I wanted to create a place where we can all discuss the creativity, flair and unique and iconic design elements found in comic books and movies and television. There are so many spectacular and intriguing design choices from costumes, to vehicles, to equipment and so forth from the days of black and white into today and the changes each decade brings to existing styles and new. This can be a place where you can post your own pictures of what designs caught your fancy and explain they why's and what for's of how they are special to you. I don't want everyone to begin throwing random designs out there, instead i hope to suggest a new design that we can all address and talk about together and when that particular discussion has seemed to play out then every few days or so i will suggest a new one for us to delve into keeping the creative discussion ongoing. To start things off let the First design topic be: Batman's equipment which he uses to help him in his fight against crime. The Batarang, The Bat-mobile, The Bat-plane, the Bat-Boat, the Bat Cave and so forth. To (mis)quote Nicholson's Joker: Where does he get all those wonderful toys? The looks of most of these items are all iconic to say the least and classic in many ways. There are always updated look and style to all of these but they remain constant parts of the world of Batman from comics to television to movies. You can almost always tell what decade of Batman by the style of the Bat-mobile he drives. Classic smooth 40's with a bat head grill, stylized 1960's television show Bat-mobile, the movie Burton movie torpedo looking jet engine Bat-mobile versus the Nolan military tumbler. Astounding and spectacular looking vehicle. How all the vehicles evoke the "bat-ness" of the character in their look and styling all saying this is Batman's and nobody elses. The Batarang looking more like a boomerang of the 40's/50's then into the more stylized bat shaped 60's/70's and then the razor Batarangs of the 80's/90's/2000's and the movie Batarang/hook fired from pistol. Uniquely designed in every incarnation with twists and turns in their evolving look. Only the very coolest in costume accessorizing for the Dark Knight Detective allowed. How inspired is it that his secret headquarter should be a cave, the essential bat home being housed under his mansion? IS there any cooler looking place than the 66' television Bat Cave and it's own atomic generator and rotating Bat-mobile parking? Who else can claim to having a giant dinosaur and giant penny in their living quarter's? Who else would think to have a computer in their man cave before having a computer or a man cave was a thing? Hefner could only copy Bruce Wayne and create his Playboy mansion but dare he dream of his own bunny cave?!? There is just so much that is cool about the Batman tools of the trade and while as a character he can function just fine without them i think all of them combine to give him a special uniqueness that many of the other super hero's can only envy and even emulate at times. Yes, i am looking at you Green Arrow

Next Design of the times: the Starship Enterprise. Pick whichever version you like, whether it be original round tube warp drive pylon's or the upscale Movie version or the NuTrek not quite right looking Enterprise (to me) but they all carry the original Matt Jeffries design inspiration and styling that is something special. No matter where you may be when you see the shadow you instantly know what you are seeing the Enterprise. In a time when every space ship drawn or visualized for television or movies was either a flying saucer or a rocket with fins and points the Enterprise began a new tradition of depicting starships in larger and less aerodynamic designs. Ships of monstrous size and capabilities housing hundreds or more crewman and eventually families.
In the 1st Star Trek movie the love and grandeur of Enterprise is captured perfectly with Scotty giving Kirk his initial viewing of the refurbished ship. You can see and feel the admiration and love these two have for their lady of the spaceways. Once i first saw Star Trek on television i was drawing Enterprises all of the time. Designing my own federation star cruisers and other galactic spanning ships to help my mind traverse space and the universe. There has never been a grander lady of the stars than Enterprise!

It may be heresy; but, i always liked the Klingon ships better.

No heresy to me as I think all 3 of the basic ship designs in Star Trek were pretty well designed. The Klingon ship just says POWER in it's design to me, especially if you consider that it is NOT a ship you want showing up in your orbit. The Romulan design while rather simple bespoke to the more regal/roman roots of them. It was usually hidden, appearing suddenly and striking quickly only to disappear. A very sleek ship design i see as the type being used for stealth and atmospheric fighting, unlike the Klingon's and Federation ships which have to remain in orbit.

Today's Design of the Times just in time for Helloween is that leather clad fiery tempered spirit of retribution who is so hot headed it bursts into flames: The Ghost Rider! Either Johnny Blaze or Danny Ketch will do, not so much the more current incarnations which seem to drift (pun intended) further away from the original concept.
A daredevil stunt biker selling his soul and dealing with the repercussions of said bad choice. Who in their right mind would make a deal with the devil and NOT expect it going sour? But dumb ol' Mr. Blaze makes the best of his hellish wish fulfillment and begins learning moral lessons along the highway of life he now travels as a blazing, flame fueled demon (or angel, depending on current changes?) of retribution trying to utilize his skeletal form in the causes of rightousness. Burning souls both bad and good in his travels.
The original design: leather clad Evil Knievel wannabe in black leather with skull abaze riding the nights on his motorcycle is pure stunning visual excellence. Then add the creation of said bike from hellfire where it now defies the laws of physics, travelling faster than normal, burning up the ashpalt, or walls or ceilings as it burns hotly in pursuit of justice. An awesomely inspired story and visual that helped carry the demon rider across many years before cancellation did what Satan couldn't and claimed Johnny Blaze.
Then comes the new kid on the block with updated biker paraphenalia going into even deeper black leather and chains motif. Comes along a penance stare and Hell forged chains that can damn near do anything you can think of. Danny Ketch became an instant star reforging the Ghost Rider concepts an expanding upon it as well as returning Johnny Blaze.
Both Hellriders having their own fans and respecting both concepts and providing many more years of spectacular fiery stunts and bravery wrapped within a horrific setting. Eventually inspiring 2 movies which while not the best still carried exciting visuals and concepts from both Demon Riders.
No matter which you like and enjoy the Ghost Rider blazed new frontiers in his comic book adventures and his glory shall burn on ever brightly (if only from his skull BWAHAHAHA) through the nights to come fighting the eternal battle of good versus evil. Salvation versus damnation. The biker rides on...

When, I think of Daredevil ... the only person in mind in mine is ... Evel KnievelI saw him once when he jumps over 14 buses in Kings Island near Cincinnati Ohio and I was on vacation with my family visiting cousins for a week. It was October 25th, 1975 when he did this stunt.

I grew up watching any Knievel i could find on television. He was pure fun in the day and a true stunt cyclist performer. What you might call a true suicide jockey as nearly any televised spectacle jump he attempted would usually in end in a mass of wrecked cycle and bones. His jumps were super over the top attempts that he could/would pull off most of the time but his landings seemed to always be crash and burn. I think that is why the Super Dave Osborn comedy is spot on, because without Knievel there would be no Super Dave. Weekends were made for Knievel! Even had his toy rev up zip cord stunt cycle

He was very friendly with fans and very likable guy too.

All of this Knievel talk makes me wish for a flashback 70's Evel Knievel comic book. We need this. Some really cool visual stunts of the crazy man himself. Marvel needs to make this happen. The Collector will snatch Knievel away in the middle of a death defying jump to add into his collection. Because Knievel defies death all the time this causes a shift in the cosmo's and Knievel becomes immortal by Master Order to fight the forces of Chaos which has become stronger with Knievel's removal from the order of things. It takes Pip the Troll to break into the Collector's museum and freeing Knievel the 2 form a fast friendship as they begin to travel Earth correcting the cosmic imbalances in symbolic stunts and spectacles meeting and making new stunt daredevil's across the world. Psycho LSD adventures in print. Bring it on pleeeease
