, got called as a potential juror, but it was a petit jury and they got their 6 before I was even interviewed. It was a landlord-tenant dispute and the main question being asked was if you worked in real estate or knew someone who did; so, I knew I would be passed over if I had been called to interview. My mother, at that time, was the Executive VP of the local Association of Realtors and had been the President of the association in another city, had worked for two other boards and been a licensed realtor since the early-mid-70s. So, yeah; they were not going to pick me.
Last time I was called I was part of the group that had to report every morning, for the entire week, but never spent more than 90 minutes there, never served on a jury and took a week off of a very stressful job.
Still haven't gotten my chance to do my Henry Fonda impression.....
On of the most amazing casts ever assembled and the perfect material.

I've never been close to being a trial juror, but I was on a grand jury once. That was really interesting, even fun. There was no judge in the room, no defendant, and best of all, the jurors could question the witnesses. It was two days a week for a couple of months.

I'm way more excited by this than I should, but we've got ravens in the front yard's big maple! Not crows, ravens!
I don't think I had ever seen or heard a raven in the wild. Crows aplenty, yes, but not their bigger cousin. Heck, I saw vultures around the house before I saw a single raven!
It's not a melodious bird, though. The recordings I'd heard made it sound like a burly crow, but the ones nesting here sound like those screaming goats that were all the rage for five minutes a couple of years ago.

More encounters with wildlife...
I thought I had mice in my garage. Turns out that I have roof rats. Better than Norway rats, but still - rats. Eww.

Oh, yeah: the beaver's pesky cousin. Those buggers were pretty common in the part of Oregon I grew up in. Although I think I prefer them to rats - they don't move into people's homes or barns (at least, I've never heard of that happening).
