Not really excited for either creative teams or line-ups. Still hoping that Gen X is going to be interesting. I did like the costume redesings for the young O5 done by Jamie McKelvie, though, especially as drawn by Art Adams in one of the cover previews. McKelvie designs... executed by Art Adams... I haven't read X-Men in a while (I sampled the All New by Bendis a while back but didn't stick with it) so have no idea what's going on or much interest in finding out, but I do like the look. -M

I like the costumes as well (especially Angel and Iceman). Cyclops is fine (but very similar to basically all his costumes). Jean and Beast: I'm not a fan of the big bulky jackets, but the designs themselves are good. I'm just not interested in the teenage O5 compared to their adult counterparts.

At the moment, I'm actually more interested in the teenage versions. Pretty much all the older ones, particularly Warren, have been basically ruined from my POV.

Generation X will be by Christina Strain (writer/artist of webcomic Sister Fox) and Amilcar Pinna (artist on the recent Ultimates series)
Cast will include Jubilee, Quentin Quire, Benjamin Deeds (from Bendis X-Men), Bling (from Milligan's X-Men), Eyeboy (Aaron's), Nature Girl (don't know her) and Hindsight (new character). Dani Moonstar, Magik and Chamber will appear but are not part of the main cast.
So far the one X-Men comic I'm interested in, cast has not been done to death by now and fresh talent on it.

Creative teams and character rosters were announced today for Blue and Gold. Marc Guggenheim and Adrian Syaf on Gold featuring Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Rachel Grey, Old Man Logan, and Kitty Pryde. Cullen Bunn and Jorge Molina on Blue featuring the teen O5 and Magneto. Pretty safe choices all around. It looks like Marvel is focusing more on winning back lapsed fans than finding new ones. I'll check it out. So the teen o5 is not only sticking around, but Magneto is in charge of them? That seems... odd. Did something happen in the books to make Kitty not like them anymore?

I would have preferred a couple of the Five Lights and/or Hope, but that's not a bad cast. I'l probably give it a shot.

She got Bendis'd into Guardians of the Galaxy for awhile.

Yeah, I saw that, I thought she came back, though? Guess being Starlord for a bit made her forget about being Prof. K.

So Weapon X will be Greg Pak and Greg Land and features Old Man Logan, Domino, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike and James Proudstar.
Jean Grey will be by Dennis Hopeless and Ibanez (not the Ibanez I know, though I'd love to see a Marvel comic in the style of Mortadelo and Filemón)

The scourge of Land continues. I like Victor Ibanez a lot. I wish he was drawing Gold.

I'm a little sad, as I was once a huge X-Men fan and now I couldn't care less about picking up any of these books. None of these announced teams, either of characters or creators, excites me in the least.

From time to time over the years I've been an avid X-Men collector and fan. I bought a lot of random issue in the 1980's from the local 7-11 and the 1990's cartoon was a huge deciding factor in my transition from baseball card collector to full-time comic book collector. That being said, evey time we've had one of these recent relaunches, I've given it a go, but it just doesn't seem to stick for me. I think I might just sit this one out.

I think there is a certain paradox when it comes to the X-Men.
The core of the appeal of the X-Men has been their outsider nature and when they surged to the peak of their popularity, the fanbase was mostly disaffected and disconnected youth-the outsiders on the fringes of culture and counter-culture, those who felt unaccepted and identified with the core concept. They were anti-establishment, somewhat counter-culture. Those who felt marginalized felt the appeal of the X-Men-geeky kids who loved comics and sci-fi, the queer culture of the late 70s and 80s that was not out and accepted as much as it is now, those who were drawn tot he appeal of punk culture, etc.
For many, those who feel that in youth outgrow parts of it and move more towards the accepted, more towards the establishment, become more settled and less disaffected, or their outlier nature becomes more mainstreamed within the society so they are less on the fringes. The appel of the X-Men to these is now more of the nostalgia bent, remember when we were young and disaffected and the X-Men embody the fond memories of youth-but what made the youth of their day is not what made the youth of the current time disaffected so if the X-Men are to maintain the core demographic of their appeal, i.e. the disaffected, they have to change to reflect the youth culture-but comics today is a nostalgia business in many ways and this impacts the X-Men moreso than almost any other franchise because of the nature of what the X-Men traditionally appealed to.
If the X-Men hew to close to what they were and the nostalgia of what made disaffected youth at the peak of the X-Men's popularity they are no longer an outlier but part of the now current establishment and lose what the central appeal of the concept was. There are your father's X-Men so to speak. But if they go all out for the core of their appeal and glom onto what makes disaffected youth today to appeal to that central conceit, they alienate the nostalgia audience which is the core customer base of comics these days.
They cannot be what they were and gain a new core audience without reinventing themselves but they cannot survive in the market today if they do reinvent themselves.
The X-Men in some ways were lightning in a bottle occurring in the right place at the right time to create that surge in popularity that made them "The X-Men" but this is a different time and a different place and I don't think there is a way to catch that lightning in a bottle a second time without a new surge of customers to fill in the hole in the market that a the loss of a nostalgia market creates, and that next generation of customers/fans isn't there because comics as a whole didn't cultivate that ground letting it lay fallow from the late 80s until just a few years ago when they were getting fat selling to the nostalgia market not worried about what happens after...
I think what we are seeing now with what Marvel keeps trying to do with the X-Men is find a way to please both sides and they are pleasing neither, so the luster has fallen off the franchise.
