For a man that made the best Aliens franchise movie; Alien, Ridley is single handedly destroying the cinematic Aliens universe. I think that he would have more success with his new ideas if he didn’t stick to the “alien film” formula (the slow buildup, the stressful chase and the final face-off).

The absence of an origin of the Alien is precisely why I enjoy the Aliens movie previous to Prometheus. That said I think the novels and comics exploring the Aliens origins are far more entertaining. They reveal things about them as a species but still leave a lot in the dark. Ridley’s obsession that this is “his” franchise seems to bear out why his movies suck so bad.

I don’t want the aliens to have an origin. They work better, as far as I am concerned, as simply an example of the mysterious, scary and unfathomable things that wait for us out there!

Youngest son and I went to see John Wick 3 on Saturday. I liked the first two films quite a bit for what they were, over-the-top violent action films with just a bit of heart. I didn't dislike this one. It didn't deviate significantly from the form. Where it fell down for me is that it really lacked any heart. And while none of them are long on plot, this one was shorter than most. I'm not unhappy I saw it. I'm just glad I paid matinee prices.

And maybe origins wasn't exactly the right word to describe the comics and novels. More like exploration. Taking the franchise beyond Ripley. Which is something the movies can't seem to do. Taking them from different worlds, exploring some of their entomology in different facets. But never really explaining anything more of the origin than the space jockey from Alien. The best thing, of all the comics and novels I've read, it the Aliens are the stars. And we humans (and other species) are the supporting characters. Instead of Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Resurrection perpetually making Ripley the star over and over. Which as much as I like Sigourney Weaver, I think really stunted the potential of better Aliens movies. And not having to resort to franchise crossovers like AvP.

I thought the first Alien miniseries would have been a very good sequel, had it been filmed; it depicted the inevitable arrival of the aliens on Earth, and of course they were the victors. The story starred Newt and Hicks, from Aliens, but not Ripley. I think it was retconned and modified later on to accomodate Alien 3 and other instalments in the franchise. More's the pity, as it was quite a logical continuation of what we had seen before, and did not follow the same dramatic framework. It was also very spooky to see how we were quickly losing our planet!

Yes, at first Aliens (Vol. 1) was about Newt and Hicks pretty far into the future (from the movie Aliens) as she was a young adult. When Alien 3 came out DH released a TPB edition of the series where it was mostly just name changes and that it wasn't Hicks and Newt just two new characters. If I remember correctly.

Precisely why I hope Scott never revisits Legend and tries to turn the fairies, goblins, etc. into extraterrestrials or some such demystifying crap.

Bryan Singer has been removed from the in development Red Sonja film (thank god) and replaced by Jill Soloway (of Transparent fame). Singer's name and rep are toxic and almost killed this project when it was announced he was attached as director, so I am glad he is off the project. I also haven't liked anything hehas done since the first 2 X-Men films a decade and a half ago, so even if his name wasn't toxic, I think replacing him would have been good news. -M

Have they cast the lead yet for it? I didn't even know this was still in the works.

I don't believe it's gotten to casting yet, at least not that I have heard of anyways. -M

The Mouse is wasting no time putting some of the Fox properties into production. With the deal they acquired the rights to Flash Gordon and have hired Takia Waititi for a new Flash Gordon animated movie. Rumors are he will write and direct the feature, but his exact role has not been announced, only that he has been hired for the project. -M

Finally got around to watching Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse this evening. What a fun, different kind of superhero movie. Really enjoyed it, as did my wife and older daughter (the younger one got dropped off at summer camp this afternoon, so I'll have to watch it again with her when she gets back).
