Okay, I've never read any Thanos stuff prior to his resurrection in the pages of Silver Surfer and, from what I understand, I'm missing out big time.
Problem is, those back issues are crazy expensive, and there doesn't seem to be a trade paperback collecting it all.
So any suggestions on the best way to obtain and read this series? Are there masterworks collections containing these stories?

Are there masterworks collections containing these stories? The Captain Marvel Essential vol. 2 and the Warlock Essential contain everything you want... but in B&W. A big trade announced for December is supposed to reprint all of Starlin's Captain Marvel stuff, and for the Warlock part you could go for this book. The Warlock part was also reprinted sometimes in the early '90s... those issues might not be too expensive. Your assessment is right : the original Thanos saga is where it's at. As far as I'm concerned, nothing that came after his resurrection really warranted his coming back from the dead in the first place. |

Thanos' Quest has been reprinted. I use to own it, but those two issues are together in one. Can't imagine that would be expensive. Starlin's Warlock was reprinted in Baxter issues, both as just Warlock and Warlock Special Edition, both with include Strange Tales #178-181. After that, I don't know what all has been reprinted. There really aren't a lot of essential Silver Surfer Vol 2 issues needed, but at least SS #34-38 which goes right into Infinity Gauntlet, if you want to read further.
As for the older stuff, before Thanos Quest, it seems RR's got all the answers, since I own all the individual issues I don't know the collections well.

The closest to all in one already out there isone that collects more of the early material- The Avengers vs. Thanos trade which has Iron Man 55, Captain Marvel 25-33, Marvel Feature 12, Daredevil 105-107, Avengers 125, Warlock 9-11, and 15, Avengers Annual 7, Marvel Two in One Annual 2 and the back up from Logan's Run 6. It gets a lot of flack because it skips Warlock 10-14, but those weren't Avengers vs. Thanos type issues-the theme of the book. If you want floppies on the cheap there is The Warlock Special Edition and the Life of Captain Marvel Baxter reprint series from the 80s. Marvel also did reprint collections in floppies in 2012/2013 of The Final Threat (collecting the 2 1977 Annuals-Avenergs and 2-in-1) and the Thanos Quest. There is also an inexpensive trade collecting Surfer 34-50 I believe, which is where you said you came into the story. -M PS I am still waiting for the Spidey Super Stories appearance to be in one of these collection  |

I've got to agree with Kurt. I read it incidentally because pieces of it kept popping up in a number of titles I enjoyed. Starlin's art is solid throughout, naturally, but I found the story itself overwrought and unrewarding. The fact that it was shoe-horned in to various disparate books like an unwanted guest gave me the impression that the only person who demanded the story be told was Starlin, as opposed to the sweeping, epic saga I'm sure he intended.
And, of course he's been ostensibly telling the story again and again for forty years. But yeah, the art was really nice.

I'm a fan, but there is a LOT of telling not showing. Like, entire issues of it.
I've got the Masterworks (I have a 72.7% complete collection of Marvel Masterworks) but they're out of print and fairly pricey now - often in the 100 dollar range. Blah.
If you don't want to wait The Thanos/Avengers and Starlin Warlock collections cover most of the must read material, but you definitely need The Death of Captain Marvel. It's available in "The Life and Death of Captain Marvel" trade (Out of Print, but going for 26 bucks on Amazon), or the original graphic novel - which was reprinted a gazillion times and should be available cheap.
I'll also stick up for the pre-Starlin Captain Marvel stuff - with Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, Gil Kane, Arnold Drake, and Don Heck's best superhero work ever! - as definitely worth reading.

I'm actually coming at this from the absolute backwards approach. Probably ten years ago I stumbled upon the early Captain Marvel of the Kree issues, picked them up out of mild curiosity, and really enjoyed them. I got the first ten appearances and always meant to go back for more but, being a child of the 1980s, I had absolutely no grasp of the significance the character's later iteration holds in comic book history today. Here I'd thought I'd stumbled upon some long forgotten character. |

Obviously I do not agree with the naysayers. I reread through the entire thing just last year and at its best, it's just awesome. Easily among my half dozen favorite comic series. And Avengers annual 7 remains one of the best single issues I have ever read.
