The first episode of True Detective is one of my favorite episodes of any series. It never got to the point where I didn't want to see the next episode, but I have no desire to ever watch it again (excepting the first episode). I may give the second season a shot, but I have really low expectations.

I didn't include True Detective because it was, what, 6 episodes long, which strikes me as a miniseries rather than a series per se. Quite good, in any event, though I found the denouement a bit underwhelming in comparison to what had gone before.

I am in queue to get True Detective form the library, so looking forward to checking it out after hearing so many good things about it.

These are the series I remember looking forward to new episodes of the most:
Twin Peaks (was this 1990?) Seinfeld The X-Files (especially the first 5 seasons or so) Buffy the Vampire Slayer Da Vinci's Inquest (Canadian show) Intelligence (another series from the creator of DVI) This is Wonderland (another Canadian show) Battlestar Galactica (especially the first 3 years or so)
after that you get into the current "HBO era", where you're mostly watching on your own time, and I find it hard to compare these shows to those that followed the old weekly format. These are probably too recent to judge, but I've enjoyed:
Dexter (edit: first 4 seasons only - haven't seen beyond that, and probably won't, going by what I've heard) Archer "Spiral" (aka Engrenages, French cop show you can watch with English subtitles from a UK broadcast) Rome Spartacus (first season only - after the lead actor died it was never the same) Mad Men
Most recently I've been watching Breaking Bad - just finished the last episode a couple nights ago. It was a bit slow at first, but the last two seasons were riveting.

I completely forgot about MST3K, but they definitely belong on my list. My wife and I used to watch the Sci-Fi episodes on Saturday mornings while we were eating breakfast, and they have a ton of them (both the old and new) on Amazon Prime that I watch when I'm traveling for work.

These are the series I remember looking forward to new episodes of the most: Twin Peaks (was this 1990?) Yes it was. It went into 1991 though. I should give it another shot. The whole dancing dream sequence at the end of the one episode kind of creeped me out so I gave up on the show. Kyle Maclachlan is brilliant in it though.

Baywatch Nights Series 2 including such classic episodes as The Mobius: Mitch, Ryan, and an old friend of Ryan's are transported to a possible future world. Zargtha: A dangerous wolf like creature flees from Yugoslavia and begins hunting and killing teenagers. The Eighth Seal: After saving a young girl from killing herself, Mitch soon learns there's more to her story than meets the eye....and becomes involved with the plans of a sea demon. Mind...cannot...process mine couldnt too - i had enough trouble processing bigfoot and the hendersons so Baywatch Nights Series 2 was like nothing i'd ever seen and will ever see again.

One show I could have included but didn't is Prime Suspect, which I hadn't seen until a couple years ago. Certainly one of the best shows of the 90s, but since I didn't watch it at the time, I don't associate it with Seinfeld or the X-Files or whatever I was watching back then.

Quite good, in any event, though I found the denouement a bit underwhelming in comparison to what had gone before. I think it started as a miniseries, but is now an anthology. I think the resolution is probably my favorite part outside of the first episode and kinda elevates the last seven episodes. But like I said, I wouldn't want to watch anything after the first episode again.

True Detective had the best first season I've ever seen in television. I will be shocked if they keep that level of quality up throughout the second season, but I'm excited to find out.
