I hope we don't have a thread like this yet... I thought it might be fun if we try to stump each other with riddles, puzzles and questions we either make up ourselves or found somewhere.
I'd like to start things off with a musical riddle.
Question: What did Whitney's mom do there?

I didn't even know Whitneys mom was a singer... Member of the legenday backing vocalists "the Sweet Inspiration" who also released some albums before Cissy started her solo career. They sang with everybody from Elvis to Aretha Franklin. When you hear Aretha's "Natural Woman" and the backing girls go "a-hoo!", that's them. Cissy also sang on pretty much every Luther Vandross album ever recorded. Hint: Both songs I posted are cover versions.

Great versions of two great songs, but I'm stumped. Houston covers Bacharach and Spector? Burt and Phil? Can't find a likely answer, so far. Very curious to find out what it is!

Wait - she covered her tracks - is that it?

Wait - she covered her tracks - is that it? You are very close. It's indeed about this being a Bacharach song (originally recorded by Cissy's niece, Dionne Warwick - a very musical family) and a Spector song. But there is a little nudge-nudge, wink-wink about how she chose to cover those two songs that were included on the same album. Music connoisseurs may have given a good chuckle hearing the songs back to back.

no idea, but I enjoyed listening to the songs. Same lol I've listened to them a bunch, but I can't figure out what I'm missing here. Like, I thought I was on to something but that went out the window. Like every other thought I had and followed. All dead ends.

Don't Know What To Do has a Spector-style production, and was written by Bacharach.
Be My Baby has a Bacharach-style backing production, and was originally produced and co-written by Spector.

I didn't know that. That's really neat actually. are they connected in any other way? I was stuck on Spector and Sceptor this morning before going to bed. That's why I shouldn't think of riddles half asleep lol

You got it! I thought that was so clever when I listened to the album. She basically switched around the musical styles of the original versions.

I didn't even know Whitneys mom was a singer... So was her aunt! Correction here, though. Thelma is not related to the Houston clan. You may have thought of Whitney's older cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Warwick, though, both successful recording artists.
